Woman, 84, dragged into alley and assaulted, Santa Monica police say; Long Beach man arrested
A man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting an 84-year-old Santa Monica woman.
In the incident earlier this month, the woman was heard screaming for help after the 39-year-old man dragged her into an alley, Santa Monica police said Tuesday.
Police responded at about 9:30 p.m. June 5 to the cries of the woman near the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and 6th Street, the police statement said.
"Upon arrival, officers located an 84-year-old Santa Monica resident who appeared to be in distress," police said. "The victim reported that she was approached and grabbed from behind by a male suspect who then dragged her into a nearby alley and attempted to sexually assault her."
The department said there were multiple witnesses at the scene who backed up the woman's statement and told officers the suspect fled to the north. Police were able to find and detain the suspect at 5th Street and California Avenue.
The suspect, Pape Tall of Long Beach, has been charged by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office with felony counts, including assault with intent to commit rape and kidnapping with intent to commit rape, police said.
Tall was charged on June 9. He is being held at Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles without bail. His next court date is scheduled for July 9 at the Airport Courthouse near Los Angeles International Airport.

Testimony begins in first-degree murder trial
Jun. 23—Testimony began Monday in the trial of a South Valley man who prosecutors say fatally shot 30-year-old Anjel Varela after conspiring with others to rob the victim outside a Northeast Albuquerque apartment complex. Bobby "Littles" Lopez, 30, is accused of shooting and killing Varela in his car after a robbery coordinated between Lopez, another woman and Varela's passenger went awry. Lopez has been charged in 2nd Judicial District Court with first-degree murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon. The trial is scheduled through Friday before Judge Emeterio Rudolfo. Authorities say that Lopez is a known member of Los Padillas, a South Valley gang with a longstanding history of homicide, drug trafficking and other offenses. Lopez's attorney, Sandra Gallagher, told jurors Monday that three key witnesses, Danielle "Foolish" Cordova, Brianna "Shorty" Garcia and Delilah Lopez, cut a deal with the state in exchange for reduced charges in Varela's killing. "When you make a deal with the state, you have to throw someone into that volcano," Gallagher said in opening statements. Garcia agreed to testify against Bobby Lopez when she pleaded guilty to numerous prior felony charges as well as second-degree murder, armed robbery and conspiracy, according to her 2023 plea agreement. Cordova also agreed to testify when she pleaded guilty to armed robbery and conspiracy in 2023, court records show. Similarly, Delilah Lopez's murder charges were dropped after entering a plea agreement in which she agreed to testify. Delilah Lopez is charged with armed robbery and conspiracy. All three had originally been charged with an open count of murder, robbery and conspiracy, the same charges that Bobby Lopez originally faced. Assistant District Attorney Christine Jablonsky said in opening statements that Garcia, spiteful over being sold "bad heroin" by Varela, orchestrated the armed robbery and enlisted Bobby Lopez. Garcia asked Varela for a ride and messaged Cordova on Facebook about the pair's whereabouts as they drove around Albuquerque, Jablonsky said. Garcia asked Varela to pull over at the Skyline Apartments on Louisiana and Mountain so she could use drugs, at which point Bobby Lopez, his girlfriend Delilah Lopez and Cordova parked nearby after tailing the pair across Albuquerque, Jablonsky said. Bobby Lopez posed as a member of Garcia's family and asked Varela to sell him drugs, she said. Once in the car, Bobby Lopez grabbed Varela's gun from his lap while Garcia took $80 and a dab kit, used for smoking cannabis, from the car, according to a criminal complaint filed in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court. Bobby Lopez then shot Varela in the back and he and Garcia left him slumped over and bleeding in his vehicle, Jablonsky told jurors. Varela's girlfriend, Clarissa Sanchez, took the stand Monday and tearfully recalled finding his body. "I put my hand on his chest, I felt how cold he was and I knew he was dead," Sanchez said.

Crowds of people scattered from Big League Dreams in Chino Hills on Monday after false reports of an active shooter in the area. A massive contingent of law enforcement officers rushed to the park, located in the 16000 block of Fairfield Ranch Road, at around 7:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a man who was armed with a gun. "So far, deputies have not located a crime scene, a suspect or any witnesses who actually saw the man with a gun," San Bernardino County deputies told CBS News Los Angeles. This was followed by widespread panic amongst the hundreds in attendance. "There was a whole bunch of commotion, people running from everywhere. it was panic, nobody really knew what was going on," said Charlie Herd. "It was pandemonium. It was nuts. It was terrifying, very terrifying for all the kids that are here. this is going to be embedded in their memories for a very long time. It's a very sad and unfortunate event." Herd said that he and his family were there for a baseball game. "Not something at all we were expecting coming to a fun, family, baseball event, where it's just supposed to be a good time for everybody," he said. Big League Dreams is a well-known complex of baseball stadiums, each of which is modeled after a Major League Baseball stadium. Some of the replica fields include Fenway Park, Wrigley Field and Ebbets Field. It was opened in 2003 and has since seen thousands of games and tournaments.

Sheriff's Office: Woman missing from Staunton
The Augusta County Sheriff's Office said a Staunton woman has been listed as missing, a press release said. The woman, 40-year-old Megan N. Thomas, has been missing since June 11. A family member reported her missing on June 22. Thomas is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. She has blonde hair and blue eyes, the release said. Her whereabouts are unknown.
