Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has decided on nine of the starting XI for the Nations League semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday, but has not told all his players yet.
'If they've been paying attention in training, they know if they'll play,' Nagelsmann told a news conference at Munich's Allianz Arena on Tuesday.
Four names are certainly in the line-up. Captain Joshua Kimmich will be making his 100th cap, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is returning after a long injury break and midfielder Leon Goretzka will start.
'I've been paying attention,' the Bayern Munich man smirked at the news conference.
Florian Wirtz will also play despite a transfer saga involving current club Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool.
Nagelsmann said: 'I don't think that it is weighing on him. It's quite normal to have one or two thoughts.'
Forward Nick Woltemade, given a first call-up to the squad after a strong season for VfB Stuttgart, has made a good impression in training but Nagelsmann stopped short of confirming he will start.
Germany are back in a semi-final for the first time in eight years.
Their last title was at the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
'When you take part in a competition, my mindset is that you want to win it,' Goretzka said of the Nations League, Europe's secondary national competition.
Spain meet France in the other semi in Stuttgart on Thursday.
Sunday's final is in Munich.

Deschamps: Changes allow France to stake claim for World Cup spot

PA Media/DPA London France coach Didier Deschamps hopes the changes enforced on him for the Nations League third-place play-off against hosts Germany on Sunday will allow others a chance to stake their claim for the World Cup campaign. Already missing several regulars from the squad, Les Bleus saw Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Clement Lenglet all sustain injuries following Thursday night's thrilling 5-4 defeat by Spain in Stuttgart and released back to their clubs. Deschamps decided against calling up any late replacements, so the likes of Lyon winger Rayan Cherki - who impressed off the bench against Spain with a fine debut goal - could be handed another opportunity. 'As a result of having very little time, I will be forced to make a lot of changes,' Deschamps told a press conference ahead of Sunday's game, which will also be held at Stuttgart's MHPArena. 'There will be a chance to give game time to certain players. After all, it is an international encounter, against Germany and we will be doing our best to win. 'Once the players are on the pitch, they will all want to give their all to win. It will be an opportunity for me and my staff to take certain things into consideration.' Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is again expected to be deployed in the number nine role. With Paris St Germain frontman Dembele unavailable, the spotlight will again be on the 26-year-old to lead by example. 'Being a number nine at club level and international level isn't the same thing. I think it's a domain in which I have improved, because it's not necessarily a position I've played in before,' Mbappe said. 'Everything in football is a little unpredictable - I am trying to equip myself with the best tools possible to play in this position.' Mbappe feels France have enough strength in depth to test Germany, who were edged out by Portugal in their semi-final. 'This is a new side and there are a lot of players with less than 30 caps. It is a team that we are having to reconstruct,' he said. 'It is a team that has to create its own reputation. It can't ride on the reputation of teams that have gone before us, that is where the challenge is. 'There is a lot of talent in this team and we can achieve great things. 'We have to continue working as hard as possible to arrive at that World Cup with as much conviction as possible.'

Nations League final: Spain-Portugal more than Yamal battle, says Ronaldo

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo acknowledged that he was 'another generation' to Spain starlet Lamine Yamal but said Sunday's Nations League final was more than just a battle between the duo. The final in Munich has been framed as a showdown between veteran Ronaldo, 40, one of the game's biggest names, and 17-year-old Yamal, the most exciting young talent in world football. Ronaldo scored the winner to send Portugal past Germany into the final, and Yamal was named man-of-the-match after bagging a brace in Spain's wild 5-4 semifinal win over France. Ronaldo, however, said the focus on the two individuals was overblown, calling Spain 'maybe the best national team in the world'. 'There are different generations, one is coming in and another is exiting the stage. If you want to see me as another generation, then that's OK. 'When you talk about a clash between Cristiano and someone else, that's not how it works. The media always try to hype things up, which is a normal thing, but it's one team versus another team.' 'You've been talking about Lamine a lot and you're right to do so because he's very good,' Ronaldo told journalists, adding, 'but I'd like to talk about the team. 'They've got Nico Williams, great midfielders like Pedri and their coach [Luis] de la Fuente is very good, very strong, very disciplined.' Portugal last beat their Iberian neighbours in a competitive fixture 21 years ago, in a match which Ronaldo started. Like Yamal, Ronaldo burst onto the scene at a young age. Aged just 18, Ronaldo impressed so much for boyhood side Sporting in a 3-1 win over Manchester United in a friendly in Lisbon that the English club decided to buy him, bringing him to Old Trafford less than a week later. Like a young Ronaldo, Yamal has consistently impressed since bursting onto the scene, winning a league and cup double with Barcelona this season after lifting the Euro 2024 title in Germany last year. The Portuguese veteran asked the media to allow the teenager to grow and improve without pressure, reminding them the Spanish star 'with funny hair' was just 'three years older than my son'. 'The kid has been doing very well, but what I ask is for you to let him grow, not put him under pressure. For the good of football, we need to let him grow in his own way and enjoy the talent he has.' Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said Yamal was 'only 17, but very mature for his age. Well-prepared, intelligent – he lives life as if it's all normal, and that's what we want for him'. De la Fuente said the national side were 'trying to walk alongside [Yamal] in his education,' but added 'you'd be surprised, shocked, how calm he is. 'He's special. For some people, this would be a situation of maximum stress. But for him, he's relaxed, he's in control – he masters the situation.' The coach also took time to praise Ronaldo, calling him 'a legend in football and an example of the values I like: effort, work rate, sacrifice, getting better every day and never letting your guard down. 'Portugal are led by a footballer who will go down in history with an indelible legacy.' Both Spain and Portugal have already won the Nations League. Spain are the current champions from their win in 2023, while Portugal won the inaugural tournament back in 2019. Spain have won 16 and drawn two of their past 18 fixtures – and have not lost a competitive match since March 2023. Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal told reporters his side 'do not think we are better than anyone,' but 'we trust ourselves 100 percent and know we can compete in every game. 'We've shown that over the years. Our level is very high.'

Three New Zealand lawmakers suspended for performing Maori haka

WellingtoncTypeface:> Three lawmakers in New Zealand were formally suspended from parliament on Thursday for performing a traditional Maori dance, or haka. The three lawmakers, from the Te Pti Mori party, performed the haka in November, to oppose a bill that would have defined the principles of New Zealand's founding document. On Thursday, parliament voted to ban party leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi for 21 days. The previous longest ban from the country's parliament was three days. Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, New Zealand's youngest lawmaker at 22, was given a seven-day ban. All three will receive no pay during their suspensions. 'Parliament has sent a message to our mokopuna [future generations] that their Maori identity is a threat to New Zealand's democracy,' the party wrote on X. (DPA)
