Teenager on school outing missing at Durban beach
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the teenager was believed to be part of a local school outing when he went missing around 18:08.
The NSRI Durban duty crew, KZN Surf Rescue Network, Police Search and Rescue, Metro Police Search and Rescue, and the SA Police Services responded swiftly to the scene.
The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 was launched, and an extensive sea and shoreline search was conducted throughout the night.
Despite their efforts, no sign of the missing teen has been found.
The search resumed on Saturday morning and remains ongoing.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and the SAPS have launched an investigation.
'Thoughts, care and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing teenager during this incredibly difficult time,' the NSRI said in a statement.
Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact local authorities.

And this is delaying the return of some of the mine's operations back to normal, with mineworkers fearing for their safety. Over 500 zama-zamas have been arrested in the last week, as part of Operation Vala uMgodi. They were charged for contravention of South African immigration act and trespassing, while others faced charges for possession of gold bearing material. On Monday, the 4th of August, mine management told eNCA that there are no longer illegal miners underground. At the time, a large number of illegal miners, the majority of whom were undocumented foreign nationals, appeared in the Barberton Magistrate's court READ: Sheba Mine owners call for help as Zama-Zama activities continue One illegal miner told eNCA that some of his colleagues remain underground, and will only surface once they get paid what they are owed. Some in the community, say illegal mining has been allowed to thrive for years, and blame mine management, accusing it of enabling these activities. There is still no comprehensive government plan to deal with this problem, that attracts zama-zamas miners from around the SADC region. What is also worrying is the recruitment of children to work underground, six of whom have been discovered in Barberton. It's a problem that involves Police, Mineral Resources, Home Affairs and Social Development Services, requiring the cooperation of these government departments. Until then, Operation Vala uMgodi, in collaboration with Sheba Mine private security continue to monitor the situation at the mine.

Police offer R300 000 reward for information on cop killers
Police have announced a R300 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of suspects in the murders of three police officers in two separate shootings within 24 hours. On Friday, 8 August 2025, gunmen ambushed and killed two detectives from the Johannesburg Trio Task Team while they transported awaiting trial prisoner Jabulani Moyo from the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court back to prison. The suspects disarmed Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa, 51, and Sergeant Simon Masenye, 45, before shooting them. Moyo was last seen driving the abandoned police vehicle, which police later found several kilometres from the crime scene. National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola visited the families of the slain detectives on Saturday. He condemned the murders as a direct attack on the authority of the state and the rule of law. Masemola revealed that criminals killed 27 police officers in the last financial year and that six officers have already died in the line of duty since 1 April 2025. 'These were not just numbers,' he said. 'They were mothers and fathers, breadwinners, and dedicated officers who laid down their lives to protect the people of South Africa.' Masemola warned that the country could not remain silent while criminals wage war on the state. He urged police officers to act decisively when necessary, always applying force proportional to the threat. 'Do not let your guard down,' he said. 'Be a step ahead of these criminals to ensure the safety and security of the public.' The Hawks are leading the investigation into the detectives' murders. Masemola said investigators are analysing witness statements and evidence from a filling station where the shootings took place. He confirmed that a multidisciplinary team, led by crime intelligence, is searching for Moyo. Masemola said investigators are probing whether Moyo was handcuffed during transport and why officers used a sedan instead of a police van. 'Our focus remains on finding Moyo,' he said. 'He has answers we need, and we will not rest until we find him.' Police are offering two separate R150 000 cash rewards, one for information leading to Moyo's arrest and another for the capture of at least 10 suspects involved in the murder of 47-year-old Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni. Action Society calls for urgent action on violence against women in South Africa Image: Supplied Action Society released a statement on Women's Day, asserting that the widespread violence against South African women should be considered an act of terror, rather than merely crime. Citing the latest SAPS Crime Statistics, the rights group warned that behind the speeches and tributes, millions of South African women are not celebrating - they are surviving. The press release noted that, in the SAPS Crime Statistics covering 1 October to 31 December 2024, violence against women remains alarmingly high. 961 women murdered - about 11 per day, 320 per month, 11,803 women raped - about 131 per day, 3,934 per month, 16,023 women assaulted with grievous bodily harm, about 174 per day and 5,341 per month. Action Society strongly felt that these figures only reflect reported cases. 'Thousands more remain hidden in silence, fear, or distrust of a system that too often fails them,' read the statement. By comparison, the group said that terrorism kills around 1,667 people per month globally. 'South African women alone face over 9,500 violent attacks every month, yet there is no war room, no emergency deployment, and no national mobilisation,' it contended. 'This Women's Day, we cannot simply honour women with words,' said Juanita du Preez, spokesperson for Action Society. 'We must defend their right to safety and dignity with decisive action. Silence protects the predator, not the victim.' Du Preez reiterated the group's stance, stating that the statistics demand more than rhetoric and commemorations.
