New year, new contract: Melquizael Costa says win at UFC Seattle would open doors
SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Cold and snow aren't typically part of Melquizael Costa's pre-fight preparations. But this training camp has been a little different.
The back half of his camp has taken place over 4,600 miles North of the norm. Rather than Chute Boxe in Bauru, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Costa (21-7 MMA, 2-2 UFC) is spending the final three weeks at Brazilian Martial Arts Center, getting ready for the biggest fight of his life: a Feb. 22 bout vs. Andre Fili at UFC Fight Night 252 in Seattle.
'I'm very happy about it,' Costa recently told MMA Junkie through a Portuguese-language interpreter. 'I had just one fight last year. I just like to fight. I'm very happy I get to fight this guy who was already in the UFC for a while, so it's going to be very good for me. I'm even happier because I renewed my contract with the UFC.'
While many things are different about this camp, some staple features have remained the same. Costa's main training partner, UFC featherweight Joanderson Brito, and Chute Boxe coach Joao Emilio have made the trip with him.
Brito (17-4-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) is in the early stages of preparation for an April 5 fight vs. Pat Sabatini (19-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and will play even more of a key role than usual for this bout. Brito fought Fili (24-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC) in April 2022 and won by knockout in 41 seconds. Costa helped Brito prepare for that bout and hopes he can mirror that success.
'I watched him since 2015, 2016. I saw him when he fought Max Holloway,' Costa said. 'It's not new for me. I worked with 'Turbarao' Joanderson Brito in his last fight against him, so I'm familiar with his fight (style). … My team and I work hard all the time. I'm ready for the fight. I'm very confident. I like the crowd. I like the big event. I liked to be in front of the cameras. I'm very happy with this and comfortable.'
Costa, 28, has alternated losses and wins since his UFC debut in January 2023. He lost to Thiago Moises, then beat Austin Lingo, then lost to Steve Garcia, and most recently defeated Shayilan Nuerdanbieke.
This will be the first fight for Costa on a new multifight deal. He hopes his performances can lead to more activity as he continues his ascent up the divisional ladder, all the while familiarizing himself with the international fanbase.
'I want to win this fight as soon as possible, and I want to fight again as soon (after that). If I don't get hurt, I want to get the next fight as soon as possible. … This fight is going to open up a lot of doors for me. He's been in the UFC a long time, so it's going to be good for me. I don't care who I fight. I just am training to fight anybody. Whatever, I just want to fight. I don't care who I'm fighting for. … After this fight, I don't want one name. I just need a date.'

Sean O'Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili 2 predictions: Full card, odds, picks for UFC 316
Sean O'Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili 2 predictions: Full card, odds, picks for UFC 316 Sean O'Malley is finally getting his rematch. O'Malley will enter the octagon at UFC 316 on Saturday, June 7 in hopes of reclaiming his UFC Bantamweight title from Merab Dvalishvil, who stripped O'Malley of his title back in September. Dvalishvil defeated O'Malley by unanimous decision at UFC 306 on Sept. 14, 2024. Days after the loss in Las Vegas, which marked the second of his career, O'Malley revealed he competed with a torn labrum in his hip that later required surgery. Following a nearly nine-month break from the cage, O'Malley is healthy and set for his return. Saturday's fight marks O'Malley's first fight since his loss to Dvalishvil. "It's going to make it take much sweeter of a victory after having (lost) to him," O'Malley said during an interview with UFC leading up to the fight. "I wouldn't accept the fight or ask for the fight if I didn't truly believe that I could go out there and beat him. I know I can and I know I will on June 7." Here's everything you need to know about UFC 316, from predictions to odds and streaming information: Predictions for Merab Dvalishvil vs. Sean O'Malley 2 Brady Trettenero, Sports Betting Dime: Dvalishvili grinds down O'Malley "Unless O'Malley lands something huge early, this fight follows the same script as the first one. I see Dvalishvili grinding out another decision, but at -310 on the moneyline, there's zero value. Look for the fight to go the distance at -280." Anthony Smith, ESPN: Dvalishvili won't give O'Malley space to operate "This (pick) has nothing to do with O'Malley. I just think in order to beat Merab, you have to be the bantamweight version of the late Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson. There has to be that one-punch, shut-off power. O'Malley fights so well at range, but I don't think Merab is going to give him space to do what he does best." UFC Cuts Ties With Hakeem Dawodu In Latest Roster Sweep
There are three things that will lead to a release in the UFC: losing, consistently missing weight, and inactivity. Hakeem Dawodu had a touch of all three issues over the last few years, and that's likely why Dana White and the UFC chose to part ways with the veteran. The 33-year-old hasn't fought since he lost a unanimous decision to Cub Swanson in August 2023. The loss to Swanson was his third in four fights. Dawodu missed weight by 3.5 pounds in September 2022 ahead of his unanimous decision loss to Julian Erosa. Between the losses to Swanson and Erosa, Dawodu withdrew from a scheduled fight with Lucas Almeida in June 2023. Overall, it hasn't been an especially strong last few years, and despite Dawodu's talent and relative youth, the promotion elected to remove him from the roster. Dawodu's best years as a mixed martial artist took place when he was a part of the World Series of Fighting promotion. From 2014–2017, Dawodu compiled a record of 7-0-1 with WSOF. That run and the folding of WSOF led Dawodu and others like Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson, Marlon Moraes, and Justin Gaethje to sign with the UFC. Dawodu didn't have immediate success with the UFC. In fact, he lost his first fight with the promotion via submission, and it took just 39 seconds for Danny Henry to submit him. However, Dawodu bounced back and won his next five fights in the UFC. Dawodu wouldn't take another loss until he dropped a unanimous decision in June 2021. In February 2022, Dawodu rebounded with a win over Michael Trizano for what will likely be his last victory with the promotion. In addition to Dawodu's lack of activity and recent victories, he also rarely won fights by stoppage. His lone stoppage win in the UFC was a head-kick KO of Yoshinori Horie in July 2019. From the looks of Dawodu's Instagram account, he appears to be training, but it is unclear if he is still interested in competing. As it is, Dawodu, Kron Gracie and Connor Matthews were separated from the promotion. Looking ahead to Saturday, UFC 316 takes place in Inglewood, California at the Intuit Dome. Here's a look at the complete card.

UFC Cuts Ties With Royce Gracie's Nephew, Kron Gracie
Let's face it. It's tough being the grand son of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer and the nephew of a UFC legend. Those are tough shoes to fill if you're attempting to establish a career in combat sports. Kron Gracie has found that out firsthand. On Thursday, per Full Contact MTWF on X, Gracie was one of three fighters removed from the UFC's active roster. Quite honestly, the move from Dana White and Co. should come as no surprise. The 36-year-old whose grandfather is Hélio Gracie and whose uncle is Royce Gracie trains with Nate and Nick Diaz had an esteemed run as a BJJ practitioner, but his MMA career–at least in the UFC–has been less than stellar. Gracie's release comes on the heels of his third straight loss in the Octagon. The last defeat was a brutal TKO stoppage at the hands of Bryce Mitchell in December 2024 at UFC 310. Gracie hadn't just lost three fights in a row in the UFC, he's also been inactive. He fought once in December 2024. Before that, he fought in May 2023, and prior to that fight he was last in the Octagon in October 2019 when he lost a Fight-of-the-Night performance against Cub Swanson. Gracie's lone win in the UFC's Octagon in four fights came in his promotional debut. In February 2019, Gracie scored a first-round submission victory over Alex Caceres. At the time, it appeared the UFC could potentially have a contender on their hands in the featherweight division. Unfortunately, he fought just three times over the next five years and never won another fight with the promotion. While he hasn't announced his retirement from MMA, Gracie is on the wrong side of 35, and he has a modest 5-3 record in the sport. There's no doubt he can likely compete in BJJ tournaments and even train fighters in the martial art his family made a mainstream system in combat sports. But his chances of becoming a legitimate contender for a title on a higher level of MMA are done. The other two fighters the UFC separated from on Thursday were Hakeem Dawodu and Connor Matthews. UFC 316 takes place on Sunday with Merab Dvalishvili defending his title against Sean O'Malley in a rematch of their first battle in September 2024. Here is a look at the complete card. The last defeat was a brutal TKO stoppage at the hands of Bryce Mitchell in December 2024 at UFC 310.
