A new coalition challenges Suriname's president after a close election

PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AP) — Suriname could soon have its first female president after a party led by a medical doctor formed a coalition aimed at ousting the South American country's current leader following a weekend election with no clear winner.
Dr. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, of the National Democratic Party, formed a coalition with five other parties late Tuesday as workers still tallied votes from Sunday's National Assembly election. The chamber chooses the president by a two-thirds vote.
The coalition was formed as the troubled country prepares for an influx of wealth following the discovery of major offshore oil deposits, with the first production expected by 2028.
The National Democratic Party has so far secured 18 seats in the 51-member National Assembly, while the Progressive Reform Party of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi clinched 17, losing three seats in the election.
However, votes at some polling stations were still being counted, and recounts in some places were already underway in the Dutch-speaking country of more than 646,000 people.
Once preliminary results are confirmed, the National Assembly would then meet to choose a president. The coalition headed by Geerlings-Simons so far appears to hold 34 seats, which would be just enough to muster a two-thirds majority.
Geerlings-Simons took leadership of the National Democratic Party from Desi Bouterse, a former dictator convicted of murder who left the country in financial ruin. He died last year.
Joining her to form a coalition was the Alternative 2020 party; the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics party; the General Liberation and Development Party founded by vice president and former rebel leader Ronnie Brunswijk; the National Party of Suriname; and the Pertjajah Luhur Party.
The last three parties used to back Suriname's president in a coalition but recently have dropped their support, accusing him of not involving them in policy creation.
Santokhi's five-year presidency also was riddled with corruption scandals, and he was forced to call on the International Monetary Fund to get Suriname's economy back on track.
As a result, the country's nearly $4 million public debt was largely restructured and government subsidies reduced. Macroeconomically, Santokhi achieved success, but people groaned under the austerity measures, which sparked violent protests.

Ancelotti And Brazil Can Confirm FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualification

Brazil's team coach Carlo Ancelotti looks on during a training at Joaquim Grava training center on ... More June 02, 2025 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Carlo Ancelotti begins his tenure as coach of Brazil on the way to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. New Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti can see his side confirm its spot at the FIFA 2026 World Cup this week. Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia can also confirm their places at the tournament if results go their way. Meanwhile Argentina has already booked its place. Colombia who currently sits in the sixth and final automatic qualifying spot in South America will likely need just three points from an available six to qualify this week. Whilst the other teams above them could easily qualify with just one or two points from the upcoming matches. Vinicius Junior of Brazil celebrates after scoring the team's first goal during the CONMEBOL Copa ... More America 2024 Group D match between Paraguay and Brazil at Allegiant Stadium on June 28, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Qualification is coming, but for Carlo Ancelotti and the Brazil squad this is the least of their worries. One year out from the big tournament, Brazil shouldn't even have to contemplate qualification. By the standards of this nation, they should be building a team that can win this tournament. With that in mind, Carlo Ancelotti better get moving. The new boss opens up with games against Ecuador and Paraguay, but his time on the training ground with the team will also be vital if he is to start coaching the team into his own style of play. This international window will be too soon to judge the new manager, but heavy expectations will be waiting around the corner for Ancelotti, and come the September and October internationals Brazil fans will expect big improvements for their side after a recent humbling by Argentina. Willian Pacho of Paris Saint Germain celebrates with the trophy after the UEFA Champions League ... More Final 2025 between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Internazionale Milano at Munich Football Arena on May 31, 2025 in Munich, Germany. Ecuador sits second in the table and are the only team in qualification to have lost as few as two games. At the Qatar 2022 World Cup the team was unlucky to face the Netherlands and an in-form Senegal in the group stages but this sterling young squad has grown since then and will be aiming for the knock-out rounds next summer. Days ago, PSG centre-back Willian Pacho became the first ever player from Ecuador to win the European Cup, and his international teammate Moisés Caicedo scored for Chelsea as he lifted the UEFA Conference League title. The future and the FIFA 2026 World Cup is looking bright for Ecuador who takes on Brazil and Peru in the next week. Uruguay's Argentine head coach Marcelo Bielsa gestures during the 2026 FIFA World Cup South American ... More qualifiers football match between Uruguay and Argentina at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, on March 21, 2025. Uruguay has been relatively quiet and inconsistent during this campaign. Marcelo Bielsa's men have won just five games from 14 but those included famous victories at home to Brazil and away to Argentina. Like any Bielsa or Uruguay side however they are a fiercely competitive group of players and very difficult to beat. Uruguay has a year to try and convince the country it can do something special at the World Cup, starting with games away to Paraguay and at home to Venezuela this week. Qualification now seems a formality but the team hasn't yet shown the conviction of a side that can compete for the biggest prize of all next summer. ASUNCION, PARAGUAY - NOVEMBER 14: Omar Alderete of Paraguay celebrates after scoring the team's ... More second goal during the South American FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier match between Paraguay and Argentina at Estadio Defensores del Chaco on November 14, 2024 in Asuncion, Paraguay. Paraguay has undoubtedly been the surprise package of this FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, and on an eight match unbeaten streak it is also the most in-form team on the continent. It is quite remarkable that Paraguay seems a near-qualifier with four games of the league still to be played; very few would have predicted such. This amazing campaign has been formed on few goals at either end. Paraguay has conceded nine and scored just 11 in 14 games, but that means seven clean sheets providing the base to go and get results from. Paraguay has only lost three matches. Paraguay are six points above Venezuela in the play-off position and faces Uruguay and Brazil in the next week. Luis Diaz of Colombia during the international friendly match between Spain and Colombia at London ... More Stadium on March 22, 2024 in London, England. Colombia currently occupies the final automatic qualifying spot for the FIFA 2026 World Cup in the South American league table. Luis Díaz and his teammates are five points ahead of Venezuela and will hope to extend that margin, or at least maintain it, by defeating Peru at home this week. A win against Peru would make Colombia very difficult for Venezuela to catch as they also have a home fixture to come against Bolivia in September. Six points from the remaining 12 will almost definitely be enough to qualify as Venezuela won't take maximum points. After the Peru game Colombia travels to Argentina for a rematch of the Copa America final; another fine test of their credentials ahead of the 2026 tournament.

Software suggests Rubin Observatory will discover millions of solar system objects in its first year

A new type of computer simulation predicts that the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile will discover 2.85 million previously undetected objects in the solar system in its first year of operation, with millions more to be spotted in the years that follow. The discovery campaign, which is due to begin in earnest later this year, should expand the known population of small bodies in the solar system by a factor of four to nine, said University of Washington astronomer Mario Juric, a member of the research team behind the open-source Sorcha simulation software. 'With this data, we'll be able to update the textbooks of solar system formation and vastly improve our ability to spot — and potentially deflect — the asteroids that could threaten Earth,' Juric said today in a news release. Several studies describing the software and the predictions have been accepted for publication by The Astronomical Journal. The project was led by researchers from Queen's University Belfast in collaboration with colleagues from UW, the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The software's name is derived from the Gaelic word for 'brightness.' Sorcha starts with the Rubin Observatory's planned observing schedule, factors in how the telescope makes its observations, and matches up those capabilities with the best model for the current state of the solar system and its reservoirs of small bodies such as asteroids. 'Accurate simulation software like Sorcha is critical,' said Queen's University astronomer Meg Schwamb, who led the research team. 'It tells us what Rubin will discover and lets us know how to interpret it. Our knowledge of what objects fill Earth's solar system is about to expand exponentially and rapidly.' The software suggests that, over the course of a 10-year campaign known as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, Rubin will map more than 5 million main-belt asteroids, 127,000 near-Earth objects, 109,000 Trojan asteroids that share Jupiter's orbit, 37,000 trans-Neptunian objects and about 2,000 orbit-crossing objects known as Centaurs. Jake Kurlander, a UW doctoral student who's the principal author of one of the studies, said Rubin's observations should double the number of known asteroids in the solar system in less than a year. 'Rubin's unparalleled combination of breadth and depth make it a uniquely effective discovery machine,' he said. The observatory's Simonyi Survey Telescope — which is named after the family of Seattle software pioneer Charles Simonyi — is designed to observe small bodies multiple times using different optical filters, revealing their surface colors. Past solar system surveys typically made observations using a single filter. 'With the LSST catalog of solar system objects, our work shows that it will be like going from black-and-white television to brilliant color,' said Joe Murtagh, a doctoral student at Queen's University. The Rubin Observatory team has already started making preliminary observations and will share some of those early images at a First Look event on June 23. Check out for more information about the Sorcha simulation software. The Rubin Observatory is funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, with additional support from other organizations and private contributors including Charles Simonyi and Bill Gates. The research papers relating to the Sorcha project include:
