Mexico's Marina de Taviria, Oscar-nominated as supporting actress for her performance as the mother in Alfonso Cuarón's 'Roma' is attached to star in Brenda Navarro's 'House Eight' ('Casa 8'), one of the hottest packages at this week's Bogotá Audiovisual Market (BAM).

Currently in development and reaching out for international production partners, 'House Eight' is set up at high-flying Mexican production outfit Mandarina Cine, this year a global SXSW Audience Award winner for 'Corina,' now nominated for eight Mexican Academy Ariel Awards.
Mandarina also produced 'The Devil Smokes (and Saves the Burnt Matches in the Same Box),' the first best film winner at the inaugural Berlinale Perspectives section, reserved for first-time movies.
'The Devil Smokes' was described by Variety as 'a childhood survival story as strange and beguiling as its title. Likewise, 'House Eight' weighs in as one of the most distinctive offerings at BAM. A psychological thriller, with fantasy or even metaphysical elements, it follows a group of terminally ill women who shelter in a clandestine house to die with dignity. They come to be faced by a disturbing reality: The Witch, their spiritual and scientific leader, has developed an experimental method that revives the dead, according to the synopsis.
When one of the dead unexpectedly revives, the community fractures, and the Witches assistant becomes their greatest enemy, unleashing an ethical and emotional struggle were accepting death or defying it will change their lives forever.
'Brenda Navarro is an indispensable voice in our literature, creator of heart-rending worlds which are personally and socially touching. I would be delighted to collaborate in this project,' said de Tavira.
'I'm utterly moved by the possibility of being part of a group of women who tell a courageous, risky, painful and honest story, all guided by one of the most exciting young voices in our country's current literature, Brenda Navarro. 'May the story be told!'
'As a narrator, Brenda Navarro has the sensibility and social conscience to allow her to write from pain, not to reproduce but dismantle it. Her arrival on the film and TV scene, with images as potent as her writing, is a natural step. At Mandarina we are honoured and happy to make this journey with her,' said Carlos Hernández Vázquez, co-founder of Mandarina Cine with Gabriel Gavica in 2018.
Bravo added that she and Hernández are looking for international alliances to produce 'House Eight,' 'a story about women with a team made up primarily of women in which the main theme is the fear to live when faced by such an unjust world, full of women which are battling to exercise a control over their decisions. 'House Eight' is a horror drama where the desire to die with dignity is punished by eternal life.'
'House Eight' won first prize in the 2024 Episode 0 section at Mexico's Guadalajara Film Festival.
Navarro was part of the 'Cometierra' series writers room. 'Empty Houses,' her first novel, was published in 10 languages. The big screen adaptation of 'Ceniza en la boca' is now in post-production, directed by Diego Luna.
Co-produced by Mandarina Cine and a first Turkey-Mexico co-production, Seyfettin Tokmak's 'Empire of the Rabbits' scooped best director in Taipei and and screenplay at Tallinn Black Nights Festival.
Marina de Tavira is represented by the Talent on the Road agency, Verónica Bravo by Lumina Management.

Sterling K. Brown Reflects on Getting to Help Bring ‘Paradise' and ‘Washington Black' to Life

Sterling K. Brown is using his prolific career to help support new TV shows — including Paradise and Washington Black. "Everything happens in divine timing — exactly when it's supposed to. It may not be exactly what you are hoping for but it's always exactly what it's supposed to be," Brown, 49, noted during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly about Washington Black's release on Hulu. Brown, who plays Medwin, said he was "tremendously proud" of his latest role. "It's a beautiful story. It is told beautifully and shot beautifully. We got a chance to shoot in Iceland and in Nova Scotia and in Mexico. We got a chance to take this very melanated cast across the globe," he gushed. "And to see something with that level of expanse that has us centered [in it] gives me a tremendous amount of pride." What to Know About Sterling K. Brown's 'Washington Black': From Cast Details to Book Connections While reflecting on his recent projects, Brown acknowledged his work behind and in front of the camera, adding, "By virtue of me being an executive producer, if that helped get the story get told then I hope to help get more stories like that told." Brown has remained booked and busy since wrapping up his time on NBC's This Is Us. His most recent show, Washington Black, offered Brown a chance to partner with Selwyn Seyfu Hinds to produce a TV adaptation of Esi Edugyan's novel of the same name. The 2019 book follows George Washington Black (Eddie Karanja and Ernest Kingsley Jr.) through past and present timelines as he is raised under the shadow of slavery before catching the attention of the sugar plantation owner's brother. A young Washington is recruited to help the owner's brother, leading to an adventure around the world. Washington in present day goes by Wash and lives in Nova Scotia, where he is taken under the wing of town leader Medwin Harris (Brown). "Medwin is a small mention in the book. We definitely extrapolate it just so I could have something to do," Brown told Us of his character. "But it's interesting to see the difference in mentorship that Wash has throughout his life and him moving to place of, 'Oh, I don't need a mentor. Anything that I thought that I needed from someone else I actually have with myself.' Then it moves from mentorship to partnership. So I like to see how Medwin functions in that way and his ultimate evolution of Wash." While Washington Black was just released on Wednesday, July 23, it was in the works for some time. It was even filmed before Brown's other hit Hulu series Paradise, which reunited him with This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman. The political thriller, which premiered in January, received critical acclaim and was renewed one month later. Washington Black gave Brown a chance to elevate the stories he wants to see released. It also provided the opportunity for him to mentor several of the show's stars, who couldn't help but sing Brown's praises. Summer TV Preview 2025: Inside Must-Watch New and Returning Shows From 'The Bear' to 'Love Island USA' "First of all, I feel like I kind of dragged Sterling into being a mentor. I just kind of asked him so many questions, like, 'Hey man, how are you doing? It's 1:00 a.m. but I need your help,'" Kingsley Jr., who plays adult Wash, joked to Us. "It was natural, to be honest. It was naturally built." Kingsley Jr. pointed out how Brown "operates with vulnerability in such a powerful way," adding, "Sterling operates with a sense of power, and he encourages and incites it in you. It is this sense of, if you open up to that [kind of vulnerability yourself] then it will be held and cared for and loved. I feel like he spread that out across multiple cast members and across the crew." He continued: "Just his presence was a mentorship and getting to see him every day. It was a blessing and a gift to have him on set. Also, just to have him in my life. Now he can't get rid of me." Brown, meanwhile, attempted to play off the praise, quipping, "I paid them all. That's really the bottom line of the whole thing. I walked their dogs when they needed me to. I do special favors so they say nice things about him." Washington Black is currently streaming on Hulu. Trailer For AZTEC BATMAN: CLASH OF EMPIRES Dives into Mythology, Culture, and Justice — GeekTyrant

San Diego Comic-Con brought plenty of surprises this year, but one reveal in particular stood out, a very cool and interesting reimagining of the Dark Knight like we've never seen before. HBO Max has dropped the trailer for its upcoming animated feature Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires , and it's an absolute game-changer for DC fans. This Batman story comes with a cultural twist and it's a full-on reinvention that digs deep into Aztec mythology and history while keeping the core of what makes Batman, well, Batman. The film's official synopsis from HBO Max Latin America lays out the premise: 'A young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl, whose father, village leader Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Coatl flees to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of looming danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma's temple, and avenge his father's death.' Batman as a warrior of the Aztec empire, fighting Spanish Conquistadors while drawing power and inspiration from the bat god Tzinacan, that's so cool! It's an awesome and visually rich setting that gives the Dark Knight an entirely new mythology to explore. This project was originally announced in 2022 to celebrate Batman's 83rd anniversary, Aztec Batman is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd, Mexico's Ánima, and Chatrone, the company behind The Book of Life . The movie was directed by Juan Meza-León, best known for his work on the Harley Quinn Animated Series , who serves as both co-writer and director. Meza-León and his team have taken inspiration from multiple sources, blending historical authenticity with the iconic traits that make Batman so badass. One of the most intriguing aspects of this film is how it balances Batman's familiar origin themes such as tragedy, vengeance, justice with the sociopolitical and spiritual context of the Aztec empire. Speaking to Anime News Network, Meza-León explained: 'He goes through tragedy at the hands of the conquistadors. So that's where you get the loss of the parents and also the loss of his village. That motivates him and pushes him into a journey that, unbeknownst to him, is being led by the deities that guide him into becoming the bat warrior.' He also assured fans that while the characters will be reimagined, their essence will remain intact: 'We try to be as faithful as we can to the essence of the characters, whether it's Batman, Joker, or Two-Face. They're completely new characters with different origins, but you can still see the spirit of their comic counterparts.' This means we'll likely see Aztec-inspired versions of Batman's greatest foes, each reinterpreted through the lens of ancient Mesoamerican culture. The team behind the film took care to represent Aztec architecture, weapons, and societal structures, all while weaving in mythological elements. Producer Aztec Batman is steeped in historical and cultural authenticity. The team took care to represent Aztec architecture, weapons, and societal structures, all while weaving in mythological elements. Producer García de Letona shared that the movie was inspired by classic Batman works as well: 'The movie was inspired by Batman: The Animated Series, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and a bunch of comic books.' This isn't the first time Batman has been reimagined in a different cultural context, 2018's Batman Ninja threw the Caped Crusader into a wild anime-inspired setting, and its upcoming sequel Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League will do the same. But Aztec Batman is different. It's not just using aesthetics, it's anchoring the story in real history and mythology, blending the legendary hero with a powerful cultural narrative about colonialism, resistance, and identity. And honestly? That makes it one of the most exciting Batman projects in years. Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires will hit digital platforms on September 19.
