Harvey Elliott issues Liverpool statement amid Florian Wirtz swap transfer talks
Liverpool star Harvey Elliott has opened up on his future plans while on international duty after making just two Premier League starts under Arne Slot as the Reds won the league
Harvey Elliott has accepted that leaving Liverpool is a possibility this summer as he looks to do what is best for his career. The midfielder intends to weigh up his options in the coming weeks as he does not want to waste years of his short time in football.
Elliott, currently with England for the European Under-21 Championship, failed to make his mark as Liverpool won the league under Arne Slot last term. The Fulham academy product saw the start of his campaign disrupted by injury but ultimately made just two Premier League starts under the Dutchman, after the title was already sewn up.
And earning a place in Slot's side next term will not get any easier as the Reds make a splash in the transfer market. The Anfield side are looking to improve their hand with a blockbuster move for Florian Wirtz in the offing.
Elliott has accepted that, while looking to depart Anfield is a difficult decision, a transfer could be the best move for his career. The 22-year-old is keen to continue improving and noted he needs to reflect on his position at the club.
"It's just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about because I'm coming into an age now where I'm 22, I'm going to be 23 next season," he said.
"I don't really want to be wasting years of my career because it's a short career. You don't know what's going to happen.
"I need to reflect. I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing and how can I improve as a player because that's the most important thing.
"I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.
"Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career."
Elliott has already seen links to the likes of Newcastle and was even touted as a potential makeweight in a deal to bring Wirtz to Anfield. Bayer Leverkusen are said to hold an interest in him heading in the opposite direction if Wirtz makes the move.
Liverpool are expected to make a final offer to the Bundesliga side in order to find a compromise on a transfer fee. The Reds third official bid of £100million plus £13m in add-ons was knocked back as Leverkusen hold out for a total package nearer their £126.4m asking price.

Newcastle have also been linked with making a move, while Bayern Munich have been touted with a potential deal if Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman depart. Grealish has been told by England boss Thomas Tuchel that he must earn time on the pitch if he hopes to make the World Cup squad in 12 months time. The German coach said: 'I love Jack for his personality and of course his talent. He is a very unique player who can handle big pressure on the field. "He is never shy of pressure. It's the opposite. He grows in big matches but he's a player who needs minutes and minutes and minutes and simply does not get them for a very long time. That's basically everything. Nothing has changed. "I have maybe the same information as you that City are thinking of not taking him to the Club World Cup. So he needs to make himself available by playing. I think it's one of his key strengths. "To go every three days and get better and better with every minute that he has in his legs. That's what is missing, nothing else. I have spoken to him after the first international camp and very shortly after the FA Cup final but not since then.' Pep Guardiola agrees with the England boss' assessment. He said: 'Of course, Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, with us or another place. 'It's a question for Jack, his agent and the club. If he stays it will be fine and he will fight like he fought from day one to make a contribution, but not today.' Guardiola added: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. Trailblazer Uriah Rennie remembered as a ‘special person' and ‘true gentleman'
The trailblazing official was born in Jamaica before moving to Sheffield aged six with his family and went on to oversee more than 300 games between 1997 and 2008, including 175 in the English top flight. Once labelled the 'fittest' match official in world football, Rennie recently revealed he was learning to walk again after a rare neurological condition left him paralysed from the waist down. His death was announced on Sunday and Chris Foy, a fellow former Premier League referee, paid an emotional tribute to his ex-colleague in an interview with talkSPORT on Monday morning. 'He was a gentleman, a gentle giant,' Foy said. 'He was a friend to me, a mentor to me, he was just a special person who put everybody first before himself. 'He was a real presence on the field and he was a real presence off the field, a true gentleman. He had a great personality. It was the things off the field that made him special. The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Uriah Rennie. As the first black referee in the Premier League, Uriah was a pioneering trailblazer whose legacy will live on, continuing to inspire future generations. Reijnders is set to undergo his medical in the early part of this week. City have agreed a £46million fee with AC Milan for Reijnders to move to the Etihad Stadium. Should he pass his medical, Reijnders should become a City player in time to feature in the Club World Cup. The controversial tournament kicks off on Sunday when Al-Ahly face Inter Miami. City's campaign gets underway next Wednesday when they face Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia. They then take on UAE's Al-Ain in Atlanta on 23 June and Serie A giants Juventus in Orlando on 26 June in the group stages. They should make it through to the knockouts, with some tipping them to reach the final, which will take place on 13 July. Reijnders is eyeing the tournament as the perfect way to bed into his new club. The midfielder is currently on international duty with the Netherlands and admitted he is relishing the chance to make the move. He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "The medical tests? I couldn't wait any longer. The intention is to participate in the Club World Cup with City. I'm excited about it. "This way I can get to know my new teammates straight away. I'll return to Zeist on Sunday evening. Then I'll prepare for Tuesday's match against Malta." It's safe to say that not everyone is looking forward to the revamped tournament though. City have already played 57 games this season across the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup. With as many as seven more games still to play, then less than a month between the final and the new season kicking off, Reijnders' soon-to-be team-mate Manuel Akanji has insisted that the Club World Cup is needed about as much as a hole in the head. "I have been a strong critic of this competition for some time now. We players would love to have some holidays, and some time for our bodies to rest. My City teammates are not exactly overjoyed about the tournament either," he said recently. "But it's now right in our faces, and there is nothing we can do about it. If we take part, then of course we want to win it. But if we reach the final, then the time period for us to recover ahead of the new season will become even shorter. "Set against the expectations we have, this hasn't been a good season. We finished third in the Premier League, three points behind Arsenal, and qualified for the Champions League. "But it is still our worst campaign for some time. However, Pep Guardiola still said he was proud of us for never giving up. The season could have finished far worse than it did."
