A new study published by oceanographers from the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS) found that remote atoll coral reefs are more resilient than previously thought because of their ability to exchange larvae across the coral systems.
The AIMS news release, published on Phys.org, detailed how coral reefs are suffering from the effects of the climate crisis. Rising global temperatures can cause coral to become stressed and expel the algae that live in their tissues, leaving their white skeletons exposed.
Bleaching, the name for this process, doesn't kill the coral but leaves it vulnerable to starvation and disease. The new study shows even isolated reefs can self-seed and make a comeback.
Researchers studied isolated atoll coral reefs — ring-shaped coral reefs, islands, or series of islets that surround a lagoon — in the Scott system of reefs off the northwest coast of Australia. The team found that the corals are able to share larvae across the reef system and recover from disturbances over a period of years.
Isolated atoll reefs are more susceptible to damage from incidents like warmer waters and increasingly severe storms because they're not connected to other reefs, which could share new corals and help recovery.
But the new research shows that these communities are actually able to share larvae within their own systems to allow new growth, and recuperate even after multiple damaging events.
Authors of the new study wrote, "Our findings highlight the previously overlooked role of local scale dispersal in driving recovery of isolated reef systems and emphasize the importance of targeted local management actions."
If scientists can enhance and preserve local connectivity among the reefs, the coral systems could retain better health and build resilience. Reef systems are critical for the health of all marine ecosystems, and they help protect shore communities from storms.
Long-distance dispersal could also aid reef recovery, but more data needs to be collected on the subject. Researchers for the study noted, "Substantially more work is required to understand the role of long-distance dispersal (both from and to other reefs)."

The AIMS team used extensive modeling to incorporate ocean currents and other variables into their study. Dr. Camille Grimaldi, an AIMS research scientist, said, "Our study shows that the internal dynamics of a reef system play a key role and influence how effectively a reef can self-seed and recover from disturbances."

The reef had its worst summer on record in 2024 when the world underwent a rare global mass coral bleaching event impacting dozens of countries. Surging water temperatures combined with an El Niño weather pattern caused stressed corals to expel algae and lose their color. An official analysis released on Wednesday now shows the reef lost between a quarter to a third of its hard coral cover across three main regions, according to the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). In some areas, particularly hard-hit reefs lost up to 70% of their living coral. The 2024 bleaching event 'had the largest spatial footprint ever recorded on the (Great Barrier Reef),' the report found. 'The declines in the north and south were the largest in a single year since monitoring began 39 years ago.' CNN witnessed the widespread bleaching in visits to the Great Barrier Reef in 2024 – and to the Ningaloo Reef on Australia's western coast in 2025 – during which one scientist described the devastation as like 'wildfires underwater.' The massive loss across the 2,300-kilometer (1,400-mile) ecosystem is especially discouraging after it experienced significant growth in the last few years, with some fast-growing corals that helped the reef recover from previous bleaching. But these corals 'were known to be extremely vulnerable and one bad summer away from losing those gains,' the report said – adding that those fears came true last year, with the fast-growing corals among the most severely impacted. 'It raises the prospect that the Great Barrier Reef may reach a point from which it cannot recover,' it warned. Covering nearly 133,000 square miles (345,000 square kilometers), the Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef, home to more than 1,500 species of fish and 411 species of hard corals. It contributes billions of dollars to the Australian economy each year, mainly through tourism, and is promoted heavily to foreign visitors as one of the country's – and the world's – greatest natural wonders. But all that is in danger, with activists and scientists warning with increasing urgency over the past decade that the reef's future is at risk. Severe mass bleaching at the Great Barrier Reef had previously been observed in 1998, 2002, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022. Corals can recover from bleaching if the temperatures return to normal, but they will perish if the water stays warmer than usual. Water temperatures spiked again early this year during Australia's summer, peaking in March and causing even more bleaching – though its impacts have not yet been fully measured and were not included in this report. Oceans are now storing 90% of the excess heat from global warming — and each of the last eight years has set a new record for the amount of heat stored in the ocean. The destruction of marine ecosystems would deliver an effective death sentence for around a quarter of all species that depend on reefs for survival, scientists warn. Reefs also provide vital protection for coastlines, reducing the impact of floods, cyclones and sea level rise. The bleaching is 'a call to action,' said the non-profit Queensland Conservation Council on Wednesday after the report's release. The council, the peak body for dozens of Queensland's environment groups, called on state and national leaders to reduce emissions and shut down coal power stations. Australian is transitioning to renewable energy, like other developed nations, but critics say it's not happening fast enough. 'The coral reefs of the future are unlikely to look like those of the past. The loss of biodiversity seems inevitable,' the report read, urging more research into reef adaptation and protection while the world works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Parts of the Great Barrier Reef have suffered the steepest annual decline in live coral cover following the worst bleaching events in nearly four decades. The Australian Institute of Marine Science, or Aims, said that two of the three areas monitored by researchers since 1986 have suffered coral losses this year. The hard coral cover on the reef has declined largely due to heat stress from climate change. This heat stress has sparked mass bleaching events, which have been worsened by cyclones, flooding, and outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish. The latest findings are a warning that the Great Barrier Reef faces a "volatile" future and may reach a 'point from which it cannot recover'. The Great Barrier Reef, located off the northeast coast of Australia, is the world's largest living coral reef system and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Stretching across 2,400km off the Queensland coast, it comprises thousands of individual reefs and hundreds of islands made of over 600 types of hard and soft corals. Aims surveyed 124 coral reefs between August 2024 and May 2025 and found that coral cover had dropped sharply after a record-breaking marine heatwave in 2024, 'prompting grave fears over the trajectory of the natural wonder'. "We are now seeing increased volatility in the levels of hard coral cover," said Mike Emslie, head of the institute's long-term monitoring programme. "This is a phenomenon that emerged over the last 15 years and points to an ecosystem under stress." Aims says repeated mass coral bleaching is becoming more frequent as the world warms. Coral bleaching is a stress response in which corals expel the algae that give them colour and energy, turning white because the water it lives in is too hot and risking death if conditions don't improve. Mass bleaching was extremely rare before the 1990s. The first two major mass bleaching events weren't recorded until 1998 and 2002. In the years since, Aims noted, the Great Barrier Reef has "experienced unprecedented levels of heat stress, which caused the most spatially extensive and severe bleaching recorded to date'. This was 'the first time we have seen substantial bleaching impacts in the southern region, leading to the largest annual decline since monitoring began', Dr Emslie said. In the wake of the latest mass bleaching event in 2024, aerial surveys showed around three quarters of the 1,080 reefs assessed had some bleaching. And on 40 per cent of those reefs, over half the corals had turned white. It was the fifth mass bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef since 2016 and had the largest spatial footprint recorded, with high to extreme bleaching prevalence across the three regions, Aims CEO Professor Selina Stead said. Despite the significant losses, Aims said the Great Barrier Reef still had more coral than many other reefs worldwide and remained a major tourist attraction. 'It's possible to find areas that still look good in an ecosystem this huge,' Aims said, 'but that doesn't mean the large-scale average hasn't dropped.' The Great Barrier Reef is not on Unesco's list of endangered world heritage sites, though the UN recommends it should be added. Australia has lobbied for years to keep the reef, which contributes billions of dollars a year to the economy, off the list as it could damage tourism.
