Injury-depleted Galaxy remain winless after shutout loss to St. Louis City
Cedric Teuchert, Marcel Hartel and Simon Becher scored the first goals of the season for St. Louis, which began with two scoreless draws before this win over the Galaxy that was less one-sided than the score.
Burki was outstanding in his 18th career shutout for St. Louis, turning away every scoring attempt by the injury-depleted Galaxy. The standout Swiss keeper had to make just one save in St. Louis' first two games combined.
The defending champions have scored just one goal in their three losses without star playmaker Riqui Puig and rampaging forward Joseph Paintsil. Both key components of last year's team are out indefinitely with significant injuries, and L.A. has been unable to compensate even though healthy stars Gabriel Pec and Marco Reus repeatedly created scoring chances against St. Louis.
Christian Ramírez had the Galaxy's best chance in the first half, but Burki saved his left-footed shot in the box.
Teuchert got St. Louis on the board in the 44th minute, banging home a rebound after a scramble in L.A.'s box.
Hartel then connected a few minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Teuchert and beating Novak Micovic in the top left corner.
Pec missed a golden chance in the 64th minute, failing to hit a fairly open net after a setup from Reus. In the 74th minute, Reus got a free kick past the St. Louis wall from just outside the penalty area, but Burki swatted it away.
Becher scored in the 84th minute.

Another Lakers game during NBA's opening week has been announced
The Los Angeles Lakers will open up the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season on Tuesday, Oct. 21, by hosting Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. That game is the second game of a doubleheader on the first night of the regular season schedule league-wide. The Lakers will also reportedly head to Northern California and take on the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, Oct. 26. On Wednesday, the NBA unveiled every nationally televised game that will take place during the first week of the regular season, and it revealed that L.A. will host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, Oct. 24. That contest will be shown on Amazon Prime Video. The Timberwolves, of course, knocked the Lakers out of the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs in five games. They exposed L.A.'s very weak center rotation, which featured Jaxson Hayes, who is best suited to being a backup, and a number of forwards who were forced to masquerade as small-ball centers. That resulted in L.A. getting badly outrebounded. But this coming season, the Lakers will have Deandre Ayton, who has career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds a game, starting at the 5. They will also be able to deploy former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart on budding superstar Anthony Edwards, who went off for 43 points in Game 4 of that first-round playoff series in May. The full regular-season schedule for all 30 teams will be released on Thursday, Aug. 14.

Colin Cowherd doesn't think Rams will win NFC West
The Los Angeles Rams will defend their NFC West title for the first time since 2022. L.A. finished third and second in the two years following their Super Bowl win, but returned to the top of the division in 2024. But while the Rams kept most of their roster intact for 2025, the Herd's Colin Cowherd isn't too confident in L.A.'s ability to repeat as division champions. He picked the Seattle Seahawks to win the NFC West and put the Rams at No. 2. His biggest worries stem from the offensive line. Left tackle Alaric Jackson is still dealing with blood clots, while right tackle Rob Havenstein is 33 and could be playing his last NFL season. It doesn't help, either, that Matthew Stafford is still not practicing with a back injury. Cowherd still has the Rams making the playoffs as the No. 7 seed, but that doesn't inspire much confidence for a team that was a few plays away from the NFC Championship game a year ago and went toe-to-toe with the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles.
