Three Takeaways from the Calgary-Vegas Game
The Calgary Flames were beaten by the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in OT in what was a nail-biting David vs Goliath encounter on Saturday night. While the home side put on a valiant effort, the Vancouver Canucks, who won their game earlier in the day, are now just two points below the Flames, and are certainly believers that the second wild-card spot is well within reach, at the cost of Calgary's own playoff hopes.
Here are my three takeaways from this game:
1) Power play is not looking too hot
After a brief improvement in man-advantage situations against Anaheim, the Flames power play relapsed against the Knights.
How bad?
Calgary couldn't set up a shot on goal in their first, second and fourth/final power plays.
Oh, but it's even worse…
The Flames had four power plays of eight minutes, where they had an expected goals value of 0.32. That is LESS than the 0.35 that the Knights produced in their 3:29 minutes of 5-on-4 advantage in regulation alone.

2) Tied at end of regulation, but Vegas dominated the stats sheet
We talked in the preview article that in the season series, Calgary had 23.5 shots on goal per game against Vegas (second-worst against any team this season), while Vegas had 37.5 against Calgary (third-best against any team this season).
Well, it wasn't much different this game as Calgary had 23 shots on and Vegas had 34. The Flames were outshot by 11.
Vegas had an expected goal value of 1.56 and Calgary had 3.38.
A difference of 1.82.

3) Dustin Wolf
Perhaps the only reason why the Flames were in this game was because of Wolf. The California-native netminder put on a save percentage of 91.2 in the loss, and the fact that he was given the First-Star award, in a game against a top-quality opponent, is evidence of his rising stardom. The final play of game should not change any of that.

(AP) — Rookie center fielder Denzel Clarke made yet another spectacular catch for the Athletics, this time reaching high above the wall to rob the Los Angeles Angels' Nolan Schanuel of a home run on Monday night. The Angels had one out and no one on in the bottom of the first when Schanuel launched a 1-0 splitter from Grant Holman toward left-center. Clarke raced back and planted his right foot about halfway up the wall in a perfectly timed leap and grabbed the top for support. He extended the upper half of his body several feet beyond the wall and made a backhand grab with his left arm fully stretched out. Clarke let out a roar after the catch. Schanuel gazed toward the outfield in disbelief, and Holman held his hands above his head. Clarke has made several terrific catches since he debuted on May 23. He robbed the Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk of a home run a week and a half ago. It's only June and we might have the catch of the year already after Athletics outfielder Denzel Clarke pulled off an incredible home run robbery. The Athletics are in Anaheim playing the Los Angeles Angels, and in the bottom of the first inning of Monday's contest, Nolan Schanuel took Grant Holman's splitter deep to center field. It looked like it was going to go over the wall to give the Angels an early 1-0 lead. On May 30 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Clarke robbed Alejandro Kirk from a home run as he scaled the wall to catch the ball back in his home country. The catch against the Angels come three days after he had another incredible snag against the Baltimore Orioles, as he turned on the jets and hauled in the ball before hitting the wall to steal a hit away from Jorge Mateo. Did A's Denzel Clarke secure MLB's catch of the year with this crazy grab?
A's center fielder Denzel Clarke made what was arguably the catch of the season on Monday night, climbing the wall to rob the Angels' Nolan Schanuel of a would-be home run. It's the latest in a string of highlight-reel catches for the 25-year-old rookie, who is playing in just his 16th big league game. Just three days ago, Clarke made a highlight-reel running catch, injuring his shoulder while running into the center field wall to rob Baltimore's Jorge Mateo of a would-be base hit. For that play, he was awarded MLB's Play of the Week award. Clarke's play against the Angels on Monday came on just the third pitch of game. Schanuel crushed a ball that appeared ticketed to go well over the left-center field wall. Instead, Clarke tracked it, leapt, and used the wall to elevate his glove to make the play. Schanuel looked in stunned silence before going back to the dugout. JJ Bleday, a former top prospect, had been the A's everyday center fielder, before being demoted when Clarke was called up. However, Bleday struggled mightily on offense, and is batting just .196. He's returned to the big league roster, but has moved over to left field. Clarke, drafted by the A's out of Cal State Northridge in the fourth round in 2021, rose through the prospect ranks early in his A's career, even playing in the Futures Game in 2022. He's known for his speed, snagging 36 stolen bases in Double-A last season.
