Centennial Beach's attendance down from last year but golf courses remain steady

Despite the hot temperatures this summer, Naperville's Centennial Beach has seen a drop in total attendance numbers compared to last year due, in part, to closures caused by inclement weather and the drowning death of a patron. However, the number of people playing rounds at Springbrook and Naperbrook golf courses has remained on par with what the Naperville Park District saw in 2024. From May 26, which was Memorial Day, through Aug. 14, 94,077 people visited Centennial Beach, according to Sameera Luthman, park district director of marketing and communications. That's a decrease of about 15% compared to the same time frame in 2024, when they'd had 111,021 visitors. Total 2024 attendance at Centennial Beach was 11% above average last summer, attracting some 143,000 visitors between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. There were nine days this year on which Centennial Beach experienced low attendance, Luthman said. And the facility was forced to close for two days — July 11-12 — because of the weather and a third day, July 11, following the death of a 27-year-old man from Streamwood, which also resulted in the pool closing early on July 10. Unlike the beach, golf course attendance has been consistent with what the park district saw in 2024. Through Aug. 13, Springbrook Golf Course recorded 19,536 rounds played and Naperbrook Golf Course logged 18,111, data shows. The numbers at Springbrook and Naperbrook are consistent with numbers from 2024 for the same time period, with last year's tallies being 18,664 and 18,609 respectively, Luthman said. 'For golf, May to early June 2025 was cool with below normal temperatures followed by extreme heat in late June,' she said. 'July has seen higher than normal temperatures and humidity, which also brought several rounds of heavy rains.' Luthman noted that on days when it is particularly hot, golfers will play earlier in the morning or in the evening to avoid the heat. The colder weather earlier in the summer also impacted attendance at Centennial Beach, she said. As summer approaches its end, Naperville residents only have until Sept. 1 to enjoy the water at Centennial Beach. The facility will be closed Aug. 20-22 and Aug. 25-29, according to the park district. Because the number of weekends in the season are dwindling, weather could play a role in how many people head to Centennial and what their final attendance count tallies in at. The National Weather Service's forecast as of Monday was calling for sunny conditions at the end of the week and no rain predicted.

2025 MLB Odds: Fade The Dodgers, Back Padres To Win NL West

Major League Baseball 2025 MLB Odds: Fade The Dodgers, Back Padres To Win NL West Published Aug. 14, 2025 2:11 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Now is a great time to stop and appreciate how incredible these MLB division races have been. There is an old truism about how, historically, despite the length of the baseball season, about 75% of the teams who are in first place on Memorial Day end up maintaining their lead and going on to win their division. The point being, even though the season is six months long, the standings after two months are usually a very strong indicator of who is headed for October. This season is very different, though. All six divisions have seen some of the more extreme shakeups in the standings in recent memory and all within a fairly short period of time. Around Memorial Day, the AL East looked like a runaway, with the Yankees enjoying a comfortable seven-game cushion. Now that we're in mid-August, the Yankees sit in third place, six games behind the surprising first-place Blue Jays. On July 6, the Tigers led the AL Central by a staggering 13.5 games over the Twins, with the Guardians in fourth place and 15.5 games out. The Guardians have surged their way to second place, getting as close as four games behind the slumping Tigers in the loss column. Cleveland now trails Detroit by 6.5 games. The AL West looked like it was once again going to belong to the Astros, who led by seven games in mid-June. But as play started on Aug. 13, the Astros and Mariners were tied. ADVERTISEMENT The Milwaukee Brewers are on a 12-game winning streak as of Aug. 14. The National League has been just as wild. In the middle of June, the Mets led the NL East by 5.5 games, a lead that has turned into a five-game deficit to the Phillies in less than two months. A look at the standings in mid-June also reflected an NL Central that had the Cubs comfortably ahead of the Brewers, leading by 6.5 games. The Brewers, who seem to win every baseball game they play these days, have turned the tables and now enjoy a 7.5-game lead. That's a stunning 14-game swing. At least in the NL West, we can count on some stability, where the juggernaut Dodgers are a lock to win the division — right? Well, those Dodgers led by nine games on July 4 and now trail the new-look Padres by a full game. That's a 10-game swing in about five weeks. All six divisions have seen comfortable leads disappearing throughout the summer. But the NL West is the division, from a betting perspective, that I want to focus on, as these teams square off this weekend for a huge series in Los Angeles. Padres Best Bet to Win NL West When you look at the odds to win the division, the wrong team is favored. The Dodgers — despite trailing by a game and being ice-cold coming off of a second series sweep at the hands of the Angels — are -180 favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook. The Padres at +135 are underdogs. The bet here is the Padres to win the NL West. Can the Padres keep their slim lead over L.A. to finish the season? The Dodgers were projected by oddsmakers to win around 105 games before the season started and looked to be capable of living up to those expectations with their sizzling start. But L.A., surprisingly quiet at the trade deadline, has been a mediocre team for a long stretch. You can blame it on injuries, malaise after winning another World Series or whatever other reasons for the underachieving and underwhelming results. But the fact is, the Padres are simply a better baseball team right now. Two weeks ago, the day after the trade deadline, I wrote about the Padres' acquisitions and recommended them at 11-1 to win the National League. That number has been slashed to 5-1, as the Padres have gone 9-3 since the deadline and possess one of the best bullpens in recent memory now that All-Star Mason Miller has been added. New acquisitions Ryan O'Hearn and Ramon Laureano have provided depth to what was a struggling lineup, and the Padres look poised to break through and make their first World Series since 1998. The Dodgers are 12-21 since July 4 and are only favored to win the West because of past success. The L.A. team we expected isn't the one we're seeing right now. Taking the plus money odds on the hotter, more complete Padres to capture the division title is the bet to make. Winners, losers from Iowa NASCAR Cup race won by William Byron

NEWTON, Iowa — A look at the winners and losers from Sunday's Cup race at Iowa Speedway. WINNERS William Byron — After running out of fuel at Michigan and Indianapolis this summer and losing top-five finishes, Byron stretched his fuel — with the help of cautions — to win at Iowa Speedway. It's his first victory since the Daytona 500. Byron led a race-high 141 laps. He retook the points lead from teammate Chase Elliott. Byron leads Elliott by 18 points with three races left in the regular season. Chase Briscoe — His second-place finish is the third time in the last four races he's been a runner-up. Briscoe has placed first or second in four of the last seven races. Brad Keselowski — It wasn't the win he needed to make the playoffs, but his third-place finish was his seventh top-10 finish in the last 11 races. He had no top-10 results in the season's first 12 races. Sunday's result came after he started a season-best fifth. He scored a race-high 55 points after winning both stages and posting the fastest lap of the race. Dustin Long, Ryan Blaney — Last year's Iowa winner finished fourth and scored 49 points, second only to Brad Keselowski's total. Ryan Preece — He followed his fourth-place finish at Indianapolis by placing fifth at Iowa. He gained 19 points on Chris Buescher and trails his RFK Racing teammate by 23 points for the final playoff spot with three races left in the regular season. Bubba Wallace — With fresher tires, Wallace gained seven spots in the final 17 laps to place sixth. That gives him three consecutive top-10 finishes, which includes his Indianapolis win. This is his longest top-10 streak of the season. Nate Ryan, LOSERS Kyle Larson — He finished 28th — his worst finish on an oval since placing 37th in the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend. Larson expressed frustration on the team's radio with contract from fellow competitors in the race. He entered the race 15 points from the points leader. He's now 45 points back. Chris Buescher — His 22nd-place finish tied for his worst finish in the last 13 races. He continues to hold the final playoff spot but saw his advantage on RFK Racing teammate Ryan Preece shrink to 23 points. Noah Gragson — He finished 29th, marking the fifth consecutive race he's placed 29th or worse. Hear from William Byron, Ryan Preece, Chase Briscoe, Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace and Alex Bowman following the NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa. Chase Briscoe takes responsibility for an in-race incident with his Toyota teammates but is happy to come home second after recovering from a caution that "trapped" him deep in the field. Ryan Blaney was "surprised" to see the leaders fall off as much as they did in the closing laps at Iowa but wasn't able to leapfrog out of a fourth-place finish with family support at Iowa Speedway. Ryan Preece chats with Marty Snider and Dale Jarrett about his "eventful" day at Iowa Speedway, which secured back-to-back top five finishes, and knows it will take "perseverance" to insert his name into the playoffs.
