ICC slaps five-year ban on ex-cricketer for match fixing
Saliya Saman
has been banned from all cricket for five years after an ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code.
Saman was among eight individuals charged in September 2023 for violating the Code. His ban is backdated to 13 September 2023, the date he was provisionally suspended, meaning he has already served two years of his sentence.

The 39-year-old, who played 101 first-class matches and 77 List A games, faced charges relating to the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League and attempts to corrupt matches in that tournament. The incidents were disrupted by the ICC and the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (DACO) for the purposes of the ECB's Code for the event.
Saman was found guilty on three counts — Articles 2.1.1, 2.1.3 and 2.1.4.
Article 2.1.1 states: "Being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021."
As per Article 2.1.3, Saman offered "a Reward to another Participant in exchange for that player engaging in Corrupt Conduct under the Code."
Article 2.1.4 states: "Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1."

Fishermen blame Centre; to go ahead with rail blockade agitation in Ramanathapuram district
Blaming the Union government squarely for the arrests and impounding of trawlers by Sri Lankan Navy, the Tamil Nadu fishermen on Saturday said that they would intensify their agitations. The fishermen have not been venturing into the sea for the last week due to the 'continued' arrests under charges of poaching. On Independence Day, they observed a token fast in Thangachimadam with families and children. On Saturday, the Ramanathapuram district administration had invited the striking fishers for a talk. However, it failed, they claimed. Speaking to media persons, fishermen leaders Emerit, Jesu Raj and among others said that the Union government had not taken any tangible steps to solve the issue with Sri Lankan government over the last five years or a decade. As a result, hundreds of fishermen were arrested and trawlers impounded. Under such circumstances, they told the officials that without any assurance from the governments, they would not withdraw the stir. In the last two months alone, 64 fishermen were arrested. On top of it, the fishermen were also jailed for six months to two years depending on the charges of repeating the offence. Hence, they announced to go ahead with the rail blockade stir on August 19.

SLR looted from cops found in Saranda forest
1 2 Jamshedpur: A cache of arms and explosives, including SLRs looted from police personnel, were found by the 209 Battalion of the CRPF and the district police during an anti-Maoist operation in Saranda forest area of West Singhbhum, police said. DIG (Kolhan) Anuranjan Kispotta on Friday said the arms and ammunition were recovered from the Dugunia-Posiata-Tumbagada stretch of the forest under Goilkera police station limits. The cache includes four self loading rifles (SLRs), nine SLR magazines, 527 live cartridges, nine empty shells, one light machine gun magazine and three detonators. Besides Naxalite literature, uniforms and items of personal use were found, he said. "Cordon-and-search operations have been intensified in the area after Maoist area commander Arun alias Nilesh Makdam was gunned down on August 13," he added. "Operations have been intensified and it is only a matter of time before the Maoists are eliminated," SP Rakesh Ranjan said. Vivek Agnihotri alleges trailer launch of ‘The Bengal Files' ‘stopped' by Kolkata Police
The Kolkata Police on Saturday (August 16, 2025) stopped the trailer launch of 'The Bengal Files', its director Vivek Agnihotri claimed. The trailer of the film was slated to be screened at a five-star hotel in the metropolis in the afternoon. Police personnel present at the venue refused to comment on the issue. Mr. Agnihotri, however, alleged that it was an attack on the democratic rights of people, as the censor board had cleared the film and 'the Calcutta High Court stayed a ban on it'. The screening of the trailer was first stopped by a representative of the hotel around 1 p.m., who said that permission had been granted for only a press conference, he said. As the trailer was shown again a little later, 'suddenly five-six Kolkata Police officers entered the banquet hall where the programme was being held and stopped the screening midway,' the director claimed. The filmmaker was also seen engaged in a heated argument with the police personnel and a hotel staff. Mr. Agnihotri alleged that the screening was stopped at the behest of the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and that her party leaders also threatened the hotel management to halt the trailer midway. Addressing reporters, Mr. Agnihotri asserted that 'The Bengal Files', 'which is based on facts and has passed the censor hurdle', is being prevented from screening by 'the person who is at the helm of the administration in Bengal'. Asked if he meant Ms. Banerjee, he said, "Yes, you are right." "There can be only one reason behind such a move, to ignore the conspiracy to divide Bengal again. I wish to believe this government is not anti-Hindu," Mr. Agnihotri said. 'The Bengal Files' delves into the communal violence in undivided Bengal during the 1940s. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on September 5. The producer of the film Abhisshek Agarwal later told PTI that "no force can stop us to release the film on September 5." "We are taking advice from legal experts. The trailer launch programme had no legal hurdles. We will move the court soon after today's development," he said.
