TV tonight: the highly addictive Sex and the City spin-off returns

The Guardian5 days ago

9pm, Sky ComedyFor all its flaws (desperate attempts to be 'woke', the annihilation of Miranda's character), Sex and the City fans can't help tuning in to this spin-off – and its third season may finally be getting into its Manolo-heeled stride. This might be hard to believe, what with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan (John Corbett) resolute on their nonsensical 'let's wait five years to be together' pact. But don't worry, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) are rolling their eyes with us. Will they make her see sense? Anyway, there's still plenty of sex, outfits that turn the streets of NYC into a catwalk, the husky tones of Seema (Sarita Choudhury) and even a naughty night with a nun. Hollie Richardson
9.30pm, BBC OneThe start of a second season for this watchable if slightly pedestrian 90s-set sitcom about the complicated life and business affairs of Conleth Hill's businessman Martin Parker. His lover, Kath, and his wife, Diane, have teamed up to run the electronics business, leaving him languishing in poverty. He wangles a job as a care worker – but it's not as easy as he thought it looked. Phil Harrison
8.30pm, BBC One
Hammond rides off into the sunset with Luke Evans, literally, as they start their weekend together horse-riding. The Welsh actor and singer then takes her to his parents' home, where he grew up as a Jehovah's Witness but secretly gay. Hammond is masterly at getting into deep and meaningfuls – even as she desperately tries to concentrate on driving. HR
9pm, ITV1The second leg of Lumley's 'fabulous journey' down the Danube takes her to Slovakia, where in the capital, Bratislava, she explores curious architecture such as the Slovak Radio Building, the 'UFO bridge' and Petržalka – the biggest prefab housing estate in Europe. She later heads to Hungary to hang out with cowboys. HR
10pm, Sky MaxIn a shocking twist, the finale of the millennial-v-boomer comedy finds Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) working on live shows in Asia. Things, obviously, aren't going so well – and with Deborah now contractually not allowed to do comedy in the US, what unexpected news article could possibly compel her to drag Ava back there? It promises a fifth and potentially final series. HR
10pm, Channel 4'There's definitely too many people in that room for me,' declares Jonny, thoroughly spooked by the prospect of an orgy alongside partner Sarah. As the non-monogamous (and surprisingly unerotic) reality show continues, will whittling down the group to a more manageable fivesome ease his fears? Hannah J Davies
Bono: Stories of Surrender (Andrew Dominik, 2025), Apple TV+The U2 frontman's one-man show, based on his memoir, is now a film courtesy of Andrew Dominik – who has form in the field of rock star confessionals, notably about Nick Cave. It is an intimate, engrossing piece, shot in crisp black-and-white with sparse lighting. Bono is a confident raconteur, as he relays anecdotes from his life – meeting his future wife and starting the band in the same week; Live Aid and his political campaigning; chatting in the pub with his dad – candidly and self-deprecatingly, while excerpts from U2's songs act as commentary on his experiences. Simon Wardell

Astros' Lance McCullers Jr. beats Pirates for first win since '22

June 4 - Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker homered as Lance McCullers Jr. outdueled Paul Skenes, helping the Houston Astros defeat the host Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Tuesday night. McCullers (1-1) pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven on 96 pitches. He registered his first victory since returning last month from a two-year injury absence following flexor tendon surgery. He most recently won a game on Sept. 21, 2022. The Astros prevailed for the third time in their past four games while the Pirates lost for the third time in four contests. Houston posted its second consecutive shutout and sixth of the season while Pittsburgh was blanked for the 10th time. Josh Hader worked a perfect ninth and converted his 16th save in 16 opportunities this season. After receiving plenty of run support in his most recent start -- a 10-1 Pirates win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 28 -- Skenes (4-6) didn't get any on Tuesday. The Pirates wasted a quality outing in which he allowed one run on three hits and one walk over eight innings. Skenes struck out eight on 99 pitches but yielded a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh to Walker, who belted his eighth of the season over the left field wall. Houston added two more runs in the top of the ninth when Paredes hit his 12th home run 403 feet and past the left field wall off Pirates reliever Dennis Santana. Pittsburgh tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth when Isiah Kiner-Falefa led off with a single. After Oneil Cruz reached on a fielder's-choice grounder, Cruz appeared to steal second safely, but he overran the bag and was tagged out by second baseman Jose Altuve. Kiner-Falefa collected two of Pittsburgh's four hits. Before ethe game, the Pirates reinstated second baseman Nick Gonzales (ankle) from the 60-day injured list. Gonzales started and went 1-for-3, playing for the first time since breaking his ankle in the season opener. Pittsburgh also recalled right-handed reliever Kyle Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis and designated utilityman Nick Solak for assignment. --Field Level Media

US Navy to rename USNS Harvey Milk, named after gay rights leader

The US Navy plans to rename the USNS Harvey Milk, a fleet oiler named after the slain gay rights leader and Navy veteran, and is mulling renaming other ships named after civil rights changes were outlined in documents obtained by BBC's US partner CBS News that show a proposed timeline for when the change would be shared with the comes during Pride Month in June, an annual commemoration of the LGBTQ community that coincides with the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in directive also comes amid a broader movement by the Trump administration to curb programmes that promote diversity and inclusion across federal departments. Sean Parnell, a spokesperson for the Pentagon, told CBS on Tuesday that the renaming of the USNS Harvey Milk is to realign the US military with the Trump administration's goal of "re-establishing the warrior culture" in the Armed memo calls for Navy Secretary John Phelan to select a new name for the fleet oiler. This directive banned resources and manpower from being used on events like Pride Month, Black History Month and Women's History Month, citing concerns that they would undermine unity in the President Donald Trump also issued executive orders earlier this year that banned diversity, equity and inclusion in the government, and that made it official US policy to recognise two sexes, male and female - a move that has been criticised by LGBTQ rights activists for targeting non-binary and transgender move to rename the Harvey Milk and other ships has been criticised by prominent Democrats, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
