New Delhi: RSS affiliate Laghu Udyog Bharati (LUB), which supports the small-scale industry, has urged the government to drop the requirement of compulsory testing of cough syrups at a government-approved laboratory before exports, stating that it leads to delays and increased cost.India made the testing compulsory following reports that linked the death of several children in Gambia to "made in India" cough syrups."For the manufacturers and exporters, these are areas of concern as it results in potential delays and increased costs, particularly for export shipments," LUB all India general secretary Om Prakash Gupta wrote in a letter dated May 10 to union health minister JP Nadda He requested the minister to "provide a viable solution" addressing the concerns of the pharma industry.According to the LUB, the testing procedure often takes 45 days and the testing fee of '25,000 per batch is "quite hefty".It also sought exemption from testing for exporters of other syrups, suspensions, dry syrups, tablets, injections and infusions as there had been no critical complaints in the past two years. In May 2023, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade notified that for exports, cough syrup manufacturers must produce a certificate of analysis from a government-approved laboratory. This followed incidents where India-made cough syrups imported into Gambia were allegedly found to be contaminated with diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, resulting in an acute kidney injury cluster among children.

TN seeks retention of in-service quota for super-specialty in Round 2

Chennai: Health Minister Ma Subramanian sought the intervention of Union health minister J P Nadda to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of state-level NEET super-specialty counselling. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The first round of counselling for admission to super-specialty courses such as cardiology, nephrology, neurology, urology, cardiac, and vascular surgery, conducted by the medical counselling committee under the directorate general of health services (DGHS), ended on May 27. As per the Supreme Court order, Tamil Nadu reserved 50% of seats in these courses in govt medical colleges of the state exclusively for govt doctors (in-service candidates). While only 30% of candidates took the seats allotted to them, more than 70% of the 215 seats were vacant, officials said. While the state does not have adequate candiates qualified to join the course, officials said the Centre must consider in-service candidates if and when they reduce percentile scores in the subsequent rounds. On May 29, the state selection committee formally requested DGHS to indicate the dates for the second round of counselling to allow the upgradation of seats for in-service candidates. "However, it has come to our notice that the process of surrendering the unfilled in-service seats to the All-India Quota is being considered, without conducting the mandatory second round of counselling at the state level. Such a move would effectively deprive our in-service candidates of their rightful opportunity to upgrade or participate in further counselling and would be contrary to the spirit and intent of the Supreme Court's order," Subramanian wrote. He urged Nadda's intervention to ensure that all 50% of seats earmarked for in-service candidates under the state quota are retained and made available in Round 2 of counselling.

1st govt proton therapy unit proposed at cancer instt

Bengaluru: The department of medical education in Karnataka on Monday announced its plan to establish the country's first govt-run proton therapy facility for cancer treatment at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO). The move came after Karnataka minister for medical education and skill development Sharan Prakash Patil, during a recent meeting with Union health minister J P Nadda in Bengaluru, submitted a proposal seeking a Rs 500 crore grant from the Centre to set up this advanced treatment facility. A premier cancer hospital of India, KMIO in Bengaluru registers 21,000 new cancer cases annually. Proton therapy-an advanced form of radiation treatment-offers superior tumour control while safeguarding critical organs near the tumour, thus reducing long-term side effects, especially in sensitive areas. "Unlike conventional radio therapy that uses high-energy gamma rays or X-rays-which can impact healthy tissues beyond the tumour-proton therapy delivers precise, targeted doses with significantly reduced collateral damage," Patil stated in his proposal.
