Earlier, a parish priest spoke of the utter sadness as medics battled to help those caught up in the crash.

Carndonagh parish priest Fr Con McLaughlin said he was not at the scene of the tragedy but rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry to provide comfort for those involved.
He revealed: "On hearing about the accident I went straight over to Altnagelvin Hospital and the scene (in accident and emergency) is something I will never forget.
'A SHOCK AND A DISBELIEF'
"In the community there is a shock and a disbelief. One can only imagine what the family are going through and I witnessed that pain in the hospital last night.
"The scene in the hospital was just so, so sad. You had doctors and nurses running around trying to do their best to help these poor helpless people. It is something I will never, ever forget.

"I just wanted to be a presence there for the family and I did not speak too much but I just wanted them to know that we are all there for them."
Fr McLaughlin said the people of Inishowen are once again suffering tragedy on their roads, an experience they are sadly too used to.
'PAIN NO STRANGER'
He added "Pain is no stranger to the people of Inishowen as there has been so, so many tragic deaths.
"I remember being present in Buncrana when there was a series of multiple deaths there between 2005 and 2008 and once again tragedy has struck our people and I'm quite sure it revives many painful memories for many people in Inishowen as indeed it does for me."

"We can visualise how they must feel at this time and how the wider community feels and how people have suffered tragedies in the past as there have been so many in Inishowen.
"I just can't find words to express how people will feel today and how I personally feel too having been involved in some of them in the past.
'PEOPLE WILL RALLY'

He said: "Our local community once again is raw with grief and our local community just feel devastated.
"Once again a local family have been challenged in having to face the loss of a loved one. It's terrible news here in North Inishowen."

Detailing conditions on the road yesterday Albert told RTE: "Conditions were, I would say, favourable for driving.
"However, our road at that particular time in to Carndonagh, in to the Mallin area it's a very busy road.
'BUSY, BUSY ROAD'
"Workers are returning after a hard days work, people are leaving the jobs in Letterkenny and Derry."
He elaborated: "It's a busy, busy road for a period there."

The tragedy comes after four people - three men and a woman - were hospitalised following a two-car crash outside Carndonagh on the same road in January.
The collision took place on Thursday, January 2 just before 7pm, close to Glentogher National School.
PREVIOUS TRAGEDY
Late last year, Donegal teen Tiernan Doherty-Kelly, 18 was killed when the car he was driving left the road near Buncrana on the Inishowen Peninsula at around 5am on the morning of Sunday, December 1.
He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene on the R244, known locally as the Mountain Road, at Ballinlough in Donegal.

North Korean man crosses heavily mined land border to South Korea
A NORTH KOREAN civilian voluntarily crossed the heavily mined land border between the two countries, aided by the South's military in a delicate 20-hour operation, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff have said. Tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled to South Korea since the peninsula was divided by war in the 1950s, with most going overland to neighbouring China first, then entering a third country such as Thailand before finally making it to the South. Defections across the land border that divides the peninsula are relatively rare, as the area is densely forested, heavily mined and monitored by soldiers on both sides. The North Korean man was first detected by a South Korean military surveillance device sometime between 3am and 4am Thursday (7pm and 8pm Irish time) near a shallow stream inside the DMZ, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The man stayed mostly still during the day and was sometimes hard to track due to the lush forest in the area, the JCS said, but South Korea's military approached him that night. 'The military identified the individual near the MDL, conducted tracking and surveillance,' the JCS said in a statement, referring to the Military Demarcation Line, the de facto border. The MDL runs through the middle of the Demilitarised Zone – the border area separating the two Koreas, which is one of the most heavily mined places on earth. Seoul's military then 'successfully carried out a standard guiding operation to secure custody,' the JCS said. When the man first noticed the approaching South Korean troops, he asked: 'Who are you?' according to the JCS. The soldiers responded: 'We are the South Korean military. We'll guide you to safety.' Upon hearing this, the man crossed the MDL and joined the troops, who then escorted him south out of the DMZ. Advertisement The operation took about 20 hours, according to Seoul. Bold, risky move The JCS said 'relevant authorities' will investigate the detailed circumstances of the incident. North Koreans are typically handed over to Seoul's intelligence agency for screening when they arrive in the South. Ahn Chan-il, a defector-turned-researcher who runs the World Institute for North Korea Studies, said the man is likely a farmer who had been working near the DMZ. If so, the man could have sensed the conciliatory mood between the two Koreas, Ahn said, as loudspeaker broadcasts from both sides – K-pop and international news from the South, and eerie, unsettling sounds from the North – have recently ceased. 'The lush summer vegetation within the DMZ likely offered the best cover for a high-risk escape,' he told AFP. 'Crossing the DMZ is an extremely dangerous act due to the presence of unmarked mines. It was a bold, risky move – and in this case, somehow, with a lot of luck, he succeeded.' The incident comes after a North Korean soldier defected to the South by crossing the MDL in August last year. Another North Korean also defected to the South across the de facto border in the Yellow Sea, arriving on Gyodong island off the peninsula's west coast near the border between the Koreas. The number of successful escapes by North Korean defectors dropped significantly from 2020 after the North sealed its borders – purportedly with shoot-on-sight orders along the land frontier with China – to prevent the spread of Covid-19. No unusual activities by the North Korean military have been detected, the JCS said today. South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung, who took office last month, has vowed a more dovish approach towards Pyongyang compared with his hawkish predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol. Man who led Garda Armed Support Unit on high speed chase to border avoids jail
Daniel O'Riordan contested the charges, testifying that he was not behind the wheel. A motorist who led Gardaí on a high speed chase from North Louth to the border during which he overtook other traffic at speed and ignored road signs has avoided a prison sentence. Last April, Daniel O'Riordan (37), Mullacrew, Louth Village, and originally from Bellurgan Point, Dundalk, was convicted of five counts of dangerous driving. He contested the charges, testifying that he was not behind the wheel, nor even in the area where the pursuit commenced. His girlfriend also gave evidence that he was with her the whole time. However, at the conclusion of evidence, Judge Nicola Andrews convicted the defendant of dangerous driving at Jenkinstown Post Office, Bellurgan, Ballymascanlon, Thistle Cross and Carrickaneena, before adjourning finalisation of the case for reports. There were 61 previous convictions, 27 under the Road Traffic Act, including for dangerous driving causing death for which a five-year sentence was imposed in February 2011. Judge Andrews sentenced him to 120 hours community service in lieu of four months imprisonment for dangerous driving at Jenkinstown Post Office along with a two-year driving disqualification. The other charges were taken into consideration. Legal aid was granted. The district court had heard that Gardaí began a surveillance operation at the post office at 8.30am on December 2, 2024, to apprehend Mr O'Riordan who had eight outstanding bench warrants. Gda Ian McDonnell said that he was in an unmarked car and at 4.27pm he spotted a silver Volkswagen Passat arrive. The defendant, whom he knew, was the sole occupant. A high speed pursuit subsequently began, along the main Dundalk Road, past the Ballymascanlon Hotel and through Thistle Cross. It ended when the Passat overtook on a bend under a railway bridge and crossed into Northern Ireland. Gda McDonnell said that he could see it driving dangerously along Edenappa Road. The PSNI was alerted. The pursuit was over 8.6km and lasted approximately eight minutes. On December 10 at 7.10am, the court heard, Mr O'Riordan was arrested with the assistance of the Garda Armed Support Unit at a residence in Mullacrew. Daniel O'Riordan testified that he didn't go to Bellurgan that day. His girlfriend drove him to a yard in Culloville, Co. Armagh to collect his wages. He continued that he was in Bellurgan the next day. He gets the 'Dole' in Jenkinstown Post Office. 'I wasn't driving. I wasn't even in Jenkinstown. It's not my car.
