"Once I knew I was close, to be honest, I was a bit disappointed," he said.
It was a rolling start because I thought that was going to take away some opportunity, but I got a good exit out of Turn 1, was able to stay close.
"When I was that close, I knew I was just going to lift a little bit less than Lando did and try and keep it on the track.
"And, yeah, it was a bit lively up over the hill, but, no, I managed to make it stick.
"And then from there, the tire helped me out. So, no, proud of my first lap."
The title leader showed his overtaking chops on the opening lap. He stayed patient and waited for Norris to have a slide before making the move.
Once Piastri got past his teammate, the race became straightforward with clear air in front of the Aussie and set the fastest lap of the race as soon as he got in front.
With his sixth win of the season, he leads the Drivers' Championship by 16 points, a solid lead with one more race until the summer break in August.

Rival's huge Oscar Piastri title statement after admission from McLaren teammate
Mercedes driver George Russell has given Oscar Piastri the edge to claim the Formula One world title ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris after marvelling at the Aussie's consistency this year. While Norris suggests the title will be decided by the driver who makes the fewest mistakes in qualifying, ahead of this weekend's Hungarian grand prix. Piastri will take a 16-point lead over his McLaren teammate into the next race in Hungary, where the Aussie will be looking to extend his lead in the drivers' championship standings. Piastri will be buoyed by his victory at last week's Belgian GP, where he overtook Norris on the first lap, on his way to a sixth race win of the season. Norris has claimed four victories himself this season but the ledger could have read 7-4 in the Aussie's favour, if he wasn't denied victory at the British Grand Prix. Piastri copped a penalty for braking behind the safety car at Silverstone, which handed Norris victory, but Mercedes rival Russell believes the Aussie looms as the man to beat this year. "Oscar's been very solid. I think he gets the most out of himself every single weekend, is my takeaway, he's very consistent, doesn't get flustered, and just delivers reliably, Russell said. "Whereas I feel Lando's got huge raw speed, but probably the hit rate isn't as high as Oscar's. "But they're two incredible drivers, and I think they'll continue fighting for quite a while. But Oscar doesn't seem very phased." Russell said Piastri's slip-up at the British GP shows how quickly momentum can shift in the title race but has been thoroughly impressed by Piastri's improvement this season. "It swings so quickly, doesn't it? The momentum shifts so quickly," he added. "But I think Oscar was a bit unfortunate in Silverstone. He could have also won the race in Austria, it could have gone very differently. "Lando, over the last three years, has beaten Oscar over that period, so you can't count out either of them, but I think it's definitely fair to say Oscar's sort of stepped up this year." Lando Norris identifies key to F1 title race Norris accepted there were 'certain things' he could have done better in last week's Belgian GP but admitted it would not have guaranteed victory. But the Briton insists that whoever makes the fewest mistakes - particularly in qualifying this year - will almost inevitably end up winning the title. "It's just who qualifies first and second more often. And you kind of just hold on in Turn One and then go from there," Norris said. "There's not been many races where positions have swapped through a race. So therefore it's more who can make the least mistakes when they qualify first." The Briton admits he's had a tendency to push the envelope too often, when a more conservative approach to his driving would be better. "Sometimes this year, even 95% would have been fine," Norris said. "These are some of my mistakes from earlier on in the season. I mean, I tried before at 101%. Sometimes that's amazing. Sometimes that's, I think, as good as you can get. I do believe that. But also at times I should drive at 95% or even 90% and that's not enough to be on pole or P2 sometimes." "Just trying to put together a solid, consistent year is ultimately going to be important," Piastri said. "The pace in the last few weekends, especially Spa, I've been very confident in and very proud of. "I'm more than capable of continuing that for the rest of the year. I'm confident that I can do it, but it's not going to be easy."
