Austrian association urges FIA members to reject statute changes

CNA3 days ago

MONTREAL :The Austrian Automobile Association (OAMTC) has urged FIA members to reject proposed statute changes it fears will damage motorsport's world governing body and limit opposition to the re-election of president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
In an unsigned June 10 letter emailed to the mobility section of the FIA's world council, and seen by Reuters, the OAMTC set out its opposition to a vote on the agenda of the FIA General Assembly in Macau on Thursday.
"We appeal to all members to support our motion to remove the voting on the proposed FIA statute changes from the General Assembly's agenda," the letter said, suggesting a postponement to a later meeting.
"There is no urgency regarding these proposed changes ... they risk further contributing to the erosion of the FIA's reputation for competent and transparent governance.
"It cannot be - and is not - a coincidence that changes relevant to the FIA's elections have been promoted by the FIA's leadership at the same time as the FIA's incumbent president has announced an intention to run in those elections.
"Where there is even a risk of these changes appearing to benefit the current FIA administration, and not the FIA itself, the changes should not be adopted."
An International Automobile Federation spokesperson in London was not immediately aware of the letter but confirmed the vote was scheduled for Thursday.
Those attending the gathering in Macau could not be reached immediately for comment.
The OAMTC said the eight proposed statute changes raised issues of fairness and consistency, and that they would discourage opposition to Ben Sulayem.
Ben Sulayem is standing for re-election in December, with no rival candidate so far coming forward. He told Reuters last month when he confirmed he was standing that he welcomed competition.
Ben Sulayem recognised he had enemies but said he was confident he had the support of a majority of FIA members.
"I only have to answer to my members. And they are happy. Actually, they are very happy. They are extremely happy," he said.
The Emirati has been involved in several controversies since he took over in 2021 and has been at loggerheads with drivers as well as drawing criticism from FIA insiders, while some senior employees have left.
Briton Robert Reid, a former close ally who quit as an FIA deputy president in April, wrote in his resignation statement of a "fundamental breakdown in governance standards" at the governing body.

F1 leader Piastri stays positive amid damage limitation talk

MONTREAL :Formula One leader Oscar Piastri stayed hopeful after a qualifying session that had McLaren boss Andrea Stella talking of damage limitation in Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix. The Australian will start from third on the grid with teammate Lando Norris, 10 points behind in the standings after nine of 24 races, back in seventh. Mercedes' George Russell took pole position and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, winner for the past three years, joined him on the front row in a repeat of 2024's qualifying top two at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. "Our pace on race days is generally where we're strong," Piastri, winner of five races this season and bidding to become the first Australian to take six in a single campaign, told a news conference. "These two next to me were very quick in the race runs yesterday, so it's certainly not going to be a slam dunk win, but I think we're definitely in the fight." The session, a gift for those talking up bad blood between Russell and Verstappen after a headline clash in Spain between the pair, left McLaren off the pace for once in a scrappy session. It was the first time Mercedes had taken pole this season. "The picture changes completely for the race, that's what we have to focus on," Stella told Sky Sports television. "I think in terms of race pace we should be a bit more comfortable but let's see. This weekend could be one of damage limitation." Norris will certainly have a battle on his hands to get onto the podium. "(I made) a couple of big mistakes, one hitting the wall on the last lap on the exit of turn seven and also the first lap at the final corner. Mistakes that cost me," he said. "We have not been as quick as usual, and it was maybe not the car to take pole position, but it should have been enough for the top three. "It is a very easy track to push 1 per cent too much, and pay the price, and that's what happened today. A podium will be tough because we don't have the pace we have had of the past few races."

Old foes Russell and Verstappen on front row in Canada

MONTREAL :George Russell put his Mercedes on pole position in Canada for the second year in a row on Saturday with Formula One champion Max Verstappen alongside for Red Bull two weeks after they clashed in Spain. McLaren's Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri qualified third with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli in fourth place. Lando Norris, Piastri's British teammate and closest title rival only 10 points behind the Australian after nine of 24 rounds, qualified seventh at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The clash between Russell and Verstappen in Spain remained a talking point going into the weekend, with the Red Bull driver on the brink of a ban as he chases an unprecedented fourth successive Canadian victory. Verstappen, 0.160 slower than the pole time, is only a penalty point away from suspension and Russell will try to turn that to his advantage on the short run down to turn one from the start. "Today was awesome. That last lap was probably one of the most exhilarating laps of my life," said the Briton, adding a cheeky comment on Verstappen's situation. "I've got a few more points on my licence to play with. Let's see." Verstappen had no complaints about his grid position. "I'm already very happy with what we achieved today, to be on the front row. Hopefully, tomorrow we can have a solid race," he said. Ferrari's seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth, at the circuit where he took his first win in 2007 with McLaren. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was sixth and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc eighth. Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar starts ninth and Williams' Alex Albon 10th. Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda missed out on the final shootout in 11th place and will start last after collecting a 10-place grid drop for a red flag breach in Saturday's final practice. That will lift Alpine's Argentine Franco Colapinto to 11th, with his teammate Pierre Gasly alongside Tsunoda on the back row. Norris was fastest in the first phase, with Piastri second, after a brief red flag delay triggered by Albon's car shedding its engine cover and leaving debris on the track. While Albon progressed, teammate Carlos Sainz was left in 17th place - but will move up to 16th - and fuming at what he said was "massive impeding" by Hadjar. Stewards said they would investigate. "Hadjar I'm sure will receive a penalty," Williams team boss James Vowles told Sky Sports television, with a three-place drop looking likely. Canada's only active F1 driver Lance Stroll, who missed the previous race in Spain due to hand and wrist pain, also failed to get over the first hurdle at his home grand prix and will start 17th for Aston Martin.
