Three Chinese men arrested in Japan after rustling luggage reveals thousands of endangered hermit crabs
A hotel worker in Amami City, on one of the archipelago's southwestern subtropical islands, reported the suspected crime to environmental authorities on Tuesday.
The guests 'had asked the hotel to watch their suitcases, and the suitcases made a rustling noise', a police official told AFP.
When two of the three guests returned to the hotel, police asked them to reveal the contents of their luggage.
Inside the three suitcases police found around 95 kilogrammes (210 pounds) of spiral-shelled, protected hermit crabs.
These hermit crabs are from a group of species designated as 'national natural monuments' because of their cultural and scientific value.
The third man was found to have 65 kilogrammes of the hermit crabs in another set of three suitcases, police said.
There were 'thousands' of hermit crabs in their possession, the police spokesman added. Local media reported each of the hermit crabs can command up to 20,000 yen (RM590).
The three men were arrested on Wednesday.
'Our investigation is ongoing to identify whether they had (the hermit crabs) to sell them or to keep them as pets or to eat them,' he said.

Indonesia launches special task force to tackle unruly tourists in Bali
DENPASAR, Aug 9 — In response to a surge in immigration violations and criminal incidents involving foreign visitors, Indonesia's Immigration and Correctional Services Ministry has established a dedicated task force to monitor and manage unruly tourists on the island of Bali, The Jakarta Post reported yesterday. Comprising 100 immigration officers, the task force will carry out frequent and random patrols across 10 of Bali's most popular tourist hotspots, including Canggu in North Kuta, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Matahari Terbit and Benoa Harbours, Pecatu, Mertasari Beach, Kuta, Gianyar, Nusa Dua, and Jimbaran. 'This initiative is a direct response to President Prabowo Subianto's mandate to uphold stability and security in Bali, one of Indonesia's foremost tourist destinations,' Agus said, as reported by the Jakarta-based English daily. The ministry aims for the task force to provide swift responses to immigration violations, deter further offenses, and safeguard local communities from disturbances linked to foreign visitors. Bali has experienced a notable increase in immigration infractions in recent years, largely attributed to overtourism. This is not the first time such an initiative has been launched in Bali. Similar task forces have previously been established, including the 'Satgas Bali Becik' formed in 2023 by the Directorate General of Immigration to combat misconduct by foreign tourists. That task force focused on enforcing regulations and addressing immigration violations to protect the island's social fabric. In addition to these task forces, the Indonesian government intensified penalties for foreigners breaching immigration laws or overstaying visas in Bali. Since 2024, penalties have increased significantly, ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment in extreme cases — up from previous maximum jail terms of one year. These harsher measures formed part of a wider crackdown that also included boosting patrol officers, launching a tourist hotline, and implementing a tourist tax.

Cigarette smuggler's 200km high-speed run from Lahad Datu to Tawau ends in dramatic crash
TAWAU, Aug 9 — A cigarette smuggler's attempt to escape arrest by speeding 200km from Lahad Datu to here ended when he crashed into a tree in Kg Titingan early Friday. Sabah Region 4 Marine Police (PPM) Commander, ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim, said the suspect's arrest, along with the seizure of 678,400 sticks of cigarettes of various brands and a white van – all worth more than RM1 million – took place at around 2.20 am. 'The suspect, a 43-year-old foreigner male, and the seized goods have been brought to the Tawau Operations Base for further investigation,' he said in a statement. Nazri said the initial attempt to arrest the suspect occurred in the Silam area, when the van was seen acting suspiciously. However, the suspect made a desperate move by speeding towards Kunak before entering Tawau. The suspect's refusal to stop despite being ordered led the Marine Enforcement Unit (Ungerin) and the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) to seek assistance from the police teams at the Kunak and Tawau District Police Headquarters. 'The chase and arrest were successful after the van lost control and crashed into a tree near a residential area in Kg Titingan, which is located on the outskirts,' he added. Nazri said the suspect acted aggressively and again tried to flee, but was apprehended at the scene. An inspection found van loaded with black plastic packages containing smuggled cigarettes from various brands. An investigation was launched under the Customs Act 1967 concerning the act of protecting, storing, and concealing goods without customs duty or legal authorization. 'PPM Region 4 remains committed to combating smuggling activities and welcomes information from the public to ensure the safety and well-being of the country,' he said. Home minister: Police to exhume Zara Qairina's body for post-mortem after AGC directive
MACHANG, Aug 9 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will exhume the body of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir as soon as possible to complete the investigation into her death. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this followed instructions issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday for the exhumation of the girl's body to allow a post-mortem procedure to be carried out. 'The police will implement the decision. I was briefed by the Inspector-General of Police (Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail) this morning that the police will immediately carry out the procedure. 'Of course, the focus by the police is to update the investigation, collect all evidence and in carrying out this task, the police will not compromise on the principle of justice because we need to be fair to everyone involved, including the family of the late Zara and the school,' he said here today. He was met by reporters after the opening of the 'Ijtimak Madani Ulama dan Guru Pondok Kelantan 2025' by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Machang campus here. Saifuddin Nasution assured that the police will keep the public informed with the latest updates on the case from time to time.
