Whitecaps boost unbeaten mark to 10 games after 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake
VANCOUVER – Jayden Nelson scored a pretty goal in the 20th minute and centre back Tristan Blackmon sealed the victory in the 70th as the Vancouver Whitecaps continued their unbeaten streak with a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer play Saturday night.
Vancouver is undefeated in 10 games (6-0-4) across all competitions.
Salt Lake's Diego Luna scored on a late penalty kick in the sixth minute of extra time.
Nelson's goal came on a dazzling individual effort. The speedy winger took a pass from midfielder Ralph Priso and sprinted down field. He weaved between two Salt Lake defenders then tucked a right-footed shot just inside the corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
The crowd of 19,762 at BC Place Stadium roared their approval.
Nelson had another golden chance about nine minutes later. He was alone in front of the net when a pass bounced in front of him, but he missed connecting the ball with his foot.
Blackmon made no mistake on his goal, taking a pass from midfielder Sebastain Berhalter and blowing a shot past Salt Lake goalkeeper Rafel Cabral. Berhalter has three goals and three assists in his last four games.
That goal came just minutes after Daniel Rios was stopped on a penalty kick with Cabral making a great one-handed stop.
The Salt Lake side was awarded the penalty kick after Berhalter was called for stepping on winger Justen Glad's heel.
Vancouver continues to lead all MLS teams with an 8-1-2 record for 26 points.
The Whitecaps played the game without striker Brian White, who was named MSL player of the month after scoring eight goals in seven appearances in April. He didn't dress due to hamstring tightness.
Real Salt Lake (4-7-0) dropped to 11th in the Western Conference.
Vancouver got lucky in the 42nd minute when Real Salt Lake missed on a glorious chance. Midfielder Zavier Gozo took the ball to the side of the Whitecaps net then passed across the front of the goal. Left winger Alexandros Katranis had an open net but sent his header wide, bringing a sigh of relief from the crowd.
Real Salt Lake looked to have earned a penalty kick in the 59th minute when Vancouver's Andres Cubas was called after Gozo sprawled to the ground in the box. With the crowd booing the call an instant replay showed Cubas didn't touch Gozo.
The Whitecaps had the fans on their feet in the 15th minute. Midfielder Jean-Claude Ngando fed a pass to Nelson who had nothing but green grass between him and the goal. Nelson elected to pass to Edier Ocampo breaking in on the other wing but Cabral made a sliding block on the ball.
It's been a busy 10 days for the Whitecaps. Vancouver defeated Inter Miami CF 5-1 over two games to advance to the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup plus beat Minnesota United FC 3-1 in a MLS road game.

‘We can't live in fear': Vancouver prepares for large-scale weekend events after Cirque du Soleil crash
Several large events and festivals are taking place this weekend and police are ramping up security as fears remain high. Police are gearing up for a weekend filled with large-scale festivals in Vancouver, just six weeks after the Lapu-Lapu Day attack. The festivities also come in the wake of a frightening incident at Pacific Coliseum, during which a driver apparently in the midst of mental health crisis crashed into the entrance during a Thursday performance of Cirque du Soleil: Crystal. The Vancouver Police Department said more than 300 additional officers will be deployed across the city from Friday to Sunday, using the newly acquired median barriers expedited last month for the Vancouver Marathon. On Saturday, the B.C. Lions kick off their season with a performance by Snoop Dogg before the game. A festival is also scheduled for Terry Fox Square to welcome the more than 50,000 fans. The team's president, Duane Vienneau, said parts of Robson and Beatty streets will be closed to traffic and lined with archer barriers to help secure the area. 'We're safety first,' said Vienneau. Vienneau and others responsible for holding events across the city have been working to ensure that everyone attending is safe – and feels safe. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to flood Commercial Drive on Sunday for Italian Day on the Drive, and similar to the B.C. Lions home opener, archer barriers will stretch across closed roads to prevent vehicles from getting near crowds. 'We can't live in fear,' said Melissa De Genova, vice-president of the Italian Day Festival Society board. 'We have the utmost confidence in the VPD and the city has been very diligent in the planning.' Other events taking place this weekend in the Lower Mainland include the West Vancouver Community Cultural Fest, Burnaby Heights Hats Off Day, Doors Open Richmond, and Car Free Day Newton in Surrey. The Surrey Police Service told CTV News it is prepared to welcome the expected crowd of 5,000 to the latter event.

Saskatchewan Rattlers aim to break franchise attendance record against Bandits
When the Saskatchewan Rattlers take to the court on Sunday afternoon hosting the Vancouver Bandits, not only will the team be searching for their first home win of the 2025 Canadian Elite Basketball League, they'll be surrounded by what they hope will be a record-breaking crowd. This after the 1-4 Rattlers fell 105-65 to the Bandits in their CEBL season opener back on May 15. 'Vancouver is coming back and we're ready to get a little bit of revenge onto them,' said Rattlers manager of ticket sales and premium seating Graham Forrester. 'We're looking to set a new attendance record, so that's obviously weighing heavily on everybody's minds here of filling the 'Snake Pit' and making sure everyone is getting the best experience.' The Rattlers will be aiming to smash their previous single-game attendance record of just over 3,200 fans on Sunday with the team projecting at least 3,600 fans through the door by opening tip-off. Story continues below advertisement According to Forrester, the weekend tilt against Vancouver had been identified as a big seller and has only ramped up over the last few weeks, with new ticket and drink promotions. 'We've had some big groups come in prior to the season,' said Forrester. 'So we knew that it already was going to be a really successful game. We started seeing a little bit more momentum, we launched our 'Family Pack' and that started off really, really well. We were like, 'OK, we've got a really good shot to fill the 'Snake Pit.'' Story continues below advertisement It's a gesture they hope will provide a few hours of normalcy for those residents who have had to flee their homes. 'Obviously we're not donating toothbrushes and the basic necessities for life,' said Forrester. 'But if we can give them an experience for two, two and a half hours where they can take their mind off things that are going on back in their home communities, that's what we can do as a pro basketball team. 'I think the community is starting to see that as well and they've actually said to us the importance of donation of activities is really, really important.' The push for a new record attendance benchmark comes after teams like the Winnipeg Sea Bears and Calgary Surge have packed their respective arenas, as well as the CEBL playing its first outdoor game between the Montreal Alliance and Ottawa BlackJacks at IGA Stadium which had to be declared a no-contest due to rain. Forrester added that success around the league is pushing the Rattlers to raise their own standards and bring more attention on the CEBL as a whole. 'I think the whole team is incredibly excited,' said Forrester. 'The whole organization is excited, I think even our league is excited. We've seen some huge crowds across the entire league. Right now, us keeping pace with them is happening and it's important to continue happening. I think everybody is really excited to see that place full.' Story continues below advertisement Sunday's game will be a 4 p.m. tip-off at SaskTel Centre, while the Rattlers will kick off the weekend with a Friday evening tilt in Calgary against the Surge.
