Penguins Place Forward Matt Nieto On Waivers

Yahoo28-02-2025
After losing all three of their games after the 4 Nations Face-off break and falling down the Eastern Conference ladder, the Pittsburgh Penguins have begun to make some changes to their roster.
On Wednesday, the Penguins placed forward Matt Nieto on waivers. Nieto has 24 hours to either be claimed or to clear, at which point he can be optioned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate.

Nieto missed most of the 2023-24 season and the beginning of the 2024-25 season because of injuries - and surgeries - to both knees, and he finally made his return to the Penguins' lineup on Nov. 15.
But since then, Nieto has found himself in and out of the press box. The inconsistencies in his defensive game - and his lack of production that includes just one goal and three points on the season - prevented him from having a leg-up on other players.
In potentially related news, forward Boko Imama - currently on injured reserve with an upper-body injury - practiced in full capacity with the team on Wednesday and was rotating in line rushes with Nieto. However, even with Imama back in the picture, the Penguins will have 23 players on their roster - which is still at capacity.
If Nieto clears and is re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, a roster move to call up another forward - perhaps Emil Bemstrom or prospect Vasily Ponomarev - should be expected sometime tomorrow.

Boston Celtics Receive Significant Trade Update

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Celtics have had a very busy offseason, but not in the way that would make fans happy. The Celtics have actually engaged in a firesale, trading away Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday as well as allowing some key pieces — including Al Horford — to walk via free agency. Boston's salary shedding was expected given how deep the Celtics were into the second apron, and with Jayson Tatum sidelined for all of next season due to a torn Achilles, Boston's decision to blow things up and retool definitely made sense. It's also possible the C's aren't done. More news: Insider Drops Jarring Contract Update for Al Horford, Warriors NBA insider Jake Fischer has revealed that there is still a chance that the Celtics move guard Anfernee Simons, whom the team acquired in the trade that sent Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this offseason. "The Celtics, to my understanding, are going to continue to look for salary-shedding opportunities, and they are going to continue to listen to incoming trade calls for Anfernee Simons," Fischer said. Photo bySimons is entering the final year of his contract and is slated to earn $27.7 million during the 2025-26 campaign. "That's not to sit here and say that Anfernee Simons is definitely going to get traded ... but we're still expecting there to be a possibility of Anfernee Simons being traded, as well." Fischer added that the Celtics may wait and see how well Simons plays this coming season and how the team fares in the Eastern Conference before making any decisions. More news: New Boston Celtics Owner Issues Tough Challenge to Joe Mazzulla Simons played in 70 games last season, averaging 19.3 points and 4.8 assists over 32.7 minutes a night on 42.6/36.3/90.2 shooting splits. His efficiency certainly leaves something to be desired, but his ability as a microwave scorer is inherently valuable, and it's important to note that he posted over 20 points per game in back-to-back campaigns in 2022-23 and 2023-24. The 26-year-old's hefty salary for next season makes him a rather difficult trade candidate, so Boston may wish to hold onto him and determine whether or not he can potentially be a part of its long-term future. Yankees' Spencer Jones hits a 443-foot home run as Triple-A hot streak continues

Spencer Jones stayed hot with a monster home run on Wednesday afternoon. The Yankees' power-hitting outfield prospect hit a 443-foot solo shot in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' game against the Buffalo Bisons to get his team on the board in the first inning. The dinger came against former big league All-Star Alek Manoah. Jones' latest long ball comes amidst a ridiculous minor-league season for the 2022 first-round pick. The Vanderbilt product was hitting .284/.379/.610 with 31 home runs, 66 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in stints in Double-A and Triple-A in 2025. In 156 at-bats with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since being promoted in late July, Jones already has 15 homers, including Wednesday's game. 'He's having a good season,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after Jones was called up to Triple-A. 'So it's been good to see him — obviously, the size stands out. The athleticism, the speed and power really stands out. The ability to control the strike zone. He's doing all those things.' 3 Spencer Jones is rounding the bases after his solo home run on Wednesday. Talkin' Yanks/X Strikeouts have remained the biggest blemish on the 6-foot-7, 240-pound lefty's game. He's punched out 122 times in 331 at-bats in the minors this season, a 31.2 percent strikeout rate, which is among the highest in Triple-A. 3 Spencer Jones just after making contact with his first-inning homer on Wednesday. Talkin' Yanks/X Despite the strikeouts, Jones, 24, is starting to push the Yankees' hand despite a crowded outfield and designated hitter spot. Aaron Judge has been the Bombers' designated hitter, pushing usual-DH Giancarlo Stanton to the outfield, as he deals with an elbow injury. 3 New York Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones #78, hitting a 2-run homer in the 6th inning during a spring training game on Feb. 22, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Cody Bellinger and Jasson Domínguez have held down the other two outfielder spots while Trent Grisham has filled in nicely as well. Jones is currently ranked No. 91 on Top 100 prospect rankings. He's ranked as the Yankees' No. 4 prospect behind George Lombard Jr., Carlos Lagrange and Cam Schlitter.

Sixers star Paul George ranked among top small forwards in the league

Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George is one of the top players in the league when he is right and healthy. In his first season with the Sixers, George was limited to only 41 games due to a variety of injuries and averaged only 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. However, George is only a year removed from an All-Star season in 2024 with averages of 22.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in his final season with the Los Angeles Clippers. When George is healthy, even with his age of 35 now, he can still be an impactful player in this league in an effort to help a team win big in the playoffs. HoopsHype ranked the top 26 small forwards in the NBA right now: So, although this ranking seems low for a player who will very likely be a Hall-of-Famer one day, factoring in George's injury troubles over the last year, along with the fact he's already 35 years old with a lot of miles on him, it's just hard to project an All-Star season being ahead for the former Fresno State star. Perhaps he'll prove us wrong, as George was an All-Star merely two seasons ago. Plus, when healthy, he's a top-notch tough-shot-maker and defender, as well as a productive rebounder and playmaker. But the fact that George will head into 2025-26 after having knee surgery this summer is just outright worrisome. The Sixers will be looking for George to bounce back and give Philadelphia the perimeter scoring it is looking for from the wing alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. If those three are ready to go, then the Sixers will be involved in any conversation for the Eastern Conference crown.
