Line! Bingo!
The Garlands Ladies Luncheon Club recently left it all to Lady Luck hoping to be the one to call Bingo.
During their monthly meeting on April 24, one could only hear the sounds of markers crossing out numbers called by game-master Pam Foster.
Yeses were hissed under breath as members and guests edged closer to winning the game.
Mandy Jarvis and Jenny Dharmavir walked away as the winners of the day and their victories were joyfully celebrated over lunch, as members charged their glasses and engaged in jovial fellowship.
The May luncheon will take place on May 29 during which Gerhard Ferreira, a blind adventurer, will take the ladies on his journey to summiting Mount Kilimanjaro.

Glenwood Book Fair attracts scores of visitors

THE inaugural Glenwood Book Fair is the talk of the town with organisers and visitors still buzzing about the success of the event that was held at the Phansi Museum from May 29 to 31. The Glenwood fair was organised by Micromega Publications, the organiser of the Durban International Book Fair, and it drew crowds of over 500 people, including vendors and authors. Anivesh Singh, the organiser, said visitors came from as far afield as Gqeberha, Johannesburg, Chile, and Canada to browse through countless amounts of literature and witness the launch of several books. 'One of the highlights of the event was the standing-room-only launch of Shut Your Pothole, the latest collection of political cartoons by the acclaimed Dr Nanda Soobben. Equally well-received was the launch of Healing Ink, an anthology of poetry written by youth,' said Singh. Also Read: Healing Ink calls for poetry submissions The fair coincided with the birthday of Dr Paul Mikula, founder of the Phansi Museum, who was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Durban International Book Fair in 2023. Among those who launched their books was Gordon Michael. His children's book, Admiral, tells the tale of Durban's most famous tortoise, how he ended up at Mitchell Park, and how he got his name. He was in great company as the editor of Healing Ink, 19-year-old Sarada Naidoo, flew in from Gauteng to be part of an interactive session with some of the young contributors reading their poems in public for the first time. The theme for the Glenwood Book Fair was 'Bibliotherapy – healing through writing' which suited Healing Ink, an anthology of poetry by youth on mental health. 'The book has a lot of voices that talk about mental health and their personal struggles. I was inspired to focus on mental health because I have been through a lot of issues myself. I struggled to express myself and used my poetry as an outlet. It was not meant to be published but I hope it serves the purpose, to heal and help whoever needs it,' said Naidoo. With vendors, authors, publishers and visitors singing the praises of the inaugural event, the organisers expressed hope that the Glenwood Book Fair will grow to rival the Grahamstown Arts Festival, with future editions expanding into events and activations throughout the Glenwood area. Edenvale residents called for big fundraiser

To raise much-needed funds for local charities, Edenvale resident Bernerd Blom of Just Blom Events kicked off a fundraising project themed 'From the Vale for the Vale'. The fundraising project, established by community members in association with Ridgeway Racebar, is centred around hosting family-friendly events, providing community members the opportunity to have an enjoyable time together while raising funds for local charities. With an entrance fee of R200, attendees get to enjoy an afternoon out while enjoying lunch, quizzes, music and Bingo. ALSO READ: Better Bedfordview hosts fundraiser with movie night on March 14 The project intends to raise funds for Little Eden Society, Edenvale SPCA and two others, yet to be nominated, by Christmas this year. With a goal of raising R100 000 for the four Edenvale charities, the initiative is more than a third of the way to its goal, having recently raised R33 600 for Little Eden Society. Bernerd explained that with his events company, he's done a lot of charity work in and around Edenvale. 'Everybody from Edenvale says 'we hail from the Vale' but nothing ever gets done. You read about the potholes, everybody moans and groans but nobody does anything. 'Through the project, we want to give something back. Everyone approaches companies for funding and they are tired and at times struggling financially.' To change things up, Bernerd said the idea is to create community and family-based fundraising. After the Edenvale SPCA fundraiser, the next charities will be identified. 'By doing this we intend to give the Edenvale community a bit more hope and unite the community. Hopefully next year we can help eight charities and raise R200 000.' Handed over to the CEO of Little Eden, Ann Coetzee, on April 8 by Bernerd's colleague Keith Agliotti, the funds were raised on March 21 at an event hosted at Ridgeway Racebar. 'This has just been incredible. Thank you to Bernerd, Keith and all those involved who helped raise the funds,' said Ann. 'With the unusual endeavour of hosting a quiz, it makes fundraising fun for something which isn't always fun.' Ann explained that some of the work done by Little Eden is gut-wrenching and heart-breaking. 'We work with not only the most vulnerable but a lot of our residents who are here because of abuse, motor vehicle collisions and incidents beyond birth defects.' Ann said the donation makes an enormous difference for Little Eden which, according to her, costs R60m a year to finance. 'While we do get state funding it only covers about 40% of our expenses. As such we have to raise the outstanding amount.' Ann said it is through the assistance of volunteers and people like Bernerd, who help the society, that it is possible that Little Eden can keep its doors open. 'Just to have someone, like Bernerd who is so passionate about making a difference in the community, who does something different and makes it special is truly unique,' said Ann. The next fundraiser will be held on May 31 at Ridgeway Racebar between 14:00 and 18:00. It will have an entrance fee. Contact Bernerd on 082 857 1106 or email bernerd@ for more information.
