Elena Rybakinas coach cleared by WTA Tour to return from suspension
Washington, Aug 9 (AP) The coach of 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has been cleared by the WTA Tour to return from his suspension for a potential breach of its code of conduct.
Stefano Vukov was provisionally suspended in January while the tour conducted an investigation. It announced in February that had been completed and that the ban remained in place, without saying how long it would last.
The organization said Friday that Vukov would again be permitted to receive credentials allowing him access to player areas and practice courts at its events.
'The WTA is fully committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all athletes and other participants, as set out in our WTA Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Code," the tour said in a statement. 'Any sanctions issued following a breach of these safeguarding rules are carefully considered and are subject to appeal before an independent tribunal. While case details remain confidential, we can confirm that Mr. Vukov is eligible to receive credentials at WTA events." The New York Times first reported that Vukov's ban had been lifted.
Rybakina announced before last year's U.S. Open that Vukov would no longer be her coach, but then said before the Australian Open that he would be rejoining her team. She insisted that he had never mistreated her during their time working together.
Rybakina, ranked No. 10 on the WTA Tour, just reached the semifinals of the National Bank Open in Montreal before losing to Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, the eventual champion. (AP) ATK

War within USA Swimming deepens as Michael Phelps accuses federation of treating him like ‘piece of meat': ‘Shoved us…'
Olympic legend Michael Phelps didn't hold back as he took a jibe at USA Swimming following the latter's public statement defending itself for the recent performance at the Aquatics World Championship in Singapore. The war has been brewing within US Swimming after Phelps and Ryan Lochte criticised the body after America's superiority in the pool was threatened. Michael Phelps hits back at US Swimming. (AP) The event in Singapore saw the USA lead the medal table. However, by the time the competition concluded, China had ended up as the table-toppers in the overall standings with the most gold medals (15) and overall medals (37). During the competition, Phelps and Lochte shared a meme on their social media handles showcasing the funeral of American swimming. Rowdy Gaines, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, also spoke up against USA Swimming and how the body was without a CEO, even though the next Olympics are in three years at home in Los Angeles. This led to USA Swimming responding with a statement, saying the body was "saddened and disappointed at the timing of the comments'. The statement was attributed to the interim CEO, Bob Vincent. 'We respect and value the opinions of Rowdy, Michael, Ryan, and all USA Swimming alums. We acknowledge that their comments come from a place of passion and genuine desire to see USA Swimming succeed. We are saddened and disappointed at the timing of the comments. The USA Swimming team battled severe illness in Singapore, and these comments added public scrutiny to an already challenging situation for our athletes and coaches," the statement read. "We are incredibly proud of the resilience of our team in the face of such difficult circumstances and remain confident in the leadership, strategic direction, and culture established by newly appointed National Team Managing Director Greg Meehan," the statement added. Michael Phelps reacts Reacting to the statement, Michael Phelps accused the USA federation of treating him like a "piece of meat" throughout his career. 'Maybe a false statement, because I know they didn't reach out to Rowdy. They've shoved us out the door for years. Treated me like a piece of meat throughout my career. Hopefully it changes someday,' Michael Phelps wrote in the comments section of an Instagram post made by Big Friendly Swim Podcast's account. America did not have a great time at the Paris Olympics in 2024, winning just eight gold medals, the lowest total since the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Their preparations for the World Championships were affected by the case of 'acute gastroenteritis'. Many athletes picked this up during a training camp in Thailand. Phelps and Lochte's criticism drew a sharp clap back from current American swimmer Lilly King. She tagged them on social media after a medal-winning night in Singapore, saying, "You have been real quiet tonight." Responding to this, Phelps wrote, "We should be so proud of how the team swam as a whole …. Right? Apologies for having higher expectations for the leadership of the team. My opinions were way off. USA Swimming has what they finally want: me to 'stay in my lane'. They will continue to help the kids reach childhood dreams by their continued support.'

Ex-IND Captain On Why Ashwin May Leave CSK: 'It's Corporate Cricket, Giving Crores...'
Last Updated: Ravichandran Ashwin's return to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 may be brief as he plans to leave after a tough season. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 saw veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returning to the Chennai Super Kings after 9 years. However, his homecoming may turn out to be short-lived. If the media reports are to be believed, Ashwin has informed the franchise about his intention to part ways with them before next season. Ashwin endured a difficult IPL 2025 campaign, managing only seven wickets in nine matches. Used extensively in the powerplay, he proved expensive with the ball. Even MS Dhoni admitted the franchise had 'not been fair" to Ashwin by asking him to operate in the powerplay when only two fielders are allowed outside the inner circle. Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes he understands why CSK may move on from Ashwin. In his latest YouTube video, Srikkanth opined that the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last two editions. Hence, the franchise needs to get some fresh faces into the squad. 'You've got to understand, it's franchise cricket. End of the day, it's not Tamil Nadu cricket, it's franchise cricket. All of us admire him for all the records he's created. He's done brilliantly for IPL, he's done brilliantly for CSK, he's done brilliantly for India, and he's done brilliantly for Tamil Nadu," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. 'But that doesn't mean they're going to win championships. If you look at the last two years, CSK didn't qualify. So, what did they do? They tried to pick the best team… they need to get some good bowlers. So, they'll obviously try to form a team that'll win a championship for them," he added. Srikkanth further stated that franchise cricket is similar to corporate cricket, which runs by the formula 'perform or perish'. 'Are you going to just sit there and say he's a legend of the game? You've got to understand, it's franchise cricket. He's not even in the Indian cricket team. They preferred Washington Sundar over him in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He's at the back end of his career," said Srikkanth. 'The point is, he's at the back end of his career. Poor fellow. He's done brilliantly. But in franchise cricket, it is bound to happen. It's a corporate cricket. The same corporate cricket is giving you crores of money. They are also rolling out so much money, no? They are giving you crores," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
