An Erie woman was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after city firefighters rescued her from her burning home on East Seventh Street Aug. 18.
The woman, whom authorities said is in her 40s, was taken to UPMC Hamot and then flown to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh after Erie Bureau of Fire crews rescued her from a second-floor bedroom at 719 E. Seventh St., said Don Sauer, the city fire bureau's chief fire marshal. Information on the woman's condition was not available Aug. 18.
The fire at the 2 1/2-story house was reported at about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 18. Sauer said firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing, and neighbors reported several people might be inside the home. The woman was the only person home at the time, he said.
The fire caused heavy damage to the front of the house. The fire's cause was under investigation Aug. 18, according to Sauer.
Red Cross assisting family in East Avenue fire
Hours before the East Seventh Street fire was reported, Erie firefighters were called to a two-story, single-family home in the 900 block of East Avenue to put out a fire reported at about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 17.
The residence was occupied by five people who escaped the fire uninjured, according to city fire officials.
Sauer said the fire was set off by an electrical problem and started on the second floor before spreading to the attic and roof.
