Indo-Pak tensions: PSBs fortified ops in sensitive areas along border

In the midst of ceasfire with Pakistan and its violation by the neighbouring country, branches of public-sector banks (PSBs) in bordering states have ramped up preparedness with cash and defences against cyberattacks.
Senior officials in at least four PSBs and one small finance bank with a strong presence in these regions said there had been a significant inflow of cash, prompting intensified efforts to ensure its availability.
'We are adhering to the directives of the local administration regarding operating hours. Additionally, we are taking steps to ensure adequate cash availability at both ATMs and bank branches,' said a public-sector banker.
Last Friday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked banks and financial institutions to ensure that all digital and core banking infrastructure was firewalled and monitored round the clock to prevent breaches or hostile cyberattacks.
Banks such as Punjab & Sind Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, and Punjab National Bank have asked their circle heads to stay in their zonal offices.
Some banks have been asked to operate during weekends.
'We have strengthened our cybersecurity systems to counter cyberattacks. A 24-hour war room has been established, and our teams are working on all intelligence inputs,' said Ashok Chandra, managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO), Punjab National Bank, in a statement to Business Standard.
Chandra added special instructions had been given to branches near border areas to ensure employee safety and keep ATMs stocked with cash.
Another senior banker in a PSB noted vigilance had been heightened in anticipation of cyber threats. 'We need to stay alert regarding cyberattacks,' the banker said.
Meanwhile, bankers also highlighted a surge in cash inflow in border states owing to wheat harvesting in the Kharif season.
'Given our strong presence in rural and semiurban areas, and with wheat harvesting underway, there has been a healthy inflow of funds. On March 31, our deposits stood at ₹8,323 crore, and as on May 9, they rose to ₹8,790 crore. This increase is primarily due to seasonal inflows. We have ATMs at every branch and are ensuring they remain fully stocked with cash,' said Sarvjit Singh Samra, MD and CEO, Capital Small Finance Bank.
According to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh together accounted for 12.81 per cent of India's bank deposits — ₹26.21 trillion — and 13.41 per cent of advances — ₹22.13 trillion — as of March 2024.
An internal letter on May 1 from Punjab & Sind Bank, reviewed by Business Standard, stated: 'As a critical sector entity, it is imperative that we take all necessary steps to prevent service disruptions and ensure business continuity. In the event of any untoward incident, field staff should remain calm and report immediately to the head office.'

PNB cuts lending rate to 50 basis point in line with RBI's policy

Hours after RBI's jumbo rate cut, state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) on Friday announced up to 50 basis points reduction in lending rate, a move which will help existing and new borrowers. Other banks are also expected to make similar announcements soon. "Great News for Our Valued Customers! Punjab National Bank Makes Your EMIs More Affordable! Following the repo rate cut (6.00% - 5.50%), Punjab National Bank has reduced its RLLR by 50 bps, effective from June 9, 2025," PNB said in a post on X. With the reduction in the benchmark repo-linked benchmark lending rates (RBLR), the home loan of the bank will start from 7.45 per cent while vehicle loans from 7.8 per cent per annum. Earlier in the day, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut interest rates by a larger-than-expected 50 basis points, and unexpectedly reduced the cash reserve ratio for banks to make available more money to lend in a bid to boost the economy. The RBI's six-member monetary policy committee, headed by Governor Sanjay Malhotra and consisting of three external members, voted five to one to lower the benchmark repurchase or repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5 per cent. It also cut the cash reserve ratio by 100 basis points to 3 per cent, adding Rs 2.5 lakh crore to already surplus liquidity in the banking system. With the latest reduction, the RBI has now cut interest rates by a total of 100 basis points in 2025, starting with a quarter-point reduction in February -- the first cut since May 2020 -- and another similar-sized cut in April. The central bank, at the same time, changed its monetary policy stance from 'accommodative' to 'neutral', meaning rates could increase or decrease in future depending on incoming data, with Malhotra stating that it may have limited space for further easing.

State govt. has neither shirked responsibility nor is defending stampede: Priyank Kharge

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Priyank Kharge clarified that the State government has neither shirked responsibility nor is defending the stampede that occurred during the RCB victory celebrations at Bengaluru on Wednesday evening (June 4, 2025) in which 11 people died. 'We are all pained by the deaths of youths, and the tragic incident is not a matter of pride for any government,' he grieved. Addressing presspersons in Kalaburagi city on Friday Mr. Kharge reiterated that he was not defending the stampede incident and claimed that there were lapses in planning on the part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)-the cricket team of IPL, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI). If there was any faults on the government's part, the investigation will unearth the truth, he added. He explained that, citing security concerns the State government had denied permission for the victory parade, and the BJP leaders objected to this decision and tweeted against it-which they later deleted. He urged BJP not stoop so low to politicise the tragic incident. 'The State government has expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and announced compensation, meanwhile a judicial magistrate inquiry is underway and even the police officials have been suspended,' Mr. Kharge added. Responding sharply to BJP's demand for the resignation of the Home Minister G. Parameshwara, Mr. Kharge stated that similar standards must apply to all incidents and he questioned whether anyone had demanded the resignation of the Union Home Minister or the External Affairs Minister over the recent Pahalgam terror attack incident. Crop Insurance The Minister said that the State government had released a crop insurance of ₹341 crore for Kalaburagi district during the last monsoon season, the Congress-led State government was fully committed for furthering the welfare of farmers, and we have prioritized increasing the number of farmers covered under the insurance scheme, he said. State may face DAP shortage Mr. Kharge cautioned that the State may face shortage of DAP this Kharif season, as Karnataka has received only 42% of the required quantity of the fertilizer so far. He alleged that the Central government has diverted our share to Bihar, and our Agriculture Minister (N. Cheluvarayaswamy) has been in talks with the central government regarding the necessary supply of fertilizers, he said. Photos: Priyank_Kharge_(1) Priyank_Kharge_(2)\ Priyank_Kharge_(3)
