Stefanos Tsitsipas has 'no confidence in my forehand' after Madrid defeat

The National30-04-2025

Stefanos Tsitsipas gave a brutally honest assessment of the state of his game, admitting he has 'no confidence' in his forehand and that his shots are 'really average right now'. Since he stormed to the Dubai title two months ago with a new racquet and renewed motivation, Tsitsipas hasn't made it past the quarter-finals in any of the five tournaments he has contested, including a third-round exit to Lorenzo Musetti in Madrid on Tuesday. The Greek has been a regular fixture in the top 10 for the majority of the past six years but is currently down to No 18 in the world – his lowest ranking since August 2018. Tsitsipas is considered one of the best clay-courters of his generation and is a former French Open finalist and a three-time Monte Carlo champion. Following his second loss to Musetti in 18 days, Tsitsipas opened up to reporters at the Caja Magica about his current struggles. 'I feel like I have no confidence in my forehand, which is weird. It's not something that I'm used to. I feel like my shots are really average right now,' said the 26-year-old. 'They're not what they used to be, so it's kind of frustrating to see that.' Tsitsipas, who won his first five meetings with Musetti before dropping the last two, said the Italian did a much better job than him at finding the angles with his shots en route to a 7-5, 7-6(3) win. 'I was worried during the match because I knew that I'm not able to recreate that. This is something that I'm not used to. I feel like I've been doing this quite well in the past and I've kind of lost it,' said Tsitsipas. 'The practice sessions haven't been amazing. I'm just striving for something better. 'I'm hoping that I can at least feel that I'm doing something with the ball when it comes to me. I feel like I'm not doing enough. It comes out too flat, not enough rotation, not enough power at times. It's kind of frustrating to not be able to correct that.' Tsitsipas acknowledges that he made some progress on the return, but feels he's not pressing enough and doesn't have an immediate plan on how he can fix the issue. 'I'm a bit lost right now. I need to take some time and think what should be followed next,' he confessed. Musetti, who has now faced Tsitsipas on seven occasions, believes his rival's problem is more mental than technical. 'I feel that maybe he doesn't have that level of confidence that he probably had before in the past meetings. But of course he has had a good start of the season, winning in Dubai,' Musetti told The National on Wednesday. 'So I think it's just a matter of time to try to get back to the level where he is supposed to be. But I don't think it's a problem of level, it's a problem for him to find himself.'

Man City sign Dutch midfielder Reijnders ahead of Club World Cup

Manchester City confirmed the signing of midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan on a five-year contract on Wednesday and said the Netherlands international will be available for this month's Club World Cup. Financial details were not released but a City team source has put the transfer fee at 55 million euros ($62.85 million). "City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities. Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles, and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years," Reijnders said in a statement. "It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League. This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it's an inspiration to follow in their footsteps. " The 26-year-old, who has been capped 23 times, joined Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract before extending it until 2030 in March. He made 104 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning the Italian Super Cup and was named Serie A's best midfielder last season. "He arrives here with extensive top-level experience in Europe both at club level as well as on the international stage with the Netherlands," City's Director of Football Hugo Viana said. Reijnders is City's fourth addition of the transfer window after left back Rayan Ait-Nouri, winger Rayan Cherki and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. The expanded 32-team Club World Cup runs from June 14 to July 13 in the United States with $1 billion in prize money at stake.

Epic Tennis

Congratulations to Carlos Alcaraz for his remarkable bounce back, from two sets to nil down to take the next three sets to win the French Open against the world number One, Jannak Sinner. It was an epic encounter which went for nearly six hours, which I feel may be a World Record in Tennis history. I remember the epic Wimbledon Finals match of 2008 between the then World No.1 Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, which too went for nearly five hours, before Nadal prevailed over Federer to lift his maiden Wimbledon title. Though Nadal had taken the first two sets, Federer bounced back to win the next two to level two all. But the young and energetic Nadal prevailed over Federer during the deciding set and lifted the trophy. These matches were real treat to the Tennis fans all over the World. Inter appoint former player Chivu as manager

PIERO CRUCIATTI / AFP Inter Milan appointed Cristian Chivu as coach on Monday in place of Simone Inzaghi who left following the Italian side's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain, with their former player signing a two-year deal. Romanian Chivu, who left Parma after less than four months in charge, played as a defender for Inter for seven years and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side in 2010 before ending his playing career at the Serie A club in 2014. "In February 2025, Cristian was given his first opportunity to coach a senior side at Parma... He led the Emilians to safety, with the team picking up 16 points from 13 matches under his guidance," Inter said in a statement. "Now, Cristian Chivu is beginning the third chapter of his Nerazzurri story. And he's doing so with the values that have always guided him: dedication, sacrifice and a tireless work ethic." Chivu's second Inter chapter started in 2018 when he returned, moving up through the ranks to manage the youth team and winning the league title in his first season in charge. Although Chivu lacks the experience that Inzaghi brought to the role, the 44-year-old made an immediate impact at Parma by shoring up a defence which had been leaking goals, with his side conceding only 13 compared to 27 in the previous 13 games. Parma performed better against the bigger sides under Chivu, beating Juventus, Bologna and Atalanta while earning draws against Inter, Lazio and Napoli. Chivu's Parma also did Inter a huge favour on the penultimate matchday with a 0-0 draw against Napoli, but Inzaghi's side failed to take advantage, conceding a late penalty in a 2-2 draw with Lazio, and Napoli went on to become champions. Inzaghi, who led Inter to the Scudetto in the previous campaign, ended last season trophyless, losing to neighbours AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final, and the campaign ended with the humiliating loss to PSG in Munich. Three days after that defeat, Inzaghi left Inter after four years at the helm, and joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal the next day. Chivu's first challenge is the Club World Cup where Inter begin the tournament on June 17 when they take on Mexico's Monterrey in Los Angeles followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate.
