Animal rights groups criticise SC order on removal of stray dogs

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) Several animal welfare organisations on Monday criticised the Supreme Court's order directing the removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR and their relocation to shelter homes, calling the move unscientific and ineffective.
Hearing a suo motu case initiated on July 28 over stray dog bites leading to rabies in the national capital, the apex court on Monday said that stray dogs should be taken off the streets and housed in shelters, adding that they would not be allowed to return.
A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan also warned of strict action, including contempt proceedings, against anyone obstructing the process.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India said the forced removal of Delhi's community dogs, estimated at around 10 lakh, would create 'chaos and suffering" for both the animals and residents.
'Displacement and jailing of dogs has never worked. Such actions will not curb the dog population, reduce rabies or prevent bites, as dogs eventually return to their territories," said Dr Mini Aravindan, senior director of veterinary affairs at PETA India.
She said the government should instead strengthen sterilisation and vaccination programmes, close illegal pet shops and breeders, and encourage adoption.
Alokparna Sengupta, managing director of Humane World for Animals India, called the move 'misguided" and 'counterproductive".
'Relocating dogs merely shifts the issue elsewhere. Long-term strategies like scaling up Animal Birth Control programmes are the scientifically proven solution," she said. PTI SHB RT

FSSAI holds national meet to review food labelling rules; experts propose front-of-pack warning labels
NEW DELHI: To strengthen India's regulatory framework on food labelling, advertisement, and claims, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Wednesday convened a national stakeholder consultation to review the effectiveness of existing regulations, to address implementation challenges, and explore ways to align with global standards. This is to strengthen consumer protection. The national consultation, which involved various ministries, was conducted following the Supreme Court's order last month, which gave the FSSAI three months to make its recommendations on the proposed move to introduce mandatory warning labels on the front of packaged food items. The meeting came a day after 29 public health organisations issued a consensus statement proposing that the FSSAI implement front‑of‑pack nutrition labelling (FOPL) warning labels (WLs) on food products found high in fats/sugars or salt (HFSS). The consensus statement, published in the Journal of Preventive Medicine Research and Reviews, proposes that the government replace the proposed Indian Nutrition Rating (or Health Star Rating) system with front-of-pack warning labels, restrict marketing to children, and ensure that trade agreements do not undermine public health policy.

Tripura CM congratulates new medical officers
Agency: PTI Agartala, Aug 13 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday congratulated the 216 General Duty Medical Officers (GDMOs) who were recommended for recruitment. The Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) recommended those people for the post of GDMOs, paving the way for filling up 216 posts of doctors in government-run hospitals. However, it could not recommend any candidate against nine posts reserved for persons with disability. Taking to social media, the chief minister congratulated all the eligible candidates for GDMO posts. 'Heartfelt congratulations to all the newly recommended GDMO candidates. Wishing you great success as you embark on this noble journey, serving humanity with dedication and compassion. Your commitment to healthcare will make a difference," he wrote on Facebook. Earlier, the government recruited two superspeciality doctors against 16 sanctioned posts, while appointment letters for 45 specialist doctors will be issued shortly, said a senior health department official. 'The government had wanted to recruit as many as 72 specialist doctors, but did not find suitable candidates. Only 45 candidates were found eligible for specialist doctors", he said. All the eligible GDMOs will be appointed before Durga Puja in late September, the official said, adding that this is the first time that the government has gone for a mega recruitment drive for doctors. SC-constituted task force on suicide prevention visits NIT
Trichy: The Supreme Court-constituted national task force (NTF) to address mental health concerns among students and prevent suicides in higher educational institutions across the country visited the National Institute of Technology, Trichy, on Wednesday. It will visit Bharathidasan University on Thursday. The team led by former Supreme Court judge S Ravindra Bhat and seven other members was formed after the apex court, in March this year, expressed concern over the increasing frequency of student suicides in education institutions, especially premier ones. At NIT-T, the team members inspected the campus and interacted with faculty members and students. "The team will submit an observation report with recommendations, if any, to us. The findings will also be included in the final report to be submitted to the Supreme Court," NIT-T director G Aghila told TOI. NIT-T and IIM-T reported a student suicide each in May this year, within three-day interval. Suicides have also been recorded in several private institutions.
