Tiernan Lynch at loss to explain flat Derry City display in defeat to Sligo Rovers: ‘Why? I don't have the answer to that'
It was a difficult weekend for Lynch, who watched his players fail to perform as they fell to a first defeat in six League games.
First-half goals from Patrick McClean and Wilson Waweru condemned City to a 2-0 defeat, with both goals coming from poor Derry defending.
'We probably lost the game in the first-half with the goals that we conceded, which has been very unlike us of late,' Lynch reflected afterwards.
'We were very disappointed because we gave ourselves a mountain to climb in the second-half.
'I felt we huffed and puffed a bit more in the second-half, but we didn't work their goalkeeper enough, we didn't work their back-four enough and, ultimately, we got nothing from the game.'
Lynch was unable to put his finger on how his team went from scoring seven goals against Waterford to failing to provide much threat at all against Sligo.
'It's extremely disappointing,' he acknowledged. 'I had been praising the players all week because they were superb in training.
'They worked so hard and there was a real buzz around the place, but we just never got going, and I think the two goals that we conceded were proper sucker punches.
'Why? I don't have the answer to that. We've got to go away and look at this game back, and we have got to look at the areas where we fell short and we have got to look at the areas where we have been doing well and work out why we didn't do them well here.
'Everything we do will always be internal. It's hard to knock the boys and, albeit we're hugely disappointed right now, the last four or five weeks, they have been outstanding and I can't ask for any more of them in terms of their work-rate. But this wasn't good enough from us.
'They know that more than anybody, and there's no one more disappointed than them, so it's important that we dust ourselves off and we go again.'
City are next in action in the FAI Cup as they head to First Division Treaty United on Friday night, the first step on what they hope will end with a third FAI Cup Final appearance in four years.

Derry City's title hopes dealt another major blow with defeat at leaders Shamrock Rovers
A win for City at Tallaght would have taken them to within five points of the League leaders with 10 games remaining, but even that incentive was not enough on another night of disappointment against the Hoops. It is a familiar feeling for Derry fans, who have seen their team held at arm's length by Rovers year in and year out, with their record at Tallaght in recent years easily their worst of all destinations in the Premier Division, just one win in their last 15 visits. In fact, the Candystripes have managed just seven points out of a possible 45 at Tallaght and, not for the first time in recent years, their title hopes all but ended in front of delighted Rovers supporters. City manager Tiernan Lynch will be especially disappointed with this result, particularly after a very solid first half from his team, and there is little doubt that the visitors should have gone into the half-time break at least one goal ahead. Lynch gave a debut to new signing Jamie Stott, while Adam O'Reilly also came into the starting line-up as Sam Todd and Ronan Boyce both dropped to the bench. It was the home side who started the brighter with both Aaron McEneff and Rory Gaffney firing long range efforts wide in the opening few minutes. Derry missed a glorious chance on 12 minutes when a sublime pass by Sadou Diallo released Michael Duffy, who ghosted in behind the Rovers back-line, but his right footed close-range shot, which had Ed McGinty beaten, came back off the post. Moments later striker Afolabi Akinyemi saw his 20-yard strike well held by McGinty. Just before the half-hour mark Duffy went close again, when he broke clear down the left before cutting inside past Roberto Lopes and Daniel Cleary, but his curling effort from just outside the box flashed just past the right-hand post. Derry goalkeeper Brian Maher was called into action on 37 minutes as Danny Mandroiu's whipped free-kick on the edge of the box was well held by the Dubliner. Derry were arguably the better team in the first-half but all that good work was undone in the early stages of the second as Rovers took a grip on the game. The home side took the lead just two minutes after the restart when Josh Honohan got in behind and crossed for Gaffney to tap in from close range to open the scoring. The visitors were fortunate that Rovers didn't add to their lead in the aftermath as substitute Conor Malley sent a curling effort of the top of Maher's bar before Mandriou set up Honohan, whose shot beat the City goalkeeper but flew right across the face of goal and wide. Rovers got their second goal midway through the half thanks to a sensational finish from Gaffney. Dylan Watts picked out the run of the striker in behind and he bore down on goal, before flicking the ball back onto his left foot, outfoxing defender Alex Bannon in the process, and sending a brilliant effort right across Maher and into the net to all but seal the win for the champions-elect. A grim second half for the Candystripes continued to get worse as Bannon was then red-carded. The defender, already cautioned earlier in the second period, lunged in on Honohan and referee Paul McLaughlin had no choice but to end his night early. The game ended with that, with City's more realistic ambitions now European qualification and the FAI Cup, with neither them nor Bohemians able to really lay a glove on Rovers in the title race this season. Shamrock Rovers: McGinty, Cleary (O'Sullivan 85), Lopes, Grace; Honohan, Healy, Watts (Matthews 73'), McEneff, Grant; Mandroiu (McGovern 74), Gaffney (Noonan 68). Derry City: Maher, Bannon, Connolly, Stott, O'Reilly, Winchester, Diallo (R Boyce 85), Fleming; Duffy (Doherty 85), Akinyemi (Mullen 63), L Boyce (Whyte 63). Match Rating: 7/10

Gaffney sinks Derry as Rovers stretch lead at top
Derry City's League of Ireland hopes suffered a major blow as Shamrock Rovers took a significant step towards regaining the title with a 2-0 win at Tallaght Stadium. Going into Sunday's game - which was rescheduled from Friday because of Rovers' European campaign - the Candystripes aimed to keep the pressure on the leaders after second-placed Bohemians fell to a home defeat by Drogheda United on Friday after a promising first-half showing, Derry succumbed to a double from Rovers frontman Rory Gaffney, who struck in the 47th and 65th minutes to push Stephen Bradley's side 10 points clear of Bohs at the - who had defender Alex Bannon sent off late on - are a point further adrift in third and are now winless in their past 10 games against Rovers, stretching back to March significantly, a ninth defeat of the season seriously dampens Tiernan Lynch's hopes of delivering Derry's first title since 1997 in his first season in a frustrating night for the Foylesiders, they failed to capitalise while on top. After a bright Rovers start - which included former Derry attacker Aaron McEneff firing over - Michael Duffy spurned the visitors' biggest opportunity when he struck the post after being picked out by Sadou Dundalk winger Duffy had another opening when he beat Rovers defender Roberto Lopes before firing wide. After a quiet opening half, Rovers quickly took control after the restart with Gaffney supplying the finishing touch for the opener after fine work from Joshua Honohan down the left wing. With Derry rattled, Rovers nearly doubled their lead moments later when Connor Malley - who replaced McEneff at the break - smashed Brian Maher's crossbar. The cushion Rovers craved, however, was secured by Gaffney, who turned sharply on to his left foot to beat Bannon before rifling a shot beyond Maher. With Rovers in control, Derry's woes were compounded when Bannon was dismissed after a foul on Honohan earned the Scottish defender a second yellow thrashing Waterford 7-2 four weeks ago, Derry have picked up just one point from games against Sligo Rovers, Bohemians and Rovers, who look well-placed to regain the title they relinquished to Shelbourne last side are next in action at home to struggling Cork City on Friday (19:45 BST), while Rovers travel to Kosovo to face Ballkani in the third round of Uefa Conference League qualifying on Thursday (19:30).
