Egypt car market reverses course as prices plunge, supply rebounds: Experts - Markets & Companies

After years of soaring prices, shortages, and market distortions, Egypt's automotive sector is witnessing a dramatic shift, with car prices falling across key segments. The notorious 'overprice' premiums have nearly vanished, and industry players are betting big on local manufacturing. Experts say the trend is not a passing phase but the start of a structural realignment that could reshape the market through 2026. For Egyptian consumers long burdened by inflated vehicle prices and limited options, the tide appears to be turning. According to leading industry figures, car prices in Egypt have dropped significantly since early 2025, with expectations of continued declines driven by currency stabilization, increased imports, stronger domestic production, and strategic policy interventions. 'Between 15 to 18 brands have lowered their prices, some by as much as 20 percent. This includes major players like Citroën, which slashed prices by over 10 percent, and SsangYong, which cut prices by nearly 23 percent,' Osama Abu El-Magd, head of the Egyptian Automotive Dealers Association, told Ahram Online. This downward trajectory coincides with a surge in investment from automotive companies. Five major manufacturers have announced plans to invest more than $600 million over the next year, aiming to triple domestic production capacity from 95,000 to around 260,000 vehicles annually. These expansions are expected to reduce reliance on imports and increase market competitiveness. Currency stability rebuilds confidence The easing of foreign currency restrictions and the stabilization of the Egyptian pound were pivotal in restoring market dynamics. 'The resumption of letters of credit and access to hard currency enabled importers to restock adequately,' said Amr Soliman, a member of the Automotive Committee at the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. 'That was the turning point. We've since seen five new models launched, and with Nasr Automotive's plant coming online soon, supply is poised to grow further,' he added. Weakened demand drives price cuts While supply factors have played a significant role, a drop in consumer demand due to inflationary pressure also helped push prices downward. 'In the second quarter of 2025, demand softened considerably. This forced distributors to offer more competitive pricing to clear inventory, especially as new brands entered the market, intensifying competition,' Soliman said. Meanwhile, the normalization of maritime logistics through the Red Sea and falling shipping costs have eased price pressures. Previously, high transport costs were a major driver of car price inflation. Now, supply chains have recovered significantly, contributing to cost reductions. Additionally, domestic production has become a game-changer. Five new vehicle assembly plants were launched in the past seven months, according to Abu El-Magd, particularly impacting vehicles priced under EGP 1.5 million. 'This created a new layer of price competition, leading to price drops of up to 20 percent on some models. We're also seeing a significant increase in the availability of affordable vehicles, which has reshaped market expectations,' he explained. However, higher-end segments, those priced above EGP 1.5 million, remain less affected due to limited competition. The slump in new car prices has had a stark effect on used vehicles, which have seen a value decline of over 20 percent. 'When a brand-new 2025 model sells for EGP 720,000, and a 2016 used model is EGP 700,000, the choice is obvious. This dynamic has weakened demand for used cars considerably,' Abu El-Magd told Ahram Online. Government strategy: From burden to export At the heart of the transformation is Egypt's national strategy to localize the auto industry. Backed by direct presidential support, the plan aims to reduce the sector's drag on the trade balance and instead turn it into a net exporter of vehicles and components. The strategy includes production incentives starting from 10,000 vehicles annually, direct subsidies of up to EGP 50,000 per car, depending on price tier, support for feeder industries, and regulatory reforms to remove investment barriers. Still, structural hurdles persist, including customs duties on essential components, multi-stage value-added tax (VAT) collection, which burdens liquidity, and development fees of up to 8.5 percent on vehicles over 2,000cc. 'To make local manufacturing truly competitive, these burdens must be eased. Tying incentives to export performance would also raise the global profile of Egyptian-made vehicles,' Soliman stated. Outlook: Sustained price decline through 2026 Both Soliman and Abu El-Magd agree that current trends are not short-lived. With 10 new factories expected to be operational by the end of the year and local production capacity expanding, car prices are expected to continue their decline into 2026. 'We are entering a new era in Egypt's automotive market, defined by local manufacturing and fair competition. This is good news not only for consumers but for the broader economy,' said Abu El-Magd. 'Exchange rate stability, increased supply, stronger competition, and state support have eliminated overpricing and driven down costs. The key to sustaining this progress lies in deepening local industry incentives and removing remaining barriers to expansion,' Soliman concluded. Silver Extends Gains, Supported by Supply Deficits and Rising Industrial Demand

Waleed Farouk Silver prices in local markets recorded significant gains last week, amid global volatility after spot prices touched their highest levels in more than 14 years before retreating due to signs of easing trade tensions. In Egypt, 800-grade silver opened trading at EGP 52 per gram, climbed to EGP 54, and closed the week at EGP 53. The price for 999-grade silver reached EGP 66, while 925-grade silver stood at EGP 61, and a silver pound coin (925) was priced at approximately EGP 488. Globally, spot silver started the week at $38.11 per ounce, peaked at $39.91—the highest since 2011—before closing at $38. Silver came close to breaching the $40-per-ounce threshold, but a sudden U.S. announcement regarding an imminent trade deal with the European Union triggered a rapid pullback. Domestic Market Dynamics Local gold markets experienced a modest recovery in sales during Egypt's high school exam results season, as many families purchased silver coins and bars as gifts. Additionally, individual investors increasingly turned to silver as an alternative investment to gold, which has reached record price levels. Trade Developments and Monetary Policy Impact The silver rally coincides with an approaching trade deadline on August 1, as several nations—including Mexico, Canada, and the EU—work to finalize agreements aimed at mitigating tariff impacts, particularly on major silver-producing countries. Such deals could stabilize supply chains and prevent shortages that might otherwise push prices sharply higher. Analysts suggest that once these agreements are finalized, the U.S. Federal Reserve may move toward interest rate cuts. This could place additional pressure on the U.S. dollar, which has already lost about 11% of its value since the start of the year. Should the Dollar Index fall to 92—its level during former President Donald Trump's term, representing another 5% decline—it could become a strong catalyst for precious metals, with projections pointing to silver potentially reaching $50 per ounce and gold $4,000 per ounce within the next 12 months. Market Trends and Structural Drivers Silver prices have risen 29% in Egypt since the beginning of 2025, adding EGP 12 to the price of 800-grade silver. On the global stage, silver has surged by 31%, from $29 to $38 per ounce, outperforming most other metals during the same period. This growth is attributed to several factors, including expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged in its upcoming meeting, growing concerns over a global economic slowdown, persistent supply chain disruptions, and increasing industrial demand—particularly from the solar energy and technology sectors. Gold-Silver Ratio and Valuation Perspective The gold-to-silver ratio has fallen to 86, down from over 100 in April, while its historical average ranges between 50 and 60. This decline suggests that silver remains undervalued relative to gold. Analysts note that if the ratio were to revert to its historical mean without a significant change in gold prices, silver could exceed $63 per ounce—a potential 65% gain from current levels. Future Outlook and Historical Context Adjusted for inflation, historical data shows that silver's peak price in 1980 would equal about $197 per ounce today, while the 2011 rally corresponds to roughly $71. This indicates that current levels around $38–$39 remain relatively low, leaving room for further appreciation if supportive market conditions persist. Silver is regaining its role as a trusted safe-haven asset amid an environment marked by heightened geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures, and financial market volatility. Historically, like gold, silver has served as a store of value during crises but offers the additional advantages of greater accessibility and affordability for retail investors. With deepening supply deficits and rising industrial and investment demand, the silver market appears firmly positioned in a bullish phase, offering attractive opportunities for those seeking tangible assets that combine growth potential with defensive characteristics. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

Egypt's Telecom Regulator: 650,000 Mobile Phones Entered Duty-Free with Passengers in 2025

Taarek Refaat Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) confirmed on Sunday that over 650,000 mobile phones have entered the country duty-free alongside travelers since the beginning of the year, under the country's mobile device governance system. The authority clarified that the exemption, allowing one mobile device per traveler to enter the country without customs duties, remains in effect as part of the ongoing pilot phase of a broader telecommunications oversight framework. In an official statement, the NTRA denied social media rumors claiming that previously exempted phones would be retroactively taxed or disabled. 'These claims are unfounded,' the statement read. However, the regulator acknowledged detecting abuse of the exemption policy, revealing that approximately 60,000 devices have had their mobile network access suspended pending further investigation. Through a systematic review of the exemption program, the NTRA uncovered 13,000 devices that had illegally benefited from the duty-free rule in violation of regulatory guidelines. These devices remain blocked as of now. Conversely, around 47,000 suspended phones were found to be legitimately exempt and have since been reactivated after verification procedures. Egypt introduced the exemption policy as part of a national framework to regulate and monitor mobile device imports, reduce smuggling, and ensure fair taxation. The initiative is also designed to curb the proliferation of unregistered devices on local telecom networks. The NTRA emphasized its commitment to periodic audits and enforcement, warning against fraudulent attempts to exploit the system. Further technological upgrades and automated checks are expected as the program moves toward full implementation.
