SD Guthrie's Q1 earnings meet expectations; HLIB ups forecasts on normalisation outlook

KUALA LUMPUR: SD Guthrie Bhd's earnings in the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (Q1 2025) came in within research firms' expectations, as its earnings are expected to normalise in coming quarters due to lower crude palm oil (CPO) prices.
Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd (HLIB) raised its earnings forecasts for the company by 4.8 per cent, 6.4 per cent and 4.5 per cent for financial years 2025 (FY25), FY26 and FY27, respectively.
The higher forecasts reflect higher pre-tax earnings margin assumptions for SD Guthrie at the downstream segment and the recalibration of the earnings model.
It also remained optimistic on the company achieving fresh fruit bunch (FFB) output growth for FY25, driven primarily by sustained recovery in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
"That said, uncertainties persist over the pace of recovery for Malaysia due to continued adverse weather conditions," said the firm.
HLIB maintained a 'Buy' call on the stock with a higher target price (TP) of RM5.17.
SD Guthrie's net profit in Q1 2025 more than doubled to RM550 million, boosted mainly by marginally higher FFB output, higher realised palm product prices, and lower finance costs.
In a separate note, RHB Investment Bank Bhd (RHB Research) also considered SD Guthrie's earnings to be in line with its expectations in light of the moderating CPO prices.
It noted output should improve in the coming quarter ahead of the peak output season in the second half of 2025.
"We still like SD Guthrie for its new earnings catalyst, coming from land monetisation and the renewables segment," it said.
It added that SD Guthrie's downstream margin slipped to 1.8 per cent in quarter-on-quarter, mainly due to weaker profits at its bulk segment as a result of margin compression and lower demand.
"While SD Guthrie expects margins to recover in the coming quarters, we choose to remain wary and trim our FY25-27 margin assumption accordingly."
The firm maintained 'Buy' on SD Guthrie with a TP of RM5.65.
Meanwhile, CIMB Securities maintained its earnings forecasts for SD Guthrie, which took into account weaker earnings in the upcoming quarters.
It said that the CPO price for July delivery on the Bursa Derivatives market is currently trading at RM3,754 per tonne, which is about 17 per cent lower than the RM4,576 per tonne achieved by SD Guthrie in Q1 2025.
Given the lack of near-term catalysts, the firm downgraded its call on the stock to 'Hold' from 'Buy" with a lower TP of RM5.06 from RM5.50 previously.
"We expect CPO prices to trend lower in Q2 2025 and Q3 2025 and are cautious that the recent US reciprocal tariffs could dampen demand for processed palm oil and delay land monetisation plans," it said.

Sabah accountants urge rethink on stamp duty for employment contracts

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Association of Professional Accountants (SAPA) is urging the federal government to reconsider the blanket enforcement of stamp duty on all employment contracts. The group warns that the policy could burden small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in Sabah. While acknowledging the legal and fiscal rationale behind the Inland Revenue Board's directive, SAPA president Datuk Tan Kok Liang stated that the policy must consider the realities of doing business in less-developed regions like Sabah. "This requirement places additional administrative and financial burdens on employers, especially SMEs operating under constrained resources and geographical challenges," he said on Tuesday (June 3). He added that SAPA calls for a more balanced approach by exempting contracts with monthly salaries below RM4,000, offering exemptions to micro and small enterprises, and phasing in the policy with an implementation date no earlier than January 1 next year, alongside stakeholder engagement and educational outreach. Tan noted that the directive risks discouraging small businesses from formalising employment contracts due to overregulation and red tape. "This could inadvertently leave workers in rural or semi-urban Sabah vulnerable and without formal employment protection," he said. He added that while the Stamp Act 1949 was enacted for legal clarity and contractual certainty, its enforcement must evolve. "In practice, employment contracts have been respected by both employers and employees, with or without a stamp. Strict enforcement based on outdated provisions is counterproductive," he said. Tan then said that SAPA believes reforming the Stamp Act to reflect modern business practices is essential to prevent it from becoming solely a revenue collection tool. "We remain confident that through constructive dialogue, a balanced policy solution can be achieved, one that upholds the law while safeguarding local businesses and promoting employment," said Tan.

Analysts Downgrade Genting Malaysia, After Sharp Drop In Q1 Profits

CIMB Investment Bank Bhd (CIMB Securities) has downgraded Genting Malaysia Bhd (GENM) to HOLD from Buy, with a sharply lower target price of RM1.95 from RM2.45, while Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) has reiterated its HOLD call with a revised target price of RM1.82, as both research houses flagged significant earnings pressure from weaker-than-expected performance across domestic and international operations. GENM's core net profit for the first quarter of FY25 fell 78% year-on-year to RM52 million, which CIMB said was impacted by a broad-based earnings decline across Resorts World Genting (RWG), the US, and UK segments, compounded by higher net interest cost and an elevated effective tax rate. The results were well below expectations, coming in at only 9% and 8% of CIMB Securities' and consensus full-year forecasts, respectively. HLIB similarly noted that GENM's RM31.1 million core profit for the quarter missed its projection by a wide margin, at just 6% of its FY25 estimate. RWG's gross gaming revenue (GGR) was a key concern, declining 7% year-on-year and 9% quarter-on-quarter, driven mainly by a significant drop in VIP play, which fell 18% year-on-year. Although mass market GGR grew by 7%, it was not enough to offset the overall weakness. CIMB Securities highlighted that hilltop visitations dipped 2% year-on-year, likely impacted by the earlier timing of Hari Raya compared to 2024, which affected non-gaming activities. Meanwhile, EBITDA for the group fell 11% year-on-year to RM869 million, with EBITDA margins shrinking to 31.9%. In the US and Bahamas, EBITDA contracted 22% year-on-year, pressured by higher labour costs and a weaker US dollar against the ringgit. In the UK and Egypt, earnings fell 25% year-on-year under similar conditions, though they were flat quarter-on-quarter. Share of associate losses from Empire Resorts also widened sequentially. HLIB noted that while revenue in the US & Bahamas rose 8.6% quarter-on-quarter, group-wide earnings recovery was insufficient to match past performance due to structural headwinds in international markets. CIMB Securities revised its core earnings estimates down by 37–39% for FY25–27, expecting a 29% drop in FY25 earnings before a modest 12% recovery in FY26, aided by anticipated tourist inflows during Visit Malaysia Year. HLIB likewise slashed its forecasts by 36–40%, citing persistently high finance costs, tax burdens and operating volatility in the US. Despite the earnings headwinds, both brokers pointed out GENM's dividend yields remain relatively attractive at 5.5–6.6% over FY25–27. However, CIMB Securities stressed that valuation at an FY25 EV/EBITDA of 8.3x is only modestly attractive, trading at a 12% discount to its 10-year pre-COVID average. Upside risk remains in the form of a possible full casino licence in Downstate New York, which CIMB Securites estimates could add 40–50 sen to its target price. GENM shares closed at RM1.82 on 30 May, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM10.26 billion. Related

Factories give fresh graduates a stepping stone

GEORGE TOWN: You graduate as an engineer and take your first career step, only to find your gross pay is about RM3,000. Seeking a higher quality of life, you switch to another job or even start a small business. To keep the engineering talent pool intact, 11 local factories in Penang, seven of them publicly listed, are using human resources strategies to ensure engineers' salaries are eye-catching enough. A registered industry and education NGO called the 88 Captains and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) are developing HR management and training systems so that fresh engineering graduates can earn at least RM4,000 a month, while diploma-level personnel can get at least RM3,000. Called the Apprenticeship, Internship, Reskilling and Upskilling (Airu) talents programme, it recently started in Penang and begins even when the engineers are still undergraduates. 'Airu is done through assessment of degree students starting from apprenticeships and their requisite internships. 'There's no reason not to give them premium salaries after they graduate because they are deemed to have been 'home-grown' by those companies even before the students earn their bachelor's degrees,' said 88 Captains chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ooi Eng Hock. A check on recent online job advertisements shows that junior electrical engineers start at as low as RM2,500 a month. Offers for fresh mechanical engineering graduates tend to be higher, at about RM3,800 a month, and for most other fields, the starting pay of engineers tends to be a little over RM3,000. Under Airu's apprenticeships and internships, Ooi said local factories guide the undergraduates so that they would be uniquely suited for the companies after completing their studies. The students can then assimilate with the companies' work culture, specific machinery and operating systems, and thus, from the perspective of those factories, they will not be 'fresh graduates'. As for those with technical and vocational education and training (TVET) diplomas, Ooi said Airu would allow them to skip the degree route and sign up for a master programme being developed by USM. 'The master programme is about reskilling and upskilling those who have started working after earning TVET diplomas, and should be finalised by the last quarter. 'It is now being brainstormed in USM with all relevant stakeholders,' Ooi added. He said eligibility to join Airu's master programme will consider factors such as the amount of work experience of diploma holders, and it is not meant to compete with degree programmes of tertiary institutions. He said a starting pay of RM4,000 was also the target of the Higher Education Ministry's Research and Industry-Infused Incubator, led by the Malaysian Electrical and Electronics Consortium comprising 19 public universities headed by USM. 'For TVET diploma holders, the minimum pay of RM3,000 is as per the government's goal,' he said. Key companies that are part of Airu include Vitrox Corporation, UWC, Hotayi Electronics, Swift Bridge Technologies, M Summit Group, MyCO2 Group, ASP Medical Group, Solarvest, Sky Resources Group, YBS International and Chung Chambers, Advocates & Associates. Launched simultaneously with Airu last week was the Intangible Asset Commercialisation & Strategy Association, a grouping meant to empower youths not only in innovation but also in protecting, valuing and commercialising their ideas. Ooi believes that collectively, all these initiatives will help the country retain local talent rather than lose them to other countries. 'We need to start small by encouraging local talent developed in Penang and the northern region to remain here,' he said. Present at Airu's launch were Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and USM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed.
