Nation unveils billion-dollar plan to transform failing factory into next-gen material producer: 'The building blocks of our society'

A struggling metals plant in Whyalla, Australia, is making the shift to becoming greener, thanks to a massive rescue package from the Australian government.
Tech Xplore reported that the plant will continue producing iron and steel. However, this time around, it will use cleaner, more affordable energy instead of the coal power it did before. The Whyalla plant is set to receive as much as $500 million AUD ($317 million USD) from a government fund to rework its power source.
Additional cash will go toward bailing out the failing plant from unpaid bills and saving jobs. Australia produces the most iron ore in the world, according to Reuters. Keeping its steel plants intact is especially important for maintaining the country's leadership in the industry.
Without the Whyalla plant, specifically, "we would be beholden to foreign nations for the building blocks of our society," said Paul Farrow, the Australian Workers' Union secretary.
But the reliance on coal for steel production makes it one of the most difficult industries to make cleaner. Steelmaking accounts for about 7% of the world's polluting gases. Air pollution is linked to several diseases, including heart disease, pneumonia, and lung cancer.
Reduced pollution from the plant's massive makeover will improve local air quality and contribute to a healthier planet overall. Some benefits may happen quickly after the plant gets a green upgrade. After a coal plant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, shut down, the area saw a 42% drop in emergency health visits for heart-related problems.
"The local abundance of solar energy is likely to be a significant advantage for the plant's future," according to the Conversation. One solar farm in the area is set to supply up to 280 megawatts of energy to the plant.
"Investment in green iron and steel will secure future demand for Australia's iron ore as the world moves toward lower emissions iron and steel," the country's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

I'd be excited
I'd be scared
I'd be angry
I wouldn't care

Here's Why Ethereum ETFs are Surging

Ethereum (ETH) is skyrocketing, outperforming Bitcoin in recent sessions. Over the past month, Ethereum has gained 50% while Bitcoin has added about 2%. Since mid-April through early August, ETH-USD has been trading in a steady ascending channel, with swing lows rising from $3,200 to $3,729 and highs moving from $3,936 to $4,013. Ethereum continues to dominate as the leading DeFi platform, with bullish price predictions caused by growing interest in staking, tokenization and institutional adoption. Behind the Drivers Whale and institutional buying have been a driving force behind Ethereum's rally. Ethereum's network activity is also surging — daily transactions hit 1.74M on Aug. 6 (the highest since May 2021), monthly volumes topped 46 million, and staked ETH now accounts for over 15% of total supply. These factors make the case for a sustained demand above $4,000. Institutional Treasuries and ETF Inflows Corporate Ethereum treasuries are rapidly expanding. BitMine holds 833,000 ETH ($3.3B), SharpLinkGaming has 522,000 ETH ($2.1B), and The Ether Machine holds 345,000 ETH ($1.4B). Standard Chartered projects that treasuries could expand to 10% of circulating supply over time, potentially injecting another $50 billion of demand, as quoted on Meanwhile, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs have attracted nearly $5B in net inflows over the past month, outperforming Bitcoin ETFs proportionally and creating a solid long-term support base, as mentioned on the same source. Macro, Regulatory, and Network Tailwinds A 90% probability of a U.S. Fed rate cut in September is boosting risk assets, including Ethereum. On the regulatory side, possible SEC approval for staking within U.S. spot ETH ETFs could unlock more opportunities. On July 17, 2025 BlackRock also filed with the SEC to include staking in its ETHA exchange-traded fund (ETF), which also boosted the sentiment for crypto's second-largest coin. The Shanghai upgrade has unlocked over 24 million staked ETH, improving liquidity dynamics, while layer-2 adoption on networks such as Polygon and Optimism has surged, jointly processing over 20 million transactions in July. ETFs in Focus Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) like 21Shares Core Ethereum ETF CETH, Vaneck Ethereum ETF ETHV, Invesco Galaxy Ethereum ETF QETH, Grayscale Ethereum Trust ETF ETHE and iShares Ethereum Trust ETF ETHA added about 50% each over the past month. Exclusive-Canada's statistics agency publishes data early, then takes it down

By Promit Mukherjee OTTAWA (Reuters) -Statistics Canada posted market-sensitive information about June manufacturing data on its website ahead of the scheduled release date on Friday, the agency's website showed on Thursday. When Reuters asked why the data was visible, the agency took down the page immediately, indicating an error had occurred. "Statistics Canada takes this incident very seriously. We are conducting a thorough review and will determine whether additional safeguards are required to prevent a recurrence," said agency spokeswoman Maryse Carriere. A page from the monthly survey of manufacturing was visible on the agency's website early Thursday. The data was also accompanied by the previous month's revision. Carriere said StatsCan would proceed with plans to release the data on August 15 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time (1330 GMT). The office of Industry Minister Melanie Joly, which has ultimate responsibility for the agency, was not immediately available for comment. Leaks of sensitive data are highly unusual in Canada. StatsCan takes a series of precautions to ensure figures remain under wraps. In May 2020, the agency launched an inquiry after employment data for April was leaked to Bloomberg half an hour ahead of the scheduled release time. The probe found no evidence that the data, which was routinely shared with a small group of senior officials ahead of time, had been leaked by agency personnel.
