Humble Cape Verde not looking down on Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: It's said that many top footballing nations are reluctant to play lower-ranked sides like Malaysia.
Maybe, it doesn't benefit them at all, maybe it doesn't serve any purpose. Maybe they don't want to waste their time on us.
But Cape Verde don't mind doing so. Terima kasih.
The West African team, ranked 72nd in the world, much higher than any Southeast Asian teams, are in town to play two international friendlies against world No. 131 Malaysia this week.
Cape Verde coach Pedro "Bubista" Brito said that his team's objective is to collect meaningful match experience rather than chase world ranking-related results.
"It doesn't matter the rankings of the other teams. The more matches you play, the more experience you have. This is what brings us closer to our target, to qualify for the World Cup."
This is Cape Verde's first visit to Malaysia, and Brito welcomed the opportunity to be in "a far country" as part of their journey toward global recognition.
"It's very important for us to be here so people can know where Cape Verde is," said Brito.
An island nation with a population of only 596,000, Cape Verde has produced stars like Logan Costa (playing for La Liga side Villarreal), Dailon Livramento (Serie A club Verona) and Bryan Teixeira (Bundesliga's Magdeburg).
Brito made it clear that they are not taking lower-ranked Malaysia lightly.
"No, it's never easy. I have all the respect for Malaysia. We are a small country, and this kind of matches are essential for our growth and experience."
Brito is counting on their Selangor player, Alvin Fortes, to help them beat Malaysia in tomorrow's international friendly at KLFA Stadium.

Spain target 'enormously important' Nations League defence
BARCELONA: Spain are aiming to become the first team to defend the Nations League trophy, with Luis de la Fuente's side going from strength to strength on the international stage ahead of next year's World Cup. The coach often reflects on La Roja's triumph at the 2023 tournament, which was an early indicator that a young Spanish side were on their way back to the top. It proved the springboard to Euro 2024 glory, and De la Fuente now wants to continue Spain's resurgence by retaining the title this summer in Germany. It would bode well for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada next summer, where Spain will be among the favourites. They face France in the Nations League semi-finals in Stuttgart before a potential final against either Germany or Portugal. "We attach enormous importance to it – it's almost more difficult than a European Championship, and we want to be the first team to win it twice," De la Fuente told reporters last week. "We want to continue competing at the highest level with these teams." After European Championship wins in 2008 and 2012, sandwiching their 2010 World Cup triumph in South Africa, the Spanish national team experienced a slump. Poor performances at the Russia and Qatar World Cups began to fade from memory, however, as De la Fuente's side beat Italy and Croatia to win the Nations League. The success also helped him personally, with many doubting his credentials and blaming him for an embarrassing defeat by Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying. The Scots beat De la Fuente's Spain in March 2023 – their last competitive defeat, 23 matches ago. Spain beat Italy, Germany, and France en route to the Euro 2024 final, where they overcame England to claim their first major trophy in 12 years. The worrying sign for the rest of the world is that De la Fuente's Spanish side remain hungry, with many players yet to reach their peak. The team is led by Barcelona's teenage winger Lamine Yamal, who turned 17 on the eve of the Euro final, while on the opposite flank, Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, 22, also has his best years ahead of him. Barcelona's midfield maestro Pedri, also 22, pulls the strings, while there are emerging talents in other areas – including Porto striker Samu Aghehowa and new Real Madrid signing Dean Huijsen. Despite his focus on younger players, De la Fuente has shown he is not inflexible, turning to Real Betis midfielder Isco. After a superb season in which the former Real Madrid playmaker helped the Andalusians reach the Conference League final, the 33-year-old finally received the call-up he longed for. Some had said De la Fuente should have given Isco a chance last summer, but the coach was vindicated as his team went on to win the Euros. "He's going to add a lot – if we had any doubts, he wouldn't be here," said De la Fuente. "He could have been at the Euros, or not, but those who had to be there, were there." Isco's presence gives Spain even more depth in a midfield packed with quality – and still missing Manchester City's Rodri Hernández, who has yet to return to action after missing most of the season through injury. "In Spain, we are privileged to have many very good footballers," De la Fuente said during the Euros. "I think they are the best players in the world for many reasons." In almost every position, the coach is blessed with multiple strong options, with the team arguably only lacking one elite striker – although that has not held them back. Aghehowa, 21, could grow into that player, though De la Fuente continues to consider all his options – including veteran Álvaro Morata, Dani Olmo as a false nine, or Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the winner against England. "This is a team, and in that team, everyone contributes their bit to make a stronger, more solid group," said De la Fuente. "Samu is fantastic, Álvaro, Mikel, Dani... we can play in many ways with different players – and that is exactly what our strength is."

Ecstatic Kohli revels in first IPL title, albeit below Test highs
VIRAT Kohli said on Tuesday he had given his 'youth and prime' to land one of the best moments of his career as Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured him a first-ever Indian Premier League T20 title at the 18th time of asking. The 36-year-old Kohli, however, confessed that the six-run win over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, sweet as it was, ranked 'five levels below Test cricket'. The former India captain, who announced his retirement from Test cricket last month, top-scored with 43 as Bengaluru posted 190-9 in the final. It was not his most fluent innings, but it was vital for RCB as their bowlers then restricted Punjab to 184-7 with a crowd of more than 91,000 erupting in joy for their superstar. A teary-eyed Kohli, who has played in all 18 of RCB's campaigns including the three previous finals that they lost, dropped to the ground before being hugged by his teammates. 'I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled,' said Kohli before launching into an impassioned defence of the oldest and longest format of the game. 'This moment is right up there with the best moments in my career. But it still ranks five levels below Test cricket. That's how much I value Test cricket. And that's how much I love Test cricket. 'So I would just urge the youngsters coming through... if you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket, give your heart and soul to it.' Punjab head coach Ricky Ponting said: 'I totally understand what he (Kohli) means'. Two-time World Cup winner Kohli has now walked away from two international formats after he gave up T20s following India's World Cup triumph last year. One of the all-time greats across all formats of the game, Kohli has always been the perfect poster boy of the five-day game with his prolific run-scoring and on-field passion in whites. 'King Kohli' ended his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85. In the IPL, Kohli joined Bengaluru at the start of lucrative league in 2008 and stuck with them after the disappointment of losing side the finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016. Kohli remained a key player for his team this season with 657 runs including eight half-centuries in 15 innings, often playing the anchor after opening the batting. 'Tonight I'll sleep like a baby,' said Kohli, who hinted that a full retirement may not be far off. 'I have an opportunity to play this game for not many years, there's an end-date to our career. 'And by the time I hang up my boots, I want to sit at home and say I gave it everything I had.'

Inzaghi leaves Inter after Champions League final thrashing
Simone Inzaghi left Inter Milan after a humiliating 5-0 Champions League final defeat to Paris St-Germain, ending a trophyless season. (AP pic) MILAN : Simone Inzaghi has left his position as manager of Inter Milan, the Serie A club said on Tuesday, after a humiliating 5-0 loss in the Champions League final against Paris St Germain capped a trophyless season. Inter suffered a dismal end to their campaign with Saturday's thrashing in Munich coming after they finished second in Serie A, one point behind champions Napoli, and were knocked out in the Coppa Italia semi-finals 4–1 on aggregate by city rivals AC Milan. Inter face a race against time to appoint a new manager before the Club World Cup, with their campaign getting underway against Mexican side Monterrey on June 17. 'The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year journey, during which I gave everything,' Inzaghi said in a separate statement. Inzaghi won six trophies at Inter: one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia triumphs and three Italian Super Cups. 'I want to dedicate one last word to the millions of Nerazzurri (Inter) fans who cheered me on, cried and suffered in difficult moments and laughed and celebrated in the six triumphs we experienced together,' he added. 'I will never forget you.' Italian media reported that Inzaghi will join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal and will lead them in the Club World Cup in the United States. Inter confirmed that the decision for Inzaghi to leave the club was taken by mutual agreement earlier in the day. 'I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths,' club president Giuseppe Marotta said in a statement. La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Como's Cesc Fabregas and Olympique de Marseille's Roberto De Zerbi are potential candidates to replace Inzaghi at Inter. Several managers have left their clubs since the Serie A season wrapped up. Marco Baroni left Lazio after leading the club to a disappointing seventh-placed finish, paving the way for Maurizio Sarri's return a year after resigning. Atalanta are also searching for a new coach after Gian Piero Gasperini confirmed his departure on Saturday. Massimiliano Allegri returned as AC Milan coach for a second stint on Friday after the club sacked Sergio Conceicao after a season that saw them fail to qualify for any European competition.
