Probe Agency ED Attaches Rs 127 Crore Worth Shares Against Ex-Trinamool MP's Son
The probe agency said the shares are linked to two immovable properties - Alchemist Hospital (40.94%) and Ojas Hospital (37.24%), located in Panchkula - under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. These shares are held by M/s Sorus Agritech Pvt. Ltd., a company beneficially owned by Karan Deep Singh, son of Kanwar Deep, the promoter of the Alchemist Group.
The investigation is being held on the basis of First Information Reports (FIRs) initially filed by the Kolkata Police and later by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Lucknow, under Indian Penal Code sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) against M/s Alchemist Township Pvt. Ltd., M/s Alchemist Infra Realty Pvt. Ltd., and their promoter/directors, including Kanwar Deep Singh.
According to ED, the case revolves around a massive criminal conspiracy involving the fraudulent collection of public money through illegal Collective Investment Schemes (CIS). The accused companies lured investors with false promises of high returns and allotment of residential units like plots, flats and villas.
Investigations revealed that ₹1,848 crore was illegally raised from the public and later misappropriated. The proceeds of this fraud were layered through complex transactions across multiple Alchemist Group entities, ultimately channelled into the construction and shareholding of the two hospitals, in an attempt to project the tainted funds as legitimate investments.
ED had arrested Kanwar Deep Singh on January 12, 2021, in connection with the case. A prosecution complaint was filed before the Special Court (PMLA) on March 2, 2021, followed by a supplementary complaint on July 19, 2024.
So far, ED has provisionally attached assets worth ₹238.42 crore across five separate orders related to the case. The agency said a probe is underway to trace additional assets and uncover the complete money trail involved in this alleged large-scale financial fraud.

Reforms in last 11 years led to transparent, sensitive, citizen-centric governance: PM Modi
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that sweeping reforms introduced by his government over the past 11 years have transformed India's governance model into one that is transparent, sensitive, and citizen-centric. Citing the success of the JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) trinity, Modi said that the initiative had plugged massive leakages in welfare schemes and prevented the theft of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore that was allegedly being siphoned off through 10 lakh fake beneficiaries under previous regimes. "Approximately 10 crore beneficiaries listed under various schemes such as the ration card, gas subsidy, and scholarships were found to be nonexistent. These individuals, who never actually existed, were being used by previous governments to funnel money to middlemen. However, these 10 crore fake names have now been removed from the list of beneficiaries by the incumbent government. According to an estimate, this cleanup has resulted in savings of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore, which would have otherwise gone into the wrong hands. Imagine theft of Rs 4.30 lakh crore. Now, this amount is being used for the development of this country," the prime minister said. PM Modi was speaking at an event at Kartavya Path after inaugurating Kartavya Bhavan (Common Central Secretariat Building) 3, the first of the 10 state-of-the-art Central government office complexes planned as part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan. These blocks will house offices of all ministries and associated departments, presently functioning from Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, North and South Blocks and other buildings located at different locations.

SC refuses to grant relief to IAS officer in graft case
Cuttack: The Supreme Court refused to grant relief to senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi in a corruption case, dismissing his plea challenging an order by Orissa high court that had denied him anticipatory bail. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih in its order on Aug 4 said it was 'not inclined to interfere' with the high court's July 28 ruling. However, the court allowed Sethi the liberty to surrender and apply for regular bail, saying it would be considered 'on its own merits'. The case stems from the arrest of a group general manager of a public sector unit on Dec 8, 2024, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a Bhubaneswar-based real estate firm. During interrogation of the manager, Sethi's name reportedly emerged, following which CBI raided the senior bureaucrat's residence on Feb 18 this year. Sethi had earlier approached the high court for anticipatory bail after his petition seeking to quash the CBI probe was dismissed on June 20. The high court termed his plea 'premature' as the investigation was still at an early stage.
