Indies coach Daren Sammy called for justice and fairness ahead of the second Test against Australia, addressing controversial umpiring decisions and sexual assault allegations.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has called for justice and fairness both on and off the field as he addressed two sensitive issues ahead of the second Test against Australia in Grenada: controversial umpiring decisions in Barbados and sexual assault allegations involving a West Indies player.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the first Test, Sammy disclosed that match officials acknowledged errors made during the game at Kensington Oval, particularly decisions that affected the West Indies at crucial moments.
Sammy, who was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and received a demerit point for his post-match comments on umpiring, expressed that he had no regrets about his statements.
'I strongly believed in what I said. We've had further chats (with the officials). They've clarified some stuff. There has been some admission of error as well. This was Barbados, and we're now in Grenada, so we've left that behind. I don't hold grudges. I said what I said, based on what I saw. I've been punished for it. I wish Adrian (Holdstock) all the best, to be honest. I mean, we're all human. I have nothing against the umpires. I wish he has an awesome game," Sammy was quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
What was said on sexual assault allegations?
Sammy also addressed the ongoing sexual assault allegations against a West Indies player, noting that women have reportedly come forward with claims dating back to 2023, though no charges have been filed, according to Guyana-based Kaieteur News.
'We're all aware of what's been going on in the media. I'm very close to my players. I've had conversations with them, making sure their mental space is good. One thing I could say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served.
'But, as of now, it's all allegations. And we know the justice system. You've got to wait for things to process the right way," Sammy said.

HC seeks record of charges framed against Cong MLA Sanjay Awasthi

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh high court has directed advocate general Anup Rattan to place on record the photocopies of the relevant documents of the case in which the special judge Solan has framed charges against Congress MLA from Arki, Sanjay Awasthi, and cricketer Vikramjeet Malik . The directions came from the division bench comprising Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawali and Justice Ranjan Sharma during the resumed hearing of a suo moto case pertaining to the pending criminal cases against the MPs and MLAs in the state, on Tuesday. The advocate general informed the court that the special judge Solan had framed charges against Awasthi and Malik on April 21, 2022. MLA Awasthi is facing charges of wrongly authenticating the veracity of cricketer Malik's claim of being a resident of Solan to register himself with the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) and to play with the Himachal Ranji team. Awasthi, who is himself a cricketer, was then president of the Solan District Cricket Association and also served as a municipal councillor in Solan from 2000 to 2005. Malik, born in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, played in the Himachal Ranji team as a bowler and was later part of the Kings XI Punjab IPL team from 2009 to 2011. He then shifted to Rajasthan Royals in 2013, and later Royal Challengers Bangalore picked him in the 2016 auction. The state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau had registered a case of cheating, forgery, and false documentation against various cricketers from other states for obtaining Himachal domicile certificates on false documents. The vigilance had filed the first chargesheet in the court in June 2013 against cricketer Kuldeep Diwan, who claimed to be a resident of Kullu. Malik and another Delhi-based cricketer, Sobers Joban, are co-accused in the case. The high court has posted the matter for the next hearing on Sept 8. France Probes Death Of Man On Live Video Stream After Violence And Humiliations

Paris: French authorities are investigating the death of a man during a live video stream on the Kick live streaming platform, where he had regularly been shown enduring violence and humiliations. Prosecutors ordered an autopsy and opened an investigation into the death of the 46-year-old man in the village of Contes, north of Nice, on Monday. Clara Chappaz, junior minister for AI and digital technology, said Raphael Graven, known online as Jean Pormanove, had regularly featured in videos on Kick, where he was physically assaulted or humiliated by co-streamers as viewers watched live. "The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he suffered are horrific," she said on X. Kick Francais said on X that it would cooperate with authorities and was undertaking a review of its French content. "Our priority is to protect creators and ensure a safer environment on Kick," it said, adding that "all co-streamers who participated in this live broadcast have been banned pending the ongoing investigation". Kick is an Australia-registered live streaming platform that shares revenue with its content creators. Chappaz said a judicial investigation is underway, that she had referred the matter to digital and audiovisual communication regulator Arcom and that she had filed a report to Pharos, France's internet portal for reporting illicit internet content. She said she asked Kick for explanations, adding: "The responsibility of online platforms for dissemination of illegal content is not optional: it is the law". Yassin Sadouni, a lawyer for one of two co-streamers seen abusing Pormanove, said on BFM television that Pormanove had cardiovascular problems and that the violence in the videos was not real but acted. "All those scenes are just staged, they follow a script," he said. French media have shown excerpts of hours-long videos during which Pormanove is seen suffering blows, insults, strangulation, dousing with paint and oil and being shot at with a paintball gun. It was not clear from the video excerpts if Pormanove voluntarily subjected himself to the violence or was forced to endure it, nor whether the action was real or staged.

Former employees arrested for stealing IT firm's data, causing loss

1 2 Pune: Three former employees of an IT company in Hinjewadi were arrested earlier this week on the charge of stealing the firm's confidential data and causing a loss of Rs82 crore to it. The fraud occurred between April 2024 and August this year. An officer of the company lodged a complaint with the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police last week. Police investigations revealed that these employees were in contact with the complainant's client — a company in the US. The trio, along with the US-based firm, were duping the complainant's company.
