Three Chinese men arrested in Japan after rustling luggage reveals thousands of endangered hermit crabs
TOKYO, May 8 — Three Chinese men were arrested in Japan after their rustling suitcases alerted hotel staff to the thousands of protected hermit crabs inside, police said Thursday.
A hotel worker in Amami City, on one of the archipelago's southwestern subtropical islands, reported the suspected crime to environmental authorities on Tuesday.
The guests 'had asked the hotel to watch their suitcases, and the suitcases made a rustling noise', a police official told AFP.
When two of the three guests returned to the hotel, police asked them to reveal the contents of their luggage.
Inside the three suitcases police found around 95 kilogrammes (210 pounds) of spiral-shelled, protected hermit crabs.
These hermit crabs are from a group of species designated as 'national natural monuments' because of their cultural and scientific value.
The third man was found to have 65 kilogrammes of the hermit crabs in another set of three suitcases, police said.
There were 'thousands' of hermit crabs in their possession, the police spokesman added. Local media reported each of the hermit crabs can command up to 20,000 yen (RM590).
The three men were arrested on Wednesday.
'Our investigation is ongoing to identify whether they had (the hermit crabs) to sell them or to keep them as pets or to eat them,' he said.

(AP pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has secured the forfeiture of US$954,299.58 (RM4.5 million) from a Swiss bank account linked to the misappropriation of 1MDB funds. MACC said the Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed the forfeiture today after the deputy public prosecutor informed the court that there were no objections or claims made by any party during the proceedings. 'Justice K Muniandy granted the application to forfeit the funds held in a BSI Bank account in Switzerland under the name of Derivale Ltd, whose beneficiary is Azlin Alias,' it said in a statement. The forfeiture was carried out under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. According to MACC, this marks the first successful forfeiture of overseas assets without involving prosecution. It said the funds will now be transferred to the government as part of ongoing recovery efforts related to the 1MDB scandal. Last month, MACC chief Azam Baki said repatriating assets linked to 1MDB remained a difficult process as many of these stolen assets were located overseas. He said the complex nature of the case made international cooperation crucial, especially when it came to tracing and retrieving funds that were siphoned into multiple countries. Azam also said Malaysia lost an estimated RM277 billion to corruption between 2018 and 2023 – an average of RM55 billion a year – describing the amount as 'very alarming'.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The law firm representing Yusoff Rawther said today it is unreasonable to tell the public not to comment on the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision to acquit the former research assistant of drug trafficking and weapons-related charges. The Law Practice of Rafique said the statement by the Attorney-General's Chambers on the matter was inappropriate because the public, as taxpayers, has every right to pursue justice and truth. In a statement, the law firm also reminded the AGC that the public has the right to question the integrity of institutions involved in the legal and enforcement systems. 'We urge the AGC to continue being a protector of the people in upholding the rule of law and justice, without shielding anyone,' it said. 'Freedom of speech is a fundamental right of the people, and no one should become an agent that obstructs that right.' Earlier today, the AGC urged the public to refrain from making speculative or defamatory statements following the High Court's decision to acquit Yusoff. Yusoff was acquitted of charges related to drug trafficking and the possession of two fake pistols yesterday. Justice Jamil Hussin said the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case on both charges and was unable to prove all elements of the alleged offences with credible evidence. Yusoff's defence was that the drugs and pistols had been planted to frame him. He was held in remand at the Sungai Buloh prison for nine months as bail is not allowed for those charged with drug trafficking.

Cops hand over probe into actor's alleged assault of teen fan to prosecutors
SHAH ALAM, June 13 — The investigation paper (IP) involving a popular male actor and singer, accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl, has been submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's (DPP) Office for further action. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that the police are now awaiting a response from the DPP, before proceeding with further legal action. 'The investigation paper has been completed and submitted. We are now awaiting further instructions for the case, which is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792),' he said, at a press conference, here, today. Commenting further, Hussein said that investigations found that the victim and the suspect had met on two occasions prior to the incident, during celebrity events or concerts. 'We believe that the victim is indeed a fan of the actor. Their acquaintance began through encounters at event venues.' Hussein added that the incident came to light after the victim's mother lodged a police report. On June 4, the media reported that a popular actor and singer was arrested by police for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl, at a hotel in Selangor. — Bernama
