The Xavier Musketeers technically didn't have a home court advantage in Wednesday's First Four men's NCAA Tournament game, but try telling that to the Texas Longhorns.
Playing in Dayton, Ohio -- just 47 miles from its campus in Cincinnati -- Xavier staged a second-half rally to defeat Texas 86-80 and advance to the first round of the NCAA's Midwest Regional.
Trailing by double figures midway through the second half, Xavier gained momentum with help from its fans and guard Marcus Miller, who scored a season-high 22 points, 16 of them coming after halftime.
"One of the greatest games I've been a part of," Musketeers coach Sean Miller said. "The energy of the crowd, our fans certainly took advantage of the proximity to Cincinnati. That emotion when we needed them, it was certainly a factor in the game."
Battling foull trouble the entire night, Xavier big man Zach Freemantle put Xavier ahead for good with just under two minutes left with a basket to make it 80-78.
He then finished things off with an emphatic dunk for the game's final points.
"It was a very hard-fought game. That's a very good team we just played, and I'm just thankful to be a part of it," said Freemantle, who scored 15 points in the win.
The emotions were still running high as the Musketeers left the court. While receiving congratulations from fans, Freemantle donned a cowboy hat and flashed the dreaded "Horns Down" gesture toward whatever Texas fans still remained in UD Arena.
The No. 11-seeded Musketeers will next face Midwest No. 6 seed Illinois on Friday in Milwaukee.

Don Nelson, the former Dallas Mavericks head coach, accepted the Chuck Daily Lifetime Achievement Award before Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday. Nelson, who has been living in Hawaii since being away from the game, carried a message with him for the franchise he used to lead on the court. During his press conference, Nelson made sure everyone in the building knew that he was wearing Luka Doncic's new shoes from Nike. Why? He thinks the Mavericks and GM Nico Harrison made a "tremendous mistake" trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers. "I want everybody to know I'm wearing Luka's shoes, his new shoes from Nike…and I'm wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas," Nelson told the crowd. "I think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him. I want everybody to know that." Nelson is a part of a mass group that believes Harrison made the wrong move in trading Doncic to Los Angeles, which was one of the most shocking trades in recent memory anywhere in professional sports. Mavericks fans let Harrison know it, too, as chants filled stadiums home and away, while a group of fans even held a fake funeral outside American Airlines Center days after the deal went down in February. Dallas, though, may have gotten bailed out after the NBA Draft Lottery saw them win the No. 1 overall pick. The Mavericks will presumably take Duke's Cooper Flagg later this month. Still, Mavericks fans weren't happy to see Doncic, who helped lead the team to the NBA Finals last year, moving out west. While the Lakers didn't make a deep NBA Playoffs run, Doncic had similar numbers with the Lakers compared to the Mavericks. He averaged 28.2 points per game (28.1 in Dallas) with 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game over 28 contests. Nelson and many others have their opinions, but what's done is done now for the Mavericks. Time will tell who exactly won the trade. Nelson is a Hall of Famer coach, and one of the best in league history with San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich being the only one with more coaching wins all-time. He had 1,335 regular-season wins and 75 more in the playoffs during his time coaching the Milwaukee Bucks (1976-87), Golden State Warriors (1988-94), New York Knicks (1995-96), Mavericks (1997-2005), and Warriors once more from 2006-10. Venables posed with recruit ATH Braxton Lindsey, which isn't the odd part. Many coaches, including Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, pose with recruits that are on campus. But Venables and Lindsey did the 'Horns Down' hand sign and the Sooners coach has, let's just say, an odd look on his face. Longhorns fans aren't fond of 'Horns Down' but many have embraced the signal as living "rent free" in the heads of Texas' rivals. Many feel it's actually embarrassing to continue to do it. That said, from the point of view of rivals like OU, Arkansas and A&M, it is basically way to shoot the middle finger at UT without being "obscene." But in some situations, it borders on "cringe," and Venables' pic has certainly received ridicule on social media. Do you see the difference? Nets projected to take F Drake Powell 27th overall in 2025 NBA Draft The Brooklyn Nets have five picks to use in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, including four in the first round of what could be a class full of talent. Brooklyn may be trying to pull off a deal or two to lessen the load on player development, but until then, there are players that they can take at each spot, including a player from North Carolina with some upside. "Teams figure to put extra stock into Drake Powell's NBA combine performance and workouts after he spent the year spotting up on 49.2 percent of North Carolina's possessions and taking just 5.7 shots per game," Jonathan Wasserman wrote in his most recent mock draft for Bleacher Report. Wasserman has the Nets taking Powell with the 27th overall pick in the Draft, the pick they received from the Houston Rockets. "Despite the lack of production, there could still be first-round interest based on his outstanding physical profile, defensive projection and 37.9 percent three-point shooting," Wasserman continued. Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 college basketball season, Powell was projected to be a second-round pick after what he showed at North Carolina which wasn't much when just looking at his stats. Powell, 19, averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 37.9% from three-point land in 37 appearances. Powell was an integral part of a Tarheels team that finished with a 23-14 record, allowing them to make the NCAA Tournament where they made it past the First Four before losing in the first round to Ole Miss. While Powell did not put forth much in terms of statistics to show that he would be a prospect with high upside, his performance at the NBA Draft Combine showed scouts differently, as Wasserman alluded to. Powell, who Wasserman compares to New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones, displayed his athletic ability that gave many the impression that he could be an elite defender and shooter on the wing in the right situation.
