DCL Expands UAE Footprint After AI-Powered Championship Success
DCL will launch a free-to-play simulator, pilot certification programmes and STEM-focused media collaborations.
May 01, 2025
The Drone Champions League (DCL) - a global leader in competitive drone racing - is expanding its operations in the UAE following a landmark weekend at the A2RL x DCL Autonomous Drone Championship in Abu Dhabi.
The April 2025 event, co-organised with the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), saw 14 international teams compete for a USD 1 million prize pool. In a historic moment, an AI-powered drone developed by the Dutch university team MavLab (TU Delft) outperformed a world-class human pilot in a live challenge.
As part of a new five-year roadmap for DCL's growth in the UAE, the league will launch DCL: The Game, a free-to-play simulator designed to make drone racing accessible to a global audience. Additional initiatives include pilot certification programmes, STEM-driven media collaborations with extreme sports creators, and the development of interactive learning hubs.
'The UAE is the ideal launchpad for what comes next,' said Drone Champions League Executive Chair Markus Stampfer. 'The vision is not just to push boundaries in speed and performance, but to inspire a generation, build careers, and unlock the full potential of autonomous systems in everyday life.'
Plans include flight arenas, virtual tracks modelled on global landmarks, and initiatives merging esports, streetwear, and education to engage Gen Z and Alpha.

Leverkusen sign Dutch goalkeeper Flekken from Brentford
June 3 (Reuters) - Bayer Leverkusen have signed Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Premier League Brentford on a three-year contract, the Bundesliga club said on Tuesday. The 31-year-old will return to Germany after two seasons at Brentford, where he made 74 appearances in the Premier League. "Mark Flekken possesses a wide range of skills that a goalkeeper in modern top-flight football must possess," Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes said. "Mark exudes an impressive physical presence; from a footballing perspective, he has certainly been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League over the past two years." Flekken, who has played eight times for the Netherlands, has spent the majority of his career in Germany with clubs including Freiburg and Duisburg. Leverkusen appointed former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as their head coach in May, replacing Xabi Alonso who left to join Real Madrid.

Egypt to Launch 5G Services Nationwide on June 4th
The NTRA confirms that 5G services will begin rolling out in Egypt from Wednesday June 4th, starting with major cities. Jun 03, 2025 Egypt will officially roll out 5G services across the country starting Wednesday, June 4th. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) will hold an event to celebrate the launch at the Giza Pyramids on the same day. The launch follows significant investments by Egypt's four telecom operators—Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and Telecom Egypt—who have collectively spent around USD 2.7 billion on 5G spectrum licenses and infrastructure since 2019. The new generation of connectivity is expected to deliver faster internet speeds, lower latency, and improved capacity for high-demand services. The NTRA stated that the 5G launch aligns with national efforts to support digital transformation, smart cities, and future-ready industries. Initial coverage will prioritise key economic and administrative zones, with a phased expansion to other regions expected later this year.
