Michael Vick arrival sparks excitement, city to help out
The arrival of former NFL star Michael Vick as head coach at Norfolk State has brought fresh energy and national attention to the HBCU football program. As excitement builds, university and city officials expect larger game day crowds at Dick Price Stadium. To prepare, Norfolk State, the City of Norfolk, and Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) have teamed up to create smoother parking and transit options for fans. Free Parking and Transit for Spartan Fans HRT will offer free parking at both the MacArthur South and North garages for all home games. From there, Norfolk State buses will shuttle fans directly to the stadium, giving supporters an easy alternative to campus parking. Additionally, The Tide light rail will provide free rides two hours before and after each game. Fans can use the NSU Station or Ballentine/Broad Creek Station-both a short walk from the stadium. Officials urge everyone to stay safe by using marked crosswalks and sidewalks near tracks. Home Schedule for Michael Vick and the Spartans With Michael Vick leading the way, Norfolk State will host five home games in 2025 that should attract heavy attention across the HBCU landscape. The Spartans open at home against Towson on Thursday, August 28 at 7 p.m. They'll return for a heated "Battle of the States" against Virginia State on Saturday, September 6 at 6 p.m. Family Weekend features a matchup with Sacred Heart on Saturday, September 20 at 4 p.m. Later in the season, Homecoming brings South Carolina State to town on Saturday, October 25 at 2 p.m. The Spartans close the home slate against Morgan State on Saturday, November 15 at 12 p.m., which also includes Senior Day and Military Appreciation celebrations. Hold the mayo? Notre Dame football, Wake Forest agree to meet in Charlotte in 2027
SOUTH BEND — Monday's Notre Dame football scheduling announcement brought with it a question of great intrigue: Does a vat of mayonnaise get dumped on the winning coach of a regular-season Duke's Mayo Classic as it does in bowl season? Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame could find out in 2027 after it was announced the Irish will face Wake Forest at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL's Panthers. The neutral-site game is set for Oct. 9 that year as part of the annual ACC scheduling partnership with Notre Dame. Notre Dame is perfect in six all-time meetings with the Deacons, including a 47-7 thrashing on quarterback Sam Hartman's Senior Day in 2023. The Wake Forest graduate transfer played his first three high school seasons in the Charlotte area. The game also projects as a potential homecoming for several Charlotte-area products on the current Irish roster, including a trio of sophomores: defensive end Bryce Young, wideout Micah Gilbert and tight end Jack Larsen. 'More like Superman:' What Notre Dame football greats say about Jeremiyah Love Offensive lineman Sullivan Absher, a third-year sophomore, is from Belmont, N.C., while freshman safety JaDon Blair is from Winston-Salem, home of Wake Forest. Notre Dame's highly regarded 2026 recruiting class includes four key defensive prospects from the Tar Heel State: defensive ends Rodney Dunham (Charlotte) and Ebenezer Ewetade (Garner, N.C.); linebacker Thomas Davis Jr. (Matthews, N.C.), and safety Nick Reddish (Charlotte). The only previous visit to Charlotte for Notre Dame football came in the ACC Championship game in December of 2020, a 34-10 loss to Clemson. Notre Dame is 28-15 in current NFL stadiums, dating to 1980, including the postseason. Since 2014, the Irish lead all FBS teams with appearances in 17 different NFL stadiums, seven more than the closest program. Since 2016, Notre Dame has played 18 games in NFL stadiums, including eight postseason games. The Irish have gone 11-7 in those outings, including 7-2 with Freeman at the helm. A seven-game winning streak for Notre Dame in active NFL stadiums ended with the loss to Ohio State in the CFP national championship game in Atlanta. Early success crucial, 2025 best chance for UNC to make CFP according to CBS Sports team
Can UNC surpass preseason expectations and become a playoff team? All eyes will be on the North Carolina Tar Heels in Week 1 of the 2025 college football football season, as they welcome TCU to Kenan Stadium on Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m. for a primetime kickoff on ESPN. Not only will this highly-anticipated Labor Day matchup be a great, early-season test for UNC, it will also be the long-awaited collegiate coaching debut of Bill Belichick. North Carolina moved on from Mack Brown after its disappointing 2024 campaign, deciding to hire the 8-time Super Bowl Champion in an unexpected move. The Tar Heels have more than just a massive victory at stake. In a college football world where the ACC continues falling behind, CBS Sports' Danny Kannell said UNC needs to beat the Horned Frogs – and enjoy early-season success as a whole – on the Josh Pate College Football Show. "You know what game I think is flying under the radar, is the North Carolina-TCU game," Kannell said. "I think the ACC needs Bill Belichick and North Carolina to succeed. Belichick's not Deion Sanders, he's not the same mentality at all. It's all been about offseason distractions. One thing I do think Bill Belichick is going to bring, is eyeballs, especially on that game. If they win that game, I think it carries over. As opposed to if they lose that game, who the heck knows what could happen in Chapel Hill.' North Carolina's schedule gets slightly easier in the two weeks following its Labor Day clash with TCU. The Tar Heels will travel to Charlotte on Sept. 6, then return home to face Richmond on Sept. 13. UNC rolls to The Sunshine State on Sept. 20, playing UCF, then enters a bye week. UNC faces a home date with Clemson, the 2025 ACC favorite and a preseason College Football Playoff contender, on Oct. 4. After another bye week, North Carolina travels to California for a Friday, October 17 matchup, hosts Virginia on Oct. 25 and travels to Syracuse on Halloween. The Tar Heels host Stanford on November 8, stay in-state and travel to Wake Forest on Nov. 15, host Duke for Senior Day on Nov. 22 and travel to NC State on Nov. 29. CBS Sports' Josh Pate, in the same conversation on his radio show with Kannell, called UNC's 2025 season its best chance to compete for a National Championship. "Most people are thinking 'man, you got the Chapel Bill t-shirts printed, you better be a playoff contender," Pate said. "Ironically, this season may be their best shot, because it's the most workable schedule."" Can North Carolina surpass its preseason expectations, turning offseason dreams into that elusive championship? The Tar Heels will head into each game with a 0-0 mindset – and the hope in Chapel Hill is finally for a winning football program.
