Evercore upgrades Block on lower lending risk and steady consumer trends
Investing.com -- Evercore ISI upgraded shares of Block Inc to Outperform from In Line citing reduced risk in Cash App lending, solid low-end consumer trends, and promising product and sales execution.Analysts also raised its price target to $75 from $58, implying about 21% upside.
The firm said initial concerns over aggressive lending following Block's first-quarter earnings have eased. Evercore believes Block's lending strategy is more balanced than feared, with a diversified risk profile and controlled expansion, especially within Cash App Borrow.
Evercore also noted that low-end consumer spending remains stable, supported by steady unemployment deposits and consistent payment activity. This follows management commentary in May that Cash App gross profit growth improved to 13% year-over-year in April, up from 7% in March.
The analysts highlighted recent product launches at Square, including new hardware and a consolidated app, as positive signs of improved development efficiency following an internal reorganization.
Additionally, Evercore pointed to early success in revamping sales efforts under Nick Molnar, noting progress in tele-sales and field sales teams. These go-to-market changes, combined with product improvements, are seen as setting up Square for stronger growth.
Despite a recent bounce in shares, Block shares are still down 27% year-to-date, and Evercore views the stock as attractively valued relative to peers and historical multiples.

Top Analyst Amit Daryanani Sets Expectations on Apple Stock Ahead of WWDC 2025
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has frequently ranked among the world's two most valuable companies, but it has now slipped to third place as the tech giant faces pressure from multiple fronts, all of which are dampening investor sentiment. Confident Investing Starts Here: The stock has shed 19% this year, dragged down by concerns over antitrust investigations, tariffs, competition in China, and its positioning in AI. The decline makes Apple the weakest performer among the Mag 7 tech giants and puts it well behind the S&P 500, which has gained 1.5% in 2025. So, with WWDC 2025 (June 9–13) on the horizon, will Apple make a push to close the gap with its big tech peers? Not quite, says Evercore's Amit Daryanani, an analyst ranked in the top 4% of Wall Street stock experts. Daryanani thinks that compared to previous years, which featured bigger announcements like Apple Intelligence in 2024 and Vision Pro in 2023, expectations are 'rightfully tempered.' Daryanani reckons the biggest announcement will likely be Apple making its foundation models available to app developers, enabling them to use on-device AI. Additionally, Apple might reveal new partner options beyond OpenAI for its Apple Intelligence platform, which will be built directly into iOS – with Perplexity and Gemini seen as likely candidates. The company is also planning a more extensive update to its operating systems than usual, along with a new naming convention that adds the year at the end, such as iOS 26. Another key announcement is expected to be a centralized gaming app that will come preinstalled on devices – a strategic move, given that gaming makes up around half of App Store revenue. While there could be a few smaller AI-related updates as well, they likely won't be significant enough to shift the prevailing view that Apple is still trailing behind in the AI space. But that take is not quite on the money, says Daryanani. 'We continue to think this narrative underestimates Apple's strategy, which is to focus on smaller scale on-device models and efficient large scale models while sitting out on the AI capex arms race,' the 5-star analyst opined. Rather than trying to match its peers by pouring tens or even hundreds of billions into AI infrastructure, Apple is sticking with a 'more capital light model.' The plan is to let other model providers do the heavy lifting, then charge them – either through revenue sharing or subscription fees – for access to Apple's iOS user base. Daryanani thinks this strategy gives Apple a way to potentially earn strong returns from AI while avoiding the financial risk of investing billions without a 'clear path to monetization.' 'Net/net,' Daryanani summed up, 'We think WWDC will be more low key this year with no hardware announcements or major overhauls on par with last year's Apple Intelligence. Instead we will see some incremental improvements with more meaningful updates expected in 2026.' All told, Daryanani assigns an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating to Apple shares, along with a $250 price target that implies a one-year upside of 23%. The average price target stands at $228.79, a figure that factors in 12-month returns of ~13%. Venmo introduces new debit card benefits and payment options as rival Cash App struggles
Venmo aims to be more than just an app for paying friends with its latest update. On Wednesday, the PayPal-owned payment platform debuted several new debit card benefits and expanded the ability to make payments with retailers such as TikTok Shop and Uber. The updates signal Venmo is trying to become more of a full-service fintech service, not just a peer-to-peer payments app. The revamped Venmo Debit Card, which was first introduced in 2018, now features a tap-to-pay capability, which could help Venmo position itself to capture a larger share of everyday transactions. Additionally, cardholders now get 15% cash back at Lyft, McDonald's, Sephora, Walgreens, and Walmart. Venmo also rolled out the option for cardholders to initiate automatic transfers, enabling them to schedule transfers and set specific balance thresholds that automatically trigger reloading when the balance falls below a certain level. Users can also make international purchases without incurring foreign transaction fees, a notable perk for frequent travelers. For all shoppers, Venmo now allows users to make payments at brands such as Domino's, Instacart, TikTok Shop, and Uber. These updates come after Cash App's Q1 shortfall, as its parent company, Block, revealed that consumers used the app less than anticipated, resulting in a gross profit of $1.38 billion, which was below its expectations. In contrast, Venmo reported a 20% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. The usage of pay with Venmo jumped, with total payment volume increasing by over 50%, and the number of monthly active accounts rising by 30%. ChatGPT can now read your Google Drive and Dropbox
ChatGPT users can now use 'record mode' to take notes on meetings, brainstorming sessions, or thinking-out-loud soliloquies, OpenAI announced Wednesday. ChatGPT can also now connect to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, Sharepoint, and OneDrive, and users can query it for answers about their stored spreadsheets and documents — like 'What was my company's revenue in Q1 last year?' or 'Tell me how many times I took the ferry on my Italy trip last year.' 'ChatGPT will structure and clearly present the data - and respect your organization's existing permissions on the user level - from those documents, with citations,' the company wrote in a release. The recording feature is currently only available for ChatGPT Team users (a subscription plan that will set you back $25 per person per month with an annual subscription of 2+ users). The notes and transcriptions include timestamped citations and action items. Connections to third-party storage services are available for users of ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, or Edu, OpenAI's student-focused offering. The new features are part of OpenAI's push to corner the market on enterprise AI clients, which are big spenders. It launched ChatGPT Enterprise in 2023, less than a year after the launch of ChatGPT, with clients including Block, Canva, The Estée Lauder Companies, and PwC. Then it followed up with the launch of ChatGPT Team, an option for smaller companies or teams, in January 2024. OpenAI now has 3 million 'paying business users,' up from 2 million in February. The company is competing directly with tech giants and startups alike for high-paying enterprise AI clients. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Anthropic are all chasing the same type of business and racing to roll out generative AI features for them, in an industry-wide AI arms race that's predicted to surpass $1 trillion in revenue in less than seven years.
