Summer fete in Llandrindod Wells raises more than £4,000
The Bracken Summer Fete and Garden Party, held on Friday, at The Bracken Trust Centre, was organised by The Bracken Trust, which offers free cancer support services across mid Wales.
The event raised £4,025.94, which will go towards supporting patients, families, carers, and bereaved relatives.
Emma, charity fundraiser at The Bracken Trust, said: "We cannot thank everyone enough for all the help and support given - there are simply too many people to name individually - but to each and every one of you who had any input into the day, we are truly grateful and could not have pulled off the event without you.
"It truly was the epitome of our lovely, local communities and enforced exactly what it means to be a centre for support in the Heart of Wales."
More than 20 volunteers helped on the day, including trustees, staff, and members of the fundraising team.
This year's event was moved from its usual Saturday slot to a Friday afternoon and evening, attracting around 300 attendees.
Steve Deeks-D'Silva, Llandrindod Wells mayor, opened the event with a speech about the trust.
Food and drink were provided by The Beefy Boys, Deano's Tiki Bar, and Dan & Tom's Ice Cream Van, while Tesco in Llandrindod Wells donated Welsh cakes.
Stalls included cakes, sweets, plants, books, games, and a shop stall.
Entertainment was provided by The Bracken Singers, Dai Hilliard, and Llandrindod Wells Theatre Company.
TFR Entertainment supplied a PA system and other services free of charge.
The event ended with a grand prize draw, with the top prize donated by Graham and Christina Brownley. The Bracken Singers (Image: Bracken Trust) First prize winner Tyler Roberts was in attendance and received warm congratulations from the crowd.
Emma said: "The event raised an incredible £4,025.94, all of which will go directly towards supporting our patients, their families, carers, and bereaved relatives.
"This phenomenal amount could be used to pay for 161 therapies, nurse appointments or counselling sessions, 80 home visits for those unable to attend the centre or a hub in person, or 536 group activity sessions.
"And what's even better is that with this amount, our total fundraising amount since January 2025 has reached £18,459.74 – that's 74 per cent of our £25,000 target for 2025 – and it's only June."

Si King's first 'major solo project' since Dave Myers' death announced by Channel 4
Channel 4 has announced a trio of new lifestyle shows, including a series about the UK railway network fronted by Hairy Bikers star Si King almost 18 months after Dave Myers' death Channel 4 is set to spice up its lifestyle programming with a fresh trio of shows, including a railway adventure series led by Hairy Bikers ' Si King. The upcoming four-part series, tentatively titled Top Of The Stops, will see Si King, 58, delve into the vast network of over 2,600 train stations across the UK, engaging with the dedicated individuals who keep these hubs running smoothly. Produced by the Welsh company Yeti Television, the show promises to take viewers on a journey through some of Britain's most unique train stations, with King accompanied by transport historian Siddy Holloway and architect Damion Burrows. Clemency Green, Channel 4 's senior commissioning editor for lifestyle, expressed excitement about the project: "As the rail network turns 200 years old, this series will spotlight the best of our country's engineering history in a different way. "We're honoured Si will be presenting his first series for More4, and Yeti will no doubt deliver a captivating series that viewers will love to escape into." Since Hairy Bikers co-star and best friend Dave Myer's death in 2024, Si has continued to honour his legacy, participating in a final Hairy Bikers program titled The Hairy Bikers: You'll Never Walk Alone, which aired in December 2024. In January 2025, he joined ITV's This Morning as a regular chef on their cooking segments. Now, almost two years after Dave's death, the star will be fronting his own adventure series on Channel 4. Another addition to the lineup is What Not To Eat, where Dr Tim Spector, alongside Dr Kandi Ejiofor, will guide viewers towards healthier eating by providing nutritious alternatives to junk food, ready meals, and other ultra-processed foods (UPFs). In each episode of the four-part series, a British family grappling with health issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and more will be featured. Spector, at 67, shared his concerns: "It's hard for people to make good dietary choices when what they're sold as 'healthy' food, in my view, can hardly be defined as food at all. "I passionately believe that even quite modest changes to our diet can have a big impact on our health, and I cannot wait to get started on this new series where I'm going to try and change people's lives by changing what they eat." In other news, design guru George Clarke will be tackling home improvement challenges in his upcoming show, George Clarke's Kitchen Vs Garden. At 51, Clarke teams up with garden design maestro Luke Millard for the series, which sees homeowners grappling with tough design decisions. George Clarke's Kitchen Vs Garden will premiere on Wednesday August 13 at 8pm on Channel 4. Top Of The Stops and What Not To Eat are set to grace Channel 4 screens later this year and in 2026, respectively. Green added: "Together, these new titles demonstrate the strategic ambition of Channel 4 lifestyle's commissioning approach: engaging specialist communities, sparking national conversation, celebrating everyday life, and offering unmissable entertainment. "From trains to fast food culture to home renovations, this new slate reflects the broad spectrum of knowledge Channel 4 talent bring to our portfolio, offering audiences what they love, wherever they watch."

Wrexham AFC unveil Patagonia-inspired third kit for 25/26
The Reds are set to compete in the EFL Championship for the season ahead, having enjoyed three consecutive promotions. Today (July 31), the club, along with Macron and United, have revealed the club's 2025/26 third kit - a striking tribute to the Welsh community in Patagonia on the 160th anniversary of the first settlers' arrival. Inspired by the flag of Y Wladfa, the Welsh settlement in Argentina, the new design celebrates the enduring cultural ties between Wales and Patagonia - home to the largest Welsh-speaking community outside of Wales. The kit launch is accompanied by a new short film from Wrexham AFC and United, featuring two choirs - one perched on a cliff in Wales, the other in Patagonia - singing 'Yma o Hyd' ('We're still here'), a Welsh folk anthem of resilience and pride. You can watch that here... For Y Wladfa. Our new 3rd kit sponsored by @united. Celebrating 160 years since Welsh people first moved to Patagonia. 🔴⚪ #WxmAFC It's a powerful visual of voices joined across continents, echoing the connection between the two communities. The collaboration draws inspiration from United's REUNITED documentary, featured in Welcome to Wrexham Season 3. The film followed Patagonians with Welsh heritage as they travelled to Wrexham for the first time, deepening a bond that now lives on through this kit. Wrexham AFC CEO Michael Williamson said: "This new third kit is a powerful tribute to our shared heritage with the Welsh community in Patagonia." He added: "Through its celebration of Y Wladfa, it honours a 160-year bond rooted in resilience, identity, and pride - all values that continue to shape Wrexham AFC today. As we look to the future, we remain deeply connected to our past." Based on the colours of the Patagonia flag, the new shirt features dragon outlines within the blue Argentinian stripes, a Welsh dragon on the nape and the words 'Don't forget where you came from' on an internal tape around the hem. As well as referencing the opening titles to Welcome to Wrexham, it is a reminder that our Patagonian Welsh cousins will always have a home in the 'Land of our fathers'. READ MORE: The collar of the shirt is a white crew neck edged in red, as are the sleeve cuffs. The front features the Macron Hero and Wrexham AFC crest, both applied in heat-transferred silicone, and the United logo across the middle. Sleeve sponsors HP and back-of-shirt sponsors Meta Quest are also featured. The third kit is completed by white shorts with light blue stripes along the thigh edges and red details, and by socks featuring horizontal light blue and white bands, finished with a white top edge and a central red horizontal stripe. Macron CEO Gianluca Pavanello said: "The kit, conceived as a tribute to Y Wladfa, completes a Game Set for Wrexham AFC that we are truly proud of and that we hope will inspire the team to many achievements in the upcoming season. 'At Macron, what really sets us apart in designing kits for our partner clubs is the freedom to start from a completely blank canvas. With the home, away and third kits for 2025/26 season, we feel we have truly captured the spirit and identity of the club, blending tradition with innovation, all while keeping quality at the heart of everything we do.' United AIrlines chief advertising officer Maggie Schmerin added: 'We're excited to see the emotion of Reunited live on in this new kit and short film. 'Connecting people is at the heart of what we do and the symbolism of the Y Wladfa flag on the kit and the two choirs in the film is a beautiful way to honor the deep ties between Wales and Patagonia."

Emma Thompson debuts VERY different new look in first pics of new murder mystery series with Ruth Wilson - and it's perfect for fans of Slow Horses
Emma Thompson was spotted debuting a very different look in the first images from an upcoming murder mystery series, where she plays a private detective with a spiky pixie cut. The London-born actress will play Zoe Boehm in the new Apple TV Plus thriller Down Cemetery Road. Coming to screens in late October, the new series is set to be a hit with fans of knockout crime show Slow Horses, as it's based on writer Mick Heron's other novels. The plot follows the fallout of the sudden explosion of a home in a sleepy, suburban Oxford area, which leads to the mysterious disappearance of a young girl. Local resident Sarah Tucker, played by Ruth Wilson, takes an interest in the case and enlists the help of private investigator Zoe Boehm, played by 66-year-old Thompson. In the first images from the show, Thompson is seen with a striking silver jagged pixie cut, which only forms part of her rough-around-the-edges look. The moody detective wears her flowing leather jacket with the collar firmly upwards, and opts for 'no nonsense' chunky black eyeliner. 'The sleuthing pair suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead,' the synopsis reads. The hotly anticipated eight-part series is set to land on Apple TV Plus from October 29, with weekly episodes and a two-part first drop. The programme was adapted for the TV by screenwriter Morwenna Banks, who has also worked on Slow Horses for the streaming platform. And author Mick Heron played a vital role as one of the executive producers behind the thriller. The images come as JK Rowling shared a barbed critique of Thompson's view on the sex industry in a sarcastic online post. The Oscar-winning actress made comments during a live Q&A at a screening of her 2022 film Good Luck to You that sex should be recommended by the NHS because it is so important to our health and wellbeing. Thompson, who played Professor Trelawney in the films, said: 'What if when you're unwell, you can't make connections, but you need sex? 'You need sex because it's part of our health plan, if you like. It should really be on the NHS.' She then admitted that some of her friends even hire escorts for this purpose. Now, the Harry Potter author has hit out at the comments sarcastically writing on X: 'Yes, funny how you never hear, 'we're so delighted - Tatiana got straight As, so now she's trying to choose between law, medicine and prostitution! 'It's her decision, of course, so we're trying not to influence her, but Nigel and I both think she'd make a MARVELLOUS sex worker.' She continued: 'I'm going out on a limb here, but I suspect most sex workers didn't have the life choices available to a Cambridge-educated actress raised in Hampstead.' And when one user said Rowling should not 'look down on sex workers', she hit back again to defend her position. 'When did you last meet someone who was trafficked into accountancy? In your experience, do an unusually high number of addicts and abuse survivors tend to become plumbers? Does the average quantity surveyor face a significantly elevated risk of early death because of his job? 'I don't look down on sex workers, I look down on the trade in vulnerable people's bodies, and on the immense arrogance and wilful blindness of privileged people who think that by reframing the sale of human bodies as 'a job like any other', inconvenient and ugly facts about that trade simply disappear.' The two former colleagues have not often had similar views in the past with Rowling being a prominent advocate of gender critical views, whereas Dame Emma Thompson signed an open letter in support of trans rights in Scotland in 2019. The author has had similar run-ins with some of the other franchise stars such as Sean Biggerstaff, who savaged JK Rowling on social media, calling her an 'obsessed billionaire' and 'bigoted' for her views on transgender rights.
