Biaggio Ali Walsh gets support from Muslim community ahead of SmartCage return
DUBAI: Undefeated fighter Biaggio Ali Walsh has revealed how the Muslim community in Las Vegas, Nevada, is supporting him ahead of his highly anticipated return to the Professional Fighters League's SmartCage.

Family, friends and members of the community gathered at Masjid As-Sabur, the oldest mosque in Las Vegas, on June 13 to show their support for Walsh ahead of his upcoming fight — a showcase lightweight bout against Ronnie Gibbs on June 27, which is part of the 2025 PFL World Championship semifinals, at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.
Walsh explained: 'Some people from the community, family and friends, came and helped, supporting my fight coming up.
'I'm just super grateful for all the love and support; I feel it radiating throughout me.'
It was a special night of fellowship as everyone prayed, enjoyed food, and wished Walsh well.
Walsh, who is the grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, spoke about the importance of faith and how essential it is to have a deep relationship with God.
He said: 'Faith is everything in life, period. I feel like if you have good faith and deep faith in God and trust God, you can do anything.
'It's everything, it's the only thing I know, and that's the only thing that helps calm me before these kinds of fights.'
He added: 'I'm really excited for the fight … thank you guys so much for coming out, and inshallah, I will come back victorious.'
Initially making waves as a standout collegiate football player, the 26-year old found his way to mixed martial arts and ultimately made the full-time leap.
It was this transition to combat sports that, he said, helped strengthen his faith and his relationship with God.
In 2024, shortly after turning pro in MMA, Walsh deepened his devotion by partaking in Umrah, the spiritual journey to Makkah.
Coming from a family of elite fighters, it is no surprise that Walsh is making an impact on the MMA scene.
In addition to the Muhammad Ali connection, Walsh's aunt is world champion boxer Laila Ali. His younger brother Nico is also a professional boxer.
Now with a 2-0 record in his professional MMA career, Walsh is determined to carry on the Ali legacy into a new era — and with faith, family, and community behind him, he has never been more ready.

Cal Poly's Swimming and Diving Programs Won't Be Reinstated Despite Fundraising Efforts
A fundraising campaign to save the recently eliminated Cal Poly men's and women's swimming and diving programs came up short, and the programs will not be reinstated, university president Jeffrey D. Armstrong announced this week. The school announced the elimination of the programs in March, citing the financial hardships expected to arrive next month when schools can begin sharing revenue with athletes. The Save Cal Poly Swim and Dive group was formed to try and save the programs. It's unclear how much the group raised, but Armstrong said in a statement it wasn't enough. 'I appreciate the efforts of many to attempt to raise the permanent funds needed to reinstate the swimming and diving programs at Cal Poly,' he said. 'While I appreciate the significant annual support and revocable bequests that have been identified, the fundraising effort has fallen well short of the goal to reinstate the program. As a result, the university is unable to reinstate the swimming and diving programs.' He added that they extended the deadline and lowered the amount needed to give them a chance to save the programs. 'The university made several changes in good faith throughout the effort, including implementing multiple extensions to the deadline dates and lowering the threshold of permanent funds for an endowment to the absolute minimum that would be required to realistically support the programs,' he said. The school said in March that athletes who were impacted by the elimination of the programs would have their scholarships honored as long as they are at Cal Poly or they can enter the transfer portal. Coaches did not have their contracts renewed after they expired in April. The school, a member of the Big West Conference, will sponsor 20 sports going forward. The House settlement, which was approved June 6, is expected to financially benefit football and basketball stars at the biggest schools who are likely to receive a big chunk of the 20.5 million per year that colleges are permitted to share with athletes over the next year. Schools across the country are deciding which sports to keep. Armstrong said the move was difficult but that it was unavoidable. 'This is an unfortunate reality given the approved NCAA House settlement, state budget and the tenuous situation moving forward for both the state and the NCAA,' he said. 'I want to reiterate that the significant and unequitable changes in the NCAA and the House settlement (and new organizations resulting from this settlement) had an impact that weighed heavily in this decision.'

Patty Gasso To Make Broadcast Debut For Athletes Unlimited Softball League
There's not much Patty Gasso hasn't done in the softball world, but she's found something new to try. The US national coach, who has led the University of Oklahoma to eight national titles, will be on a broadcast team for the first time. She will assist Amanda Scarborough, Chuckie Kempf, and Savanna Collins when the Talons play the Volts in an Athletes Unlimited Softball League game Friday in Norman, Oklahoma. Gasso, who has coached at Oklahoma since 1995, is taking advantage of the fact that the AUSL is using a traveling format in its first year and is visiting Oklahoma's home field for a series. She's excited about the opportunity to help with a game that will broadcast on and several regional affiliates and feels she'd regret not giving it a shot. 'It's something that I would wonder if I would be good at or if it's something I might try to do in the future,' she said. 'So that intrigues me a little bit. But I just like to talk softball. And normally I'm in the middle of it, so I'm not really able to talk about it.' Gasso said she sees the action differently now that she'll guide Team USA into the 2028 Summer Olympics. 'Now there's a different kind of interest,' she said. 'Now I'm watching and going, 'Okay, I see what we could do to help this certain athlete. I see something they're doing maybe in their swing that we know we could help.'' Gasso will be watching three of her former Oklahoma players. Sydney Romero plays for the Talons, and Tiare Jennings and Sam Landry play for the Volts. Landry, the No. 1 pick in the AUSL draft, led the Sooners to the Women's College World Series semifinals earlier this month. Gasso said she's been watching the league closely and studies each game. She likes the fact that Athletes Unlimited added a season with a traditional format to its season with an individual scoring format, giving her a better idea of how the best players compete in a team format at the pro level. 'They care,' she said. 'They care about winning. And that allows you to watch a good product because they're all fighting for it. They're fighting for something. And I never felt that until really AUSL came into the equation and had great structure.' Part of that structure comes from USA Softball's support. Craig Cress, USA Softball's CEO, said Gasso adds to that. 'What her and her staff have done in Oklahoma and what they bring and what I've already seen us be able to do with some of the stuff that we've done with national team athletes already – we're just really lucky that she has that same great desire to be a part of our program as she does to be an Oklahoma Sooner,' Cress said.
