Where does James Franklin rank in 2025 Big Ten coach rankings?

USA Today23-07-2025
The pressure is on like never before for Penn State head coach James Franklin heading into the 2025 season. With raised expectations for the Penn State program and strong preseason power rankings placed upon them, the Nittany Lions are roaring into the new college football season believed to be a strong Big Ten and national title contender. But where does Franklin rank among his peers in the conference?
CBS Sports released its annual Big Ten coach power rankings this week as the Big Ten football media days got underway this week. Not surprisingly, Franklin was among the top-ranked coaches in the Big Ten but did not land the top spot in this year's rankings. Franklin ranked third on the list from CBS Sports behind Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and Oregon head coach Dan Lanning. That would seem to be a fair assessment given Day is coming off his first national championship with the Buckeyes and Lanning guided Oregon to a Big Ten championship, at the expense of Franklin and Penn State, and a no. 1 seed going into the College Football Playoff last season.
Penn State's head coach moved up one spot in the Big Ten coach rankings from CBS Sports this year. Franklin swapped places on the ranking with USC head coach Lincoln Riley. The biggest move in the Big Ten coach rankings came from Indiana's Curt Cignetti, who jumped up to no. 6 from no. 14 following a brilliant debut season in Bloomington with the Hoosiers. Luke Fickell of Wisconsin tumbled from no. 5 in the Big Ten to no. 11 after a rough 2024 season. Michigan State's Jonathan Smith took a similar fall from no. 7 down to no. 13.
The spotlight is on Franklin this season, more so than ever before. The expectations are higher than ever. Will this be a year where Franklin breaks from the narrative of coming up short in the biggest of moments when the lights are the brightest? That remains to be seen, and soon enough we will begin witnessing the results for better or worse.

Dabo Swinney reveals Clemson running back Jarvis Green will miss most of the 2025 season

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided several health updates following Wednesday evening's practice at Jervey Meadows, including unfortunate news regarding redshirt sophomore running back Jarvis Green. Green is expected to miss most of the 2025 season after undergoing foot surgery. Swinney said it's the most serious injury the team has dealt with so far in fall camp. 'He's going to probably be out most of the year,' Swinney said. 'We had to do surgery on his foot, so he'll have a chance to come back at the end of the season. I hate that for him. I really do.' After redshirting in 2023, Green appeared in nine games last season, battling through multiple injuries. He finished the year with 53 rushing yards on nine carries and caught two passes out of the backfield. One of those receptions was a 25-yard touchdown in Clemson's College Football Playoff loss to Texas—a career first and a highlight moment on a big stage. Swinney said they may explore the possibility of a medical redshirt for Green, though nothing has been finalized. 'We'll just have to see how it all goes,' Swinney noted. In total, Green has played in 11 games over his Clemson career, logging 57 rushing yards and 35 receiving yards on 37 offensive snaps. Swinney also shared updates on several other Tigers. Defensive lineman Peter Woods missed Wednesday's practice due to illness, while safety Khalil Barnes is dealing with what Swinney called a 'short-term' injury and was spotted in a yellow jersey. Running back Jay Haynes continues progressing in his recovery from an ACL tear and is 'one step closer' to being cleared for practice. Meanwhile, cornerback Jeadyn Lukus is expected to return to practice sometime next week. Joel Klatt Gushes Over Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith

FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt praises Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, calling him possibly the best player he's seen since starting his college football coverage and predicting a legendary career ahead. FOX Sports analyst and commentator Joel Klatt has set sky-high expectations for Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Appearing on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Klatt couldn't say enough about the Buckeyes' standout, praising his talent and potential with glowing enthusiasm. 'The quarterback is not going to be asked to be Superman for Ohio State,' Klatt said. They should be able to run it well, their defense should be solid, and they've got, I think, the best wide receiver that I've seen in college football since I've been covering college football in Jeremiah Smith. He might be the best player I've seen since I started covering college football. 'There's only two players that I felt like, as their true freshman year, they should be on an NFL field: Adrian Peterson and Jeremiah Smith… Smith is ridiculous. I think Jeremiah Smith — I mean, this is probably too much hype — Jeremiah Smith, if he just keeps working hard and developing, I think he has a chance to be a top five receiver in the history of football.' Joel Klatt's praise for Jeremiah Smith is nothing short of extraordinary, but after the freshman season Smith just had, it might not be so far off the mark. In his first year with the Buckeyes, Smith rewrote the record books. He set a new FBS freshman receiving record with 1,315 yards, finishing the season with 76 receptions, 15 receiving touchdowns, and even added a rushing score. Despite a quiet game against Texas in the College Football Playoff semifinal, where he managed just one catch for three yards, Smith still left a major impact on the postseason. Across four playoff games, he totaled 19 catches for 381 yards and five touchdowns. He found the end zone twice in both the Rose Bowl against Oregon and in the matchup against Tennessee. His performance in the Rose Bowl was especially electric, recording 7 receptions for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns. For his outstanding debut season, Smith was named Big Ten Receiver of the Year and earned First-Team All-American honors. With a résumé like that already in hand, Klatt's high expectations suddenly seem very realistic. As of today, Jeremiah Smith holds the fourth-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy, behind only three quarterbacks: Texas' Arch Manning, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, and Clemson's Cade Klubnik. If Smith has already positioned himself among college football's elite after just one year, his rise is only beginning. All eyes will be on him when he returns to the field for his sophomore season opener as Ohio State faces Texas on August 30 at noon ET.
