Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) gave up most of their sharp intra-day gains due to the emergence of profit-taking as investors turned cautious amid reports of a ceasefire violation between Iran and Israel.
In the morning trade, markets bounced back sharply, mirroring a rally in global peers and a steep decline in crude oil prices amid hopes of a potential de-escalation in the Middle East conflict.
After surging 1,121.37 points or 1.36% to 83,018.16 in intra-day trade, the 30-share Sensex later trimmed most of its gains as reports surfaced of the ceasefire plan faltering. But the benchmark still managed to settle in the green, climbing 158.32 points or 0.19% to 82,055.11.
On similar lines, the 50-share Nifty rose 72.45 points or 0.29% to end at 25,044.35. The index fell from an intra-day high of 25,317.70.
'Initial gains in the domestic market, driven by the ceasefire announcement and sharp drop in crude prices, were short-lived as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East unsettled investor sentiment.
'Adding to the uncertainty was heightened volatility due to expiry day dynamics. Although the market attempted to break out of its recent consolidation range, persistent global risks continue to impede momentum,' Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.
From the Sensex constituents, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finserv and Titan were among the biggest gainers.
In contrast, Power Grid, Trent, NTPC, Maruti, HCL Tech and Bharat Electronics were among the laggards.
In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng settled significantly higher.
European markets were trading with gains in mid-session trade. U.S. markets ended in positive territory on Monday (June 23, 2025). Global oil benchmark Brent crude dropped 3.20% to $69.13 a barrel.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹1,874.38 crore on Monday (June 23, 2025), while Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) bought stocks worth ₹5,591.77 crore, according to exchange data.
On Monday (June 23, 2025), the 30-share BSE Sensex ended with a loss of 511.38 points or 0.62% at 81,896.79. The Nifty dropped 140.50 points or 0.56% to 24,971.90.

JPMorgan sees Asian Tech stocks gaining another 15-20% this year

Asian technology stocks may rally another 15 per cent-20 per cent this year, driven mainly by the strong momentum in the artificial intelligence space, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co. 'AI will continue to lead this upcycle on the growth in datacenter capex in 2025 and more confidence in 2026 growth,' analysts including Gokul Hariharan wrote in a report. 'We are not advising any meaningful rotation away from AI stocks in the next three months and would prefer' to stick with the winners. AI stocks are rapidly emerging as pivotal drivers of the region's equity markets, underpinned by a robust domestic appetite for automation and generative technology. A Bloomberg regional semiconductor index has risen over 12per cent this year to outperform an Asian equity gauge, and resilient demand for AI memory chips from big tech providers may drive further gains. JPMorgan's top stock picks include the region's largest chipmakers, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., SK Hynix Inc., Advantest Corp and Delta Electronics Inc. Those shares should continue their upward momentum in the next 12 months, as demand is not an issue and earnings will continue to be revised up, they wrote. The bank is more cautious on non-AI stocks, such as makers of personal computers, smartphones and consumer devices. Earnings downward revisions may continue as the impact of China consumption subsidies fades, the report added.

Market sentiment appears cautiously optimistic

Domestic equity market turned cautious in the Tuesday afternoon trade as reports stated a ceasefire violation between Iran and Israel. Markets gave up most of their gains amid profit-booking at close. From the derivatives front, market sentiment appeared cautiously optimistic. Put writers have shown confidence by adding aggressive positions near the current spot levels, signifying strong intent to defend support zones. India VIX remained subdued, sliding 2.88% lower to close at 13.64. The volatility index continued to hover below the crucial 15 mark, indicating calm sentiment in the broader market. 'Initial gains in the domestic market, driven by the ceasefire announcement and sharp drop in crude prices, were short-lived as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East unsettled investor sentiment. Adding to the uncertainty was heightened volatility due to expiry day dynamics. Though the market attempted to break out of its recent consolidation range, persistent global risks continue to impede momentum," said Vinod Nair, head of research, Geojit Investments Limited. 'Nifty index continued to oscillate within a narrow band, driven largely by news-based movements. Despite starting the session on a firm note, the index failed to sustain higher levels and succumbed to selling pressure near the resistance zone formed by the previous swing high. However, repeated rejections from the crucial resistance zone of 25,200–25,250 indicate that bulls are struggling to decisively clear this hurdle. A conclusive close above this band is imperative to reignite upward momentum,' said Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities. 'On the downside, the support cluster around 24,750–24,700 continues to act as a strong demand zone, playing a critical role in maintaining the bullish undertone. The index ended the session with a modest gain of 72.45 points, settling at 25,044.35.' In the morning trade, Domestic benchmarks mirrored a rally in global peers and a steep decline in crude oil prices. The BSE Sensex surged 1,121.37 points or 1.36% intra-day to 83,018.16. However, the benchmark gave up most of the gains. The Sensex settled 158.32 points or 0.19% higher at 82,055.11. The 50-share Nifty surged 72.45 points or 0.29% to end at 25,044.35. The index fell from an intra-day high of 25,317.70.

UK Government Says Chinese Spying On The Rise, Pledges $818 Million To Intelligence

Chinese spying and attempts by Beijing to undermine Britain's democracy and economy have risen in recent years, the UK government said Tuesday in a report on the Asian giant. Foreign minister David Lammy told parliament the Labour administration would invest £600 million ($818 million) in its intelligence services as a result of the findings. Prime Minister Keir Starmer commissioned an "audit" of Britain's relations with Beijing after he swept to power in landslide general election win last July. The report, published on Tuesday, recommended high-level engagement with China for a "trade and investment relationship" but also building "resilience" against threats posed by Beijing. "We understand that China is a sophisticated and persistent threat," but "not engaging with China is therefore no choice at all", Lammy told MPs. "Like our closest allies, we will co-operate where we can and we will challenge where we must," he said, vowing that meant "never compromising on our national security". Starmer has vowed to pursue a "consistent" relationship after the previous Conservative government first trumpeted a "golden era" of close diplomatic ties before relations became increasingly strained. The British PM hopes Chinese investment can help him achieve his main mission of firing up Britain's economy. But differences over Russia's war in Ukraine, Beijing's treatment of Uyghurs and Hong Kong -- including the imprisonment of media mogul Jimmy Lai -- pose hurdles to repairing relations. In a joint letter coordinated by Reporters Without Borders, 33 organisations around the globe wrote to Starmer on Tuesday asking him to meet Lai's son Sebastian. "As a British citizen facing an unthinkable ordeal, Sebastien Lai deserves to hear first-hand from the Prime Minister what the UK is doing to secure his father's release," said the letter, which was signed by groups including Amnesty International UK and Human Rights Foundation. Espionage allegations have also blighted the relationship in recent years, including claims that a Chinese businessman used his links with Britain's Prince Andrew to spy for the Communist Party. The report noted that "instances of China's espionage, interference in our democracy and the undermining of our economic security have increased in recent years". "Our national security response will therefore continue to be threat-driven, bolstering our defences and responding with strong counter-measures," the government said. Starmer's administration is due to rule on whether to approve Beijing's controversial plans to open the biggest embassy in Britain at a new London location. Residents, rights groups and China hawks oppose the development, fearing it could be used for the surveillance and harassment of dissidents.
