Angels star Mike Trout activated, in lineup as DH

May 30 - Activated by the Los Angeles Angels on Friday after spending one month on the injured list, Mike Trout is in the starting lineup as the designated hitter against the host Cleveland Guardians. Trout, 33, is batting fifth in his return. Outfielder Matthew Lugo was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Trout, a three-time American League Most Valuable Player, sustained a bone bruise on his surgically repaired left knee while trying to beat out a grounder on April 30. This week, Trout resumed running the bases and taking batting practice. He returns to an Angels team that has lost five games in a row after winning its previous eight. Trout is in his first season as a right fielder, having moved from center field in an attempt to maintain his health. In his absence, Jo Adell served as the primary right fielder and hit .200 with four homers and seven RBIs over 23 games this month. That average is actually higher than Trout's .179 this year. He's also carrying a subpar .264 on-base percentage. However, Trout has nine homers, 18 RBIs and a .462 slugging percentage through 29 games. Trout, 33, captured AL Rookie of the Year in 2012, then won AL MVP honors in 2014, 2016 and 2019. He also finished second in MVP voting in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018. The 11-time All-Star is a nine-time Silver Slugger honoree. Across 1,547 games in 15 seasons, Trout owns a career batting slash line of .297/.408/.579 with 387 homers, 972 RBIs and 214 stolen bases. His total of 85.8 Win Shares, per Baseball-Reference, ranks fifth all-time among center fielders -- trailing only Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Mickey Mantle. --Field Level Media

Angels activate reliever Robert Stephenson and DFA infielder Tim Anderson

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Sixteen months after signing a $33 million, three-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, reliever Robert Stephenson is finally ready to throw a pitch for his new team. Stephenson missed last season after undergoing elbow surgery in May 2024 that included an ulnar collateral ligament repair with an internal brace. He was activated off the injured list for Wednesday night's series finale against the New York Yankees. The Angels also selected the contract of utilityman Scott Kingery from Triple-A Salt Lake. Veteran infielder Tim Anderson, a two-time All-Star who batted .205 in 31 games for the Angels, was designated for assignment, and reliever Jake Eder was optioned to Salt Lake. 'Honestly, to me, this is up there with making my (big league) debut, you know?' Stephenson said. 'I feel like it's going to be pretty special for me. … It felt different walking into the clubhouse. Like, I can actually contribute something.' The 33-year-old right-hander went 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA in 42 games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023, striking out 60 batters and walking eight in 38 1/3 innings. He should bolster an Angels bullpen that entered Wednesday with a major league-worst 6.31 ERA and lost hard-throwing setup man Ben Joyce to season-ending shoulder surgery in late April. Stephenson had a 3.60 ERA over five innings in five minor league rehabilitation appearances. He mixes a 97 mph fastball with a sharp 85 mph slider and an 89 mph splitter. Los Angeles manager Ron Washington said he hopes to ease Stephenson back into a high-leverage role, but he wouldn't rule out the possibility of immediately using Stephenson to hold an eighth-inning lead for closer Kenley Jansen. 'I want to give him a chance to get settled in,' Washington said, 'but if the opportunity presents itself (in a high-leverage spot) and he's the best we have at the time, it will happen.' ___
