Putting trigger warnings on George Orwell's 1984 is the most stupid, 1984ish thing ever
What, after all, could be more of a validation, a rubber-stamping, and an 'I told you so' – delivered through a megaphone – than a thoughtcrime conviction for a futuristic cautionary tale… about thoughtcrimes, published 76 years ago?
In the introductory essay featured in the new 75th anniversary edition, US novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez describes the book's protagonist, Winston Smith, as 'problematic'. So much so that it may once have led to her abandoning the book, she admits. Warning modern readers that they may find his views on women 'despicable', she writes: 'For example, we learn of him, 'He disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones.'' Whoa, wait a minute, Orwell.
There's so much to unpack here. First, that with everything currently going on in the world – you know, the rise of modern totalitarianism, technology spying on us and all that – Winston Smith's view of women should be the main area of focus. Second, that word 'problematic', which almost always precedes something cretinous, but in this context was genuinely baffling.
Name one successful novel, TV show or film that doesn't feature a 'problematic' character, and I will show you something I have no interest in reading or watching. Do you know anybody who enjoys reading about nice, blameless people going about their nice, blameless lives? I don't.
Also, by all means, find Smith's views of women despicable – when you start reading the book, but not before. If and when you are appalled by his behaviour, let that not be off-putting, but a jumping-off point for meaty discussions; an opening up of your mind to human complexities.
Someone who has been eloquent on this subject is the British Museum's brilliant new director, Nicholas Cullinan. Asked recently whether he agreed with the idea of trigger warnings and apologies on museum labels, Cullinan replied: 'Labels should be accurate, not partisan or political or conforming to a contemporary fad.'
For me, the most extraordinary aspect of trigger warnings has always been their pomposity: the implicit conviction that in 2025, our view is not only more enlightened than any view that came before, but the final word on the subject. Unlike Orwell's, I suspect that those words will look embarrassingly outdated in just a couple of years.

Christine Baranski took aim at Gayle King and Katy Perry over their Jeff Bezos-funded trip to space as she sneered at modern corruption. The Mamma Mia star, 73, addressed the widely-mocked Blue Origin trip to space while speaking on a panel on Monday about her hit HBO show, The Gilded Age. The actress was making a point about how The Gilded Age gives viewers a glimpse into the huge gap between the nation's wealthiest and poorest. 'The grotesque displays of wealth sending women into a spaceship for what? so they can do their makeup? What the f**k?' Baranski said of the all-female flight into orbit, which also included Bezos' wife Lauren Sanchez. 'Don't get me started,' Baranski added, exasperated. The Blue Origin crew was criticized for their flight into orbit, which did not have a scientific purpose. Gaye King and CBS were also slammed for the gushing and glossy coverage on the network, as it was unclear who - if anyone - footed the bill for the expedition. Non-celebrities face a $300,000 fare to make the same trip. Bezos got huge exposure for his fledgling space exploration company and was seen opening the capsule door to welcome his friends back to Earth. Breathtaking footage showed King and other celebrities including Sanchez and Perry screaming while weightless and peering into the vast emptiness of space. The flight itself lasted just 11 minutes, but there was plenty of build-up to blast-off and excitement after the A-List crew touched back down in West Texas, with CBS alumnus Oprah Winfrey among those waiting to greet the crew. King responded to critics who called the trip a 'space ride ', saying it was sexist to describe it in such a way. 'They call it a ride, which I find very irritating because they never say men went for a ride,' King, 70, said. Responding to accusations that the suborbital flight had no real scientific purpose, King spoke with fellow crewmate, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe on CBS Mornings. 'There's so many things that have been developed in space that benefit Earth... from pharmaceuticals to, like, research on agriculture,' Bowe said. 'And, you know, I paused there because we did research and it was emotional... Part of what I accomplished in my flight was I was looking at the future of being able to produce crops that can withstand harsh environments so we can look at food security here on Earth, and simultaneously, we also were able to certify that device so more people could do research on New Shepard.' It is unclear what specific research Bowe conducted, but footage of the flight showed the all-female crew floating, marveling at the view, and holding personal items. 'Slimmed down' Travis Kelce will be a threat again in the NFL next season, warns his mom Donna
Travis Kelce 's mom, Donna, has issued a warning to the rest of the NFL after revealing that her son has 'slimmed down' ahead of his 13th season in the league. Kelce is gearing up for another year with Kansas City after missing out on Super Bowl glory in February before enjoying the off-season with girlfriend Taylor Swift. While some - namely, Dave Portnoy - believe that Kelce's focus has been away from football in recent months, the Chiefs star's mother has said otherwise. In an interview with People, Donna Kelce said: 'This is going to be, I think, a different year for him. He really hunkered down and did a lot of training in the off-season. 'He's faster now than he's been in the last four years. He's really slimmed down a little bit and it just makes it easier than carrying all that load, like running and stuff like that'. While Kelce has typically taken himself to train in Los Angeles during the off-season, this year, he returned to South Florida to work alongside speed-and-agility coach Tony Villani in Fort Lauderdale. Donna warned that Kelce has 'slimmed down' ahead of his 13th season in the league She continued: 'I know that he wants to get back to the Super Bowl desperately. So does everybody else on the Chiefs. Meanwhile, in that same GQ interview, Kelce opened up for the first time on the impact of the split between his parents, Donna and Ed. The NFL star's parents broke up when Travis and his older brother Jason were at college in Cincinnati and they have openly admitted staying together longer than they wanted in order to be the best parents possible. In the interview, Kelce recalls sensing his parents had drifted before what he thinks was their 20th wedding anniversary. 'I don't want to get this wrong, it had to be around 20 (20th wedding anniversary),' Kelce said, explaining that his parents' anniversary date had been marked down on a calendar in the Kelce family kitchen. 'I remember seeing it and I was like, 'Oh, it's their anniversary. I wonder what they're going to do.' And it was kind of just another day almost. Another day of knocking out things for the kids. 'I'm sure my father probably did something, he's always been very good at making sure we celebrate our mother when it's Mother's Day and all that. He still to this day will text, like, 'Hey, it's your mom's birthday coming up. Don't forget about it'. But I never saw the romance of it all.'
