Rugby World Cup 1995 I On this day: Tragedy, triumph and turmoil in dramatic third round

Photo: AFP Image: AFP The third round of the 1995 Rugby World Cup began in tragedy. The match between Tonga and Ivory Coast had barely kicked off when Ivorian wing Max Brito collected a high ball. He was tackled fairly, but following the ensuing ruck, Brito was left prone on his back. He had been paralysed in a freak accident. It remains the darkest day in the history of the Rugby World Cup. Brito was quickly airlifted to hospital, but the damage was permanent. He would spend 25 years in a wheelchair before passing away in 2022 at the age of 54. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The match itself was otherwise forgettable, as the two teams fought to avoid finishing bottom of their pool. The West Africans showed improvement from their opening game, where they at times appeared unfamiliar with the rules. The more experienced Tongans were always in control and secured a 29–11 victory. The match was played in Rustenburg in front of about 8 000 local fans, who passionately supported the underdogs. When Ivorian flanker Alfred Okou scored his team's try, the celebration was so intense it felt as if they had won the game. The Australia vs Romania fixture was the first international played in Stellenbosch. The venue was selected in honour of South African rugby legend Danie Craven, who lived there for many years and passed away in 1993. The Wallabies wore striking green jerseys with yellow hoops to avoid a colour clash with Romania's yellow kit. They also used the match as an opportunity to give their backup players a run. Among them were future Australian rugby legends George Gregan, John Eales, David Wilson, Matthew Burke, Tim Horan, and Joe Roff — players who would form the core of the Wallabies' 1999 World Cup-winning side. They proved too strong for the Romanians, who conceded six tries in a 42–3 defeat, with flying wing Joe Roff scoring twice. One of the tournament's best matches took place at Loftus Versfeld between France and Scotland. Dubbed 'The Eliminator', the clash carried high stakes: the loser would face the formidable All Blacks in the quarter-final. The match had the intensity of a knockout fixture and was only decided in the fifth minute of stoppage time. The Scots had been leading 19–15 and were desperate for referee Wayne Erickson to blow the final whistle — only for French wing Émile Ntamack to score after a prolonged siege in the Scottish 22. It was the final movement of the match. Scottish hearts were broken, but they had missed their chances earlier. The usually reliable goal-kicker Gavin Hastings endured a nightmare with the boot, a stark contrast to the precision of French centre Thierry Lacroix. It was a brutal contest between the Six Nations rivals — France's Philippe Benetton (No 8) and scrum-half Guy Accoceberry both suffered broken arms. France edged it 22–19, with Lacroix kicking five penalties and converting Ntamack's try. Scotland flanker Rob Wainwright scored his side's sole try.

Blue Sharks can't wait to sink their jaws into Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Cape Verde head coach Pedro Brito, better known as Bubista, says playing Malaysia is more than just a friendly — it's a vital part of his team's road to the 2026 World Cup. The Blue Sharks, currently ranked 75th in the world and pushing for qualification to their first-ever World Cup, are in Kuala Lumpur for two matches against Malaysia – at the Cheras Football Stadium today and at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil (June 3). The African side see the games against the Harimau Malaya as a valuable and different challenge. 'We like to play two very good games. It would be a good preparation for us and also for Malaysia who have a big game against Vietnam,' said Brito during a press conference at the Cheras Football Stadium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. 'We want to experience different kinds of football that these nations can present. With more experience, we are closer to our target which is the World Cup in 2026.' This will be the first meeting between Cape Verde and Malaysia, and for a small island nation from West Africa with a population of just over half a million, every international exposure counts. 'We are playing Malaysia for the first time. It's a different challenge. It is important to play against different teams. It is an opportunity for us to see how we can adapt to various styles,' said the 54-year-old Brito. Cape Verde have been steadily rising in the global football scene. They reached the quarter-finals at the 2023 African Nations Cup and regularly compete with top African sides. Despite having players based across Europe and the Americas, Brito believes the test against Malaysia comes at a good time – not only for tactical development but also for integrating young talents. 'We have many young players, some first-timers, so it is important for them too. 'The ranking doesn't matter as we are seeking a challenge from the match.' Ranked more than 56 places above Malaysia (No. 131), Cape Verde could have opted for stiffer tests in Europe or Africa but the decision to travel to South-East Asia was intentional - to face a different kind of footballing culture and continue building their identity on the global stage.

Humble Cape Verde not looking down on Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: It's said that many top footballing nations are reluctant to play lower-ranked sides like Malaysia. Maybe, it doesn't benefit them at all, maybe it doesn't serve any purpose. Maybe they don't want to waste their time on us. But Cape Verde don't mind doing so. Terima kasih. The West African team, ranked 72nd in the world, much higher than any Southeast Asian teams, are in town to play two international friendlies against world No. 131 Malaysia this week. Cape Verde coach Pedro "Bubista" Brito said that his team's objective is to collect meaningful match experience rather than chase world ranking-related results. "It doesn't matter the rankings of the other teams. The more matches you play, the more experience you have. This is what brings us closer to our target, to qualify for the World Cup." This is Cape Verde's first visit to Malaysia, and Brito welcomed the opportunity to be in "a far country" as part of their journey toward global recognition. "It's very important for us to be here so people can know where Cape Verde is," said Brito. An island nation with a population of only 596,000, Cape Verde has produced stars like Logan Costa (playing for La Liga side Villarreal), Dailon Livramento (Serie A club Verona) and Bryan Teixeira (Bundesliga's Magdeburg). Brito made it clear that they are not taking lower-ranked Malaysia lightly. "No, it's never easy. I have all the respect for Malaysia. We are a small country, and this kind of matches are essential for our growth and experience." Brito is counting on their Selangor player, Alvin Fortes, to help them beat Malaysia in tomorrow's international friendly at KLFA Stadium.

New website launched by the State could address the issue costing Floridians their healthcare

For more than a year, 9 Investigates has reported on the problems with an online system that has caused some families to go hungry and others to lose healthcare. There now seems to be a fix for one of the many procedural issues that's cost Floridians both food stamps and their Medicaid. The Florida Department of Children and Families, which oversees the MyACCESS system for applicants, has launched a new website that streamlines the mandatory interview process for benefits seekers. A separate website also now allows users to schedule in-person appointments at a regional ACCESS Centers where people can get case updates and in-person help with their application. People who receive SNAP or Medicaid have always been required to complete mandatory interviews. They're also asked to upload documents verifying they really need the state's help. However, for months, 9 Investigates has brought you story after story of Floridians who lost health care and had to stretch the food in their fridge because they couldn't get past those two critical steps, due to issues with the MyACCESS portal, which launched in December of 2023…, Since then, Channel 9 has reported on the disconnecting phone lines, the website repeatedly down for maintenance, and user's documents disappearing after they've been uploaded. Now, instead of endlessly calling the state to try and complete mandatory interviews, Floridians can bypass some of that frustration and use this link to schedule their interview slot. Via the website, users get a time and date for their interview. They're told what number will contact them and get reminders until the interview happens. Community advocate Vanessa Brito has helped about 2 thousand people who have struggled with the call center and technical issues. She believes the new interview scheduling site will help those applying now. 'This is redeeming moving forward, but what are we going to do to deal with what has happened in the past and help those folks, who have already been affected and quite possibly lost benefit?' said Brito. Since Channel 9 began reporting on this issue over a year ago, the Department of Children and Families has stated that issues were due to 'user error.' However, in April, Channel 9 uncovered documents showing DCF has known about issues from the beginning. Channel 9 is still waiting for DCF's comment on that reporting. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, 9 investigators reached out to DCF to ask them about the new websites. Channel 9 did not hear back before news time. the Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. And click here to stream Channel 9 Eyewitness News live.
