APS opens first Asia MRO facility in Shah Alam
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari highlighted the facility's role in enhancing the state's aerospace ecosystem, noting that nearly 67 per cent of Malaysia's MRO activities are based in Selangor. 'With APS now part of our MRO industry, we are on track to achieve our target of capturing 70 per cent of national MRO activities by 2030,' he said during the opening ceremony.
APS chose Selangor for its third global base after Brazil and the US, citing the state's strategic location, skilled workforce, and business-friendly policies. The company is the only MRO provider in Asia and the Americas licensed for Collins Aerospace's proprietary 568F propeller repairs, a critical service for turboprop fleets.
The new 30,096-square-foot facility, backed by a US$1 million investment, features a climate-controlled factory floor and a three-story office. It will initially service ATR 42/72 and Airbus C295 propellers, with plans to expand capabilities. APS CEO Daniel Colbert emphasized the facility's role in workforce development and regional customer support, adding that 100 local jobs have been created.
Certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, the facility is awaiting approvals from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.

The High Commission of Malaysia in Sri Lanka hosted a dinner with the Asean heads of mission to celebrate the occasion in Colombo on Friday. Sri Lanka's Deputy Foreign Minister Arun Hemachandra joined it as the guest of honour. The Asean Dhaka Committee, comprising the Asean heads of mission in Bangladesh, held a celebration on Thursday. Bangladesh's Culture Ministry Advisor Mustafa Sarwar Farooki was the chief guest at the event held at the Royal Thai Embassy. Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mohd Shuhada Othman in his remarks highlighted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration, Asean Community Vision 2045 and promoted the upcoming 47th Asean Summit. The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad organised a discussion titled "Pakistan and Asean: Partners in Peace, Progress, and Regional Prosperity" in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Asean Committee in Islamabad on Thursday. WTO cuts 2026 global merchandise trade growth forecast to 1.8 pct on higher U.S. tariffs
GENEVA, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Friday lowered its forecast for global merchandise trade growth in 2026 to 1.8 percent from the previous estimate of 2.5 percent due to higher tariffs. In its latest trade forecast update, the WTO said recent tariff changes are expected to have an overall negative impact on the outlook for global trade. Higher "reciprocal tariff" rates introduced by the United States on Aug. 7 are expected to weigh increasingly on U.S. imports and depress exports of U.S. trading partners in the second half of 2025 and in 2026, the WTO said. The WTO now projects world merchandise trade to grow by 0.9 percent in 2025, revising its earlier forecast of a 0.2 percent contraction made in mid-April following the U.S. announcement of "reciprocal tariffs" and a temporary 90-day pause on some of them. The WTO noted that the revised growth outlook is largely driven by frontloading of U.S. imports, but emphasized that the forecast remains well below the pre-tariff estimate of 2.7 percent. By region, Asian economies are projected to remain the largest positive driver of world merchandise trade growth in 2025, while North America will weigh negatively on global trade growth in both 2025 and 2026, according to the forecast. WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala noted that the full impact of recent tariff measures is still unfolding. "The shadow of tariff uncertainty continues to weigh heavily on business confidence, investment and supply chains. Uncertainty remains one of the most disruptive forces in the global trading environment," she said.
