Trump and Putin to meet in Alaska for Ukraine talks next week
"You're looking at territory that's been fought over for three and a half years, a lot of Russians have died. A lot of Ukrainian have died," Trump said at the White House on Friday."It's very complicated. We're going to get some back, we're going to get some switched. There will be some swapping of territories, to the betterment of both."The US president did not provide further details of what that proposal would look like. However, the BBC's US partner CBS News, citing sources familiar with the discussions, reports that the White House is trying to sway European leaders to accept an agreement that would include Russia taking the entire Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and keeping Crimea. It would give up Kherson and Zaporizhzhia as part of the proposed agreement, CBS reports.Earlier on Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Putin had proposed a similar arrangement to Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff during a recent meeting in Moscow.Ukraine has not responded to those reports or the announcement of a meeting between the US and Russian leaders. It remains unclear whether Ukraine and European allies would agree to such a deal, given Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin remain far apart on the conditions for peace.Zelensky has roundly rejected any preconditions for territorial concessions. One senior White House official told CBS the planning for next Friday's meeting is still fluid, and it is still possible that Zelensky could still be involved in some capacity.Moscow has failed to achieve a decisive breakthrough in its full-scale invasion, but occupies around 20% of Ukraine's territory. Ukrainian offensives, meanwhile, have not pushed the Russian forces back.
Three rounds of direct talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul have failed to bring the war closer to an end. And Moscow's military and political preconditions for peace are seen by Kyiv and its allies as the de facto capitulation of Ukraine.Russian demands include Ukraine becoming a neutral state, dramatically reducing its military and abandoning its Nato aspirations, as well as lifting of international sanctions imposed on Russia.Moscow also wants Ukrainian military withdrawal from its four partly occupied regions in the south-east, and the demobilisation of its soldiers.Trump, however, insisted on Friday that the US had "a shot at" a trilateral peace agreement between the countries. "European leaders want to see peace, President Putin, I believe, wants to see peace, and Zelensky wants to see peace," he told reporters."President Zelensky has to get all of his, everything he needs, because he's going to have to get ready to sign something and I think he's working hard to get that done," Trump said.Last month, Trump admitted to the BBC that after all four of Witkoff's previous visits, Putin had disappointed him after talks had initially led to optimism. He has hardened his stance against the Kremlin in recent weeks, imposing a deadline of Friday for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face more sweeping sanctions. But as the deadline approached, the economic threat was quickly overshadowed by plans for Trump and Putin to meet in person to discuss a potential peace deal. There was no announcement of further sanctions on Russia from the White House on Friday.Trump and Putin spoke by phone in February in the first direct exchange between the leaders of the two countries since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.The last time a US president met Putin was in 2021, when Joe Biden met the Russian president at a summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

Texas mayor's vile outburst about sex with man's wife at LGBT event resurfaces
The mayor of Arlington, Texas, has been accused of cursing out a controversial street preacher in a video published seven years ago. Jim Ross, who has been mayor of the Texas city since 2021, was seen in the footage from Vice in 2018 berating another man at the Southern Decadence festival in New Orleans, an LGBT event held annually over Labor Day weekend. According to The Dallas Express, Ross is the man whose face is blurred and was screaming vulgar obscenities about anal sex at Christian street preacher Ruben Israel. Israel, who died in 2023, was known for showing up to pride events with his supporters and holding anti-gay signs. He also spent a lot of time ridiculing Muslims at Islamic events around the country, once saying that the religion brings ' crime, murder and destruction' wherever it goes. Ross was seen holding a beer at the festival in New Orleans and decided to get up in Israel's face to shout him down. 'I believe y'all can have free speech… But this is some hateful s**t and I am a heterosexual guy,' said Ross, who would be elected mayor of Arlington three years after this event. Israel, who died in 2023, was known for showing up to pride events with his supporters and holding anti-gay signs 'You stand out here like you're a bada** motherf***er, hoping somebody starts some s**t,' Ross said, before calling Israel a 'punk motherf***er'. 'You don't think anal sex is good, do you? Have you ever f***ed your old lady in the *ss?' he added. Israel retorted: 'No, who would do that?' 'I'd f*ck your old lady in the *ss,' Ross replied. Then someone handed Ross a megaphone so he could speak to all of Israel's supporters at the same time. 'Shut your *ss, shut your *ss, you little piece of s**t. You ought to talk s**t, these people around here are having a good f***ing time. They don't come to your stupid redneck church and f***ing talk s**t!' he screamed. His rant ended with him calling someone in Israel's camp a 'p***y motherf***er'. He then pushed through the crowd to confront that person. Some Arlington and Tarrant County residents were disappointed or upset about Ross's behavior at the event. 'This is unfortunate. I am not certain what prompted this altercation. He sounds inebriated,' Arlington resident Kathi Arocha told The Express. Elected Texas Republicans were significantly harsher in their condemnation of Ross. 'This video is beyond shocking. What a disgusting piece of human garbage. Mayor Ross should resign immediately,' said Tarrant County GOP Chairman Bo French. 'The now Mayor of Arlington's vile, profanity-laced rant at the late Ruben Israel, a Christian street preacher, is a disgrace. Perhaps the mayor was stressed out because of not being able to pay his taxes of late, but his unprofessional conduct mirrors the worst of today's cursing Democrats. Leadership demands better,' Tarrant County Republican Precinct Chair TK Campbell added. Campbell was referring to Ross's unpaid taxes, which has led the IRS to garnish his salary. Records from the Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector show Ross owes $940.39 in penalties and interest, with a total outstanding debt of $174,945.93 as of June 2025.

White House crypto adviser Bo Hines announces departure
WASHINGTON, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Bo Hines, who headed Republican President Donald Trump's Council of Advisers on Digital Assets, said on Saturday he was leaving his current role and returning to the private sector. Late last month, a cryptocurrency working group led by Hines and including several administration officials outlined the Trump administration's stance on market-defining crypto legislation and called on the U.S. securities regulator to create new rules specific to digital assets. Shortly after taking office in January, Trump had ordered the creation of the crypto working group and tasked it with proposing new regulations, making good on his campaign promise to overhaul U.S. crypto policy. "Serving in President Trump's administration and working alongside our brilliant AI & Crypto Czar @DavidSacks as Executive Director of the White House Crypto Council has been the honor of a lifetime," Hines said in a post on X on Saturday. Sacks, the White House AI czar, praised Hines in response to the post announcing his departure. Hines has twice unsuccessfully run for Congress in North Carolina. Trump last month signed a law to create a regulatory regime for dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies known as stablecoins, a milestone that could pave the way for the digital assets to become an everyday way to make payments and move money. Hines was a backer of that legislation, dubbed the GENIUS Act.

Rubio and JD Vance are Republicans to beat (if there's a vacancy)
R elaxing in the drawing room of Chevening in a red-and-pink chair, JD Vance kicked off his summer break with a mini press conference. Flanked by David Lammy, the vice-president waxed lyrical on everything from Israel to fishing. But he had less to say when a reporter asked if he was the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 2028. 'I don't want to talk about lowly things like politics in this grand house. Come on,' he replied, keen to change the subject. Yet there's no denying that Washington is bubbling with speculation about the succession in three years' time. President Trump set the hare running on Tuesday when he was asked by a Fox reporter whether he would 'clear the field' and confirm that Vance was his heir apparent. Trump didn't go all in but he did concede his deputy was the 'most likely' and 'would be probably favourite at this point'. He then brought up his secretary of state, Marco Rubio, as 'somebody that maybe would get together with JD' on a Republican ticket.
