Pete Alonso crushes two homers, Griffin Canning twirls six strong innings in Mets' 6-1 win over Dodgers
The Mets locked up the season series with a 6-1 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Here are some takeaways... - As was the case in the first two games of this series, the Mets were able to jump out to a first inning advantage. After LA booted a potential double play ball, the first run of the game came in on an RBI groundout, then Pete Alonso crushed an opposite-field two-run shot to make it 3-0. Advertisement The Mets' offense generated plenty of traffic against Tony Gonsolin and the Dodgers bullpen over the next few innings, but they weren't able to come up with the big hit needed until Alonso struck again in the eighth -- crushing a monstrous 447-foot three-run homer to deep right field. The big man is now tied with Seiya Suzuki for the NL lead with 53 RBI on the season. He's also tied with Darryl Strawberry for the most multi-homer games in franchise history (22) and is just two long balls behind David Wright for the second-most in franchise history (241). - On the mound, Griffin Canning delivered a much-needed bounce back outing. The right-hander was magnificent as he limited the high-powered Dodgers lineup to just three hits and a walk while striking out seven across six scoreless innings of work. Canning's best frame of the night was the bottom of the fifth inning, when he worked around a one out Dalton Rushing single by punching out both Kiké Hernández and Shohei Ohtani -- the latter of which was on a nasty painted 3-2 changeup. Advertisement After his best showing of the season, the California-native is now down to an impressive 2.90 ERA. - José Castillo had to work around a bit of a scare before the Mets tacked on their insurance in the eighth. The left-hander allowed a single and a hit-by-pitch, but bounced back to strike out the next two batters with the tying run at the plate and the top of the order looming. Castillo returned for a easy bottom of the eighth, giving him 6.0 scoreless innings since joining the Mets. - Los Angeles was able to break up the shutout with a solo shot off the bat of Andy Pages in the bottom of the ninth. It was the first home run Ryne Stanek allowed this season -- but it was no harm no foul, as he quickly put the finishing touches on this one to secure the win and clinch the season series. Advertisement - Juan Soto saw his five-game hitting and extra-base streak come to an end, but the star outfielder continues showing signs that's he's rounding back into form -- breaking out the Soto Shuffle at times as he drew three walks across four plate appearances. - Brandon Nimmo enjoyed another strong showing back in the two-spot against the righty -- picking up another hit and scoring two runs. He's now reached base in eight of his last nine appearances and has scored six runs over that span. - Jeff McNeil pushed his hitting streak to six with a one out single in the second. - Ronny Mauricio is still looking for his first big-league knock this season. The 24-year-old was back in the lineup batting seventh and playing third base, but he was held hitless and struck out twice across four at-bats. 'He can talk as much as he wants' - Carla Ward shrugs off Slovenia boss comments
Carla Ward batted away suggestions that Slovenian manager Sasa Kolman had outfoxed his Irish counterpart ahead of their Nations League promotion decider at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The boss, who struck up a friendship with Jim McGuinness at Celtic, trumpeted his 'tactical win' after beating the Girls in Green 4-0 in February. Kolman claimed he didn't bother with a Plan B as he knew what Ireland would do, declaring that they 'played into our hands'. Ward hit back, saying: 'I'm going to concentrate on us and what we do. He can talk as much as he wants. 'It's not hard to look at a Carla Ward team over the last eight years and work out how I like to play the game. 'He can comment all he likes. It just shows that he's probably had a look at my career, which I can take a little bit of confidence from. 'My focus is on my team and how we set up.' As a consequence of that drubbing in Ward's second game at the helm, Ireland require a four-goal victory over Slovenia at Páirc Uí Chaoimh to achieve automatic promotion to League A. With that, they would gain a guaranteed play-off spot for the 2027 World Cup. Ireland enter with doubts surrounding the participation of Lucy Quinn and Aoife Mannion, who have started all five games under Ward. Quinn has been struck down by an illness and looks less likely to feature. Mannion is suffering from a quad issue after a long season, but could play a part. 'She's a doubt, but not a major doubt,' said Ward. 'It's an overload more than anything. 'She's finished the season, gone straight out to Portugal to play in the Sevens, and it's managing her load. 'We're hopeful that she'll be fit. We'll see today how she gets on, but she's massively important for what we want to do and the way that we want to play.' Ireland have switched to a possession-based style under Ward. Yet, both of their late goals against Turkey were a result of balls launched into the box. Ward wouldn't be drawn on any plans to mix things up. 'I can't say, can I? I'm not going to tell you that. What I will say is we are preparing ourselves in the best possible way to go and get the job done. 'There's so many different permutations, but we've whittled it down. We need to win by four clear goals, which sets it up for an exciting evening. 'I've heard an awful lot about the crowd here. I've heard an awful lot about the good times here. We'll be ready. We know what we have to do. We're going to have to be aggressive but also secure at the same time.' Ireland's latest recruit, Erin Healy, could be in line for a debut if Ireland are left hunting goals. Amid a confusing contract situation, Adelaide United had confirmed that the California-native will remain with the club for the coming season. However, Ward believes she may yet relocate to Europe, as previously indicated. 'She might still,' said the international boss. 'There's a clause in her contract, probably quite smart from Adelaide to come out and say that when she's just got her first call-up. All I can say is there's interest.' Ward isn't distracted by internal staff changes in the FAI, either. Chief football officer Marc Canham has departed, while head of women and girls' football Hannah Dingley is leaving this summer for Manchester City. 'It's massively important that we replace those two roles with football people,' said Ward. 'That for me is an absolute non-negotiable priority. 'But right here and now, does it affect us? No. I think I'm very good at utilising the right people at the right time.'

It is a reward for her form with Adelaide United, where she scored eight goals in 17 starts, which is also expected to result in a move to England before next season. And it also helps to reassure her that she made the right decision two years ago when she graduated from Gonzaga University. It was a crossroads in her life and she decided to sign for Portuguese outfit Clube de Albergaria. 'And I was kind of scared that if I didn't get my foot in the door there at the very beginning, it might be hard later down the road. 'I also knew that I wasn't done with soccer. I had more to give. 'So I gave it one more try to see what came of it and I fell in love with it again, I found the fun in it. And I think I'm at my best when I'm having fun. 'IRISH HERITAGE' Healy would like the chance to shine in these Nations League games against Turkey and Slovenia but knows she might have to bide her time. Even to be in the squad was a proud moment, particularly for her mum Maureen — although she also has Irish ancestry further back on her dad's side. She said: 'Irish heritage has always been part of who I am and who my family is. 'When I was in college, my coach asked a lot of our players if any of us had dual citizenship and, so, I asked my mom to see what that looked like and she was always collecting documents to get ready for that. 'Then I got my citizenship and ever since then it's just been my goal to play for this team and be a part of it. 'To get the call-up was an unreal experience, something I'd been working super hard for, something I'm super grateful for and it's super exciting to be here. 'It was every emotion I think, excitement, surrealness. 'Now I can just kind of play through my grandfather and make him proud. He passed away around eight years ago. 'My mom wanted to try to get out for one of the games in this camp but it's not going to work out this time. 'I just want to get my foot in the door and get comfortable. 'I'm ready to put my best foot forward and hopefully get some playing time. 'I just like to be involved in a lot of the play and I like to be creative. 'I think I'm hard to read so I give a defender a lot to defend against. That's what you guys can expect from me.'

Danity Kane singer Aubrey O'Day called Sean 'Diddy' Combs 'selfish' for having six of his seven children appear in court during his ongoing trial in New York. The rap mogul is facing federal charges related to sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty and denies any wrongdoing. 'The fact that the kids are marching up to that court, praying over everything and walking in with a bunch of women also that are encouraging it,' O'Day said on Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes's podcast Friday. The 'Damaged' singer, whose girl band was signed to Diddy's Bad Boy Records, continued: 'I don't know any father that would want their children to sit through testimony about how much their daddy liked to watch people [get] lubricated, f*****g, getting p****d on and urinated in their mouths, having his girlfriend come in the other room and rub their come all over his nipples.' 'Would you want your children to know about it?' she asked Holmes and Robach. 'It's concerning to me, that the optics of them being there and supporting [their] father are obviously a very strong play for the defense.' However, not all of Diddy's children stayed throughout the proceedings. Chance, 18, and the twins Jesse and D'Lila, also 18, left the courtroom twice on May 12, while male escort Daniel Phillip shared graphic details about an alleged paid sexual encounter between himself and Ventura, which he said Combs watched while masturbating, multiple outlets reported. 'It's telling to me. It means that daddy's being selfish and he needs — in my opinion — it feels like, 'Daddy needs you in court because daddy needs all the optics to look in his favor,' and I don't really care what you have to sit through,' said O'Day. Her comments come after she revealed she would not be taking the stand against her former mentor, despite being contacted by Homeland Security. O'Day rose to fame in 2005 with the MTV reality show Making the Band 3, which saw Diddy form Danity Kane. However, the record producer fired O'Day and Wanita 'D. Woods' Woodgett from the group in 2008, as captured on the show. O'Day would have been the second member of Danity Kane to testify against him. Prosecutors revealed Thursday that Dawn Richard, 41, will be their next witness following Cassie Ventura's bombshell testimony. The California-native has long been vocal about her experiences with Diddy, accusing him of attempting to silence her through nondisclosure agreements and has spoken about alleged mistreatment during her time in Danity Kane. In a 2022 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, O'Day claimed she was fired from Danity Kane for not doing 'what was expected' of her — 'not talent-wise but in other areas.' She celebrated Diddy's September 2024 arrest on X, writing: "The purpose of Justice is to provide an ending and allow us the space to create a new chapter.' "Women never get this. I feel validated.
