Ascend Airways Malaysia advances AOC process, eyes November 2025 cargo launch

The Sun04-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Ascend Airways Malaysia, a new Malaysia-based airline and part of Avia Solutions Group, has progressed to phase three of the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) application process and is targeting the launch of cargo operations in November 2025.
In 2024, Ascend Airways Malaysia secured a Conditional Air Service Permit from the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) and began the process of obtaining an AOC from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).
In a statement today, the Kuala Lumpur-based aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance (ACMI) and charter airline said it will offer both passenger and cargo services.
'The airline's first Boeing 737-800 freighter is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia in the third quarter of 2025 to support the final stages of the AOC process and the launch of cargo operations.
'Two passenger-configured Boeing 737-800 aircraft will follow, with deliveries expected by the end of 2025 and early 2026,' it said.
Ascend Airways Malaysia chief executive officer Germal Singh Khera said the airline aims to become a trusted ACMI partner, helping carriers enhance operational agility and meet growing demand for passenger and cargo services across the Asia-Pacific region.
'As a new ACMI airline in Malaysia, we are continually grateful for the support, global outlook, and proactive approach extended by the Ministry of Transport, CAAM, MAVCOM, and other relevant authorities advancing the aviation industry in Malaysia.
'This overwhelming support has enabled us to establish a solid operational foundation to assist air operators and their ambitions in the region,' he said.
Meanwhile, Ascend Airways United Kingdom chief executive officer Alastair Willson said the Malaysian entity will form part of the group's broader seasonal fleet strategy.
'ACMI is a proven solution for airlines seeking to efficiently meet dynamic travel demand and unlock new revenue opportunities. We remain resolute in our aspirations to be leaders in this space,' he said.
Avia Solutions Group already holds an AOC in Indonesia and is seeking regulatory approval for additional AOCs in Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia by the end of 2026.

Ringgit firm against major currencies before key US CPI release

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — The ringgit maintained its upward momentum against the US dollar and other major currencies, as traders and investors awaited the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) tonight. At 6 pm, the local note strengthened to 4.2290/2320, an increase of 0.08 per cent against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2320/2360. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said higher-than-expected July readings could prompt the US Federal Reserve to reconsider cutting the Federal Funds Rate at its Federal Open Market Committee meeting in September. He said the final estimate for Malaysia's second-quarter (2Q) gross domestic product (GDP) would also be closely monitored. The Industrial Production Index as well as Index of Services and Construction Work Done for 2Q indicate that the final GDP figure could come in lower than the official advance estimate of 4.5 per cent. 'Our estimates showed that GDP in 2Q could settle at 4.3 per cent. As such, the growth trajectory will determine the degree of monetary accommodativeness in light of the weaker economic outlook globally,' he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit ended firmer against major currencies. It edged up versus the Japanese yen to 2.8490/8512 from Monday's close of 2.8657/8686, improved against the euro to 4.9090/9125 from 4.9269/9316 yesterday and increased vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.6905/6946 from 5.6933/6987. The ringgit also traded higher against regional peers. It advanced against the Singapore dollar to 3.2867/2893 from 3.2936/2973 at yesterday's close and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 13.0135/0300 from 13.0569/0769. The local note also appreciated versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.6/259.9 from 259.9/260.3 previously and rose vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.41/7.42 from 7.42/7.43. — Bernama

Bursa ends higher as US-China tariff truce lifts sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia extended its upward momentum to close higher today, boosted by news of the US's decision to extend its 90-day tariff truce with China until Nov 10, which lifted market sentiment. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said major Asian indices also trended positively as investors welcomed news that the US and China had agreed yesterday to extend their tariff truce by 90 days, avoiding steep duties that could have disrupted trade flows. 'The deal maintains existing US tariffs at 30% and Chinese tariffs at 10%, providing additional time for negotiations and lifting investor sentiment across the region,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, he said market sentiment was further boosted by optimism over easing geopolitical tensions, as US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska on Friday to discuss the war in Ukraine. Back home, Thong said the benchmark index closed at 1,567.90, edging above the key 1,565 resistance level, and a clear breakout above this threshold will set the stage for further gains. 'As such, our weekly FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) target remains at the 1,550-1,580 range,' he added. Traders are also awaiting key US inflation data, which could signal the Federal Reserve's next policy move. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo (Reuters) -Austrian energy drink company Red Bull has taken full ownership of Newcastle Falcons, who will be renamed Newcastle Red Bulls, the Premiership Rugby side said on Tuesday. The Kingston Park-based club, who were established in 1877 as Gosforth Football Club, have struggled in recent years, finishing bottom of the standings in the last three Premiership seasons in a row. "Red Bull's investment in Newcastle is a very positive development and demonstrates the confidence in and potential of the (Premiership)," Rugby Football Union (RFU) CEO Bill Sweeney said in a statement. "We've been pleased to support the club, the league and Red Bull in the process which will be the first major new investment in a Prem club since 2016." Several Premiership clubs have financially struggled in recent years, with Wasps, Worcester Warriors and London Irish being put into administration in 2022 and 2023, while Championship side Jersey Reds disbanded. Red Bull owns two of the 10 Formula One teams and has invested in soccer clubs across the globe, but this is their first acquisition of a rugby side. "We're delighted to have acquired Newcastle Red Bulls and look forward to empowering the club to reach its full competitive potential," said Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull's CEO for corporate projects and investments. Newcastle, who won the Premiership in 1998, begin their league campaign on September 26 when they host Saracens. (Reporting by Chiranjit Ojha in BengaluruEditing by Christian Radnedge)
