Crews searching for student swept away by Thompson River
Crews were out in Kamloops Monday to search for a man who possibly drowned in the Thompson River while playing volleyball, according to authorities.
The Kamloops RCMP says it first received a call from the BC Ambulance Service for help around 5:14 p.m. Sunday just east of the Overlander Bridge.
'According to the report a man entered the river to retrieve a volleyball and got caught in the undercurrent,' said spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier, in a statement Monday. 'Two more men from the group who entered the water to assist were also caught in the current. Two of the initial three were saved while the third appeared to be pulled away and went under the water.'
Search and rescue volunteers and RCMP Air Services were involved in Monday's search.
The missing man has been identified as an international student at Thompson Rivers University but police are not releasing his name.
Mounties asked the public to keep an eye on the shoreline and to call 250-828-3000 if they have information.

Suspect sought after woman groped in Burnaby park

'The woman, who suffered no physical injuries as a result, was able to get away and report the incident to police.' Mounties describe the suspect, who ran away after the incident, as a 'possibly Caucasian' man between 20 and 30 years old with medium-length brown or blond curly hair. At the time, he was wearing dark clothes, including a long-sleeved shirt and baseball hat. Police ask anyone with information to call the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.

Fraud suspect in northern Ont. charged with impersonating police
A 21-year-old man from Huntsville is facing more charges in connection with a February fraud in which a northern Ontario resident was scammed out of $74,000. (File) A 21-year-old man from Huntsville is facing more charges in connection with a February fraud in which a northern Ontario resident was scammed out of $74,000. The Temiskaming Shores victim was the target of online and in-person scams, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Wednesday. The suspect was initially arrested March 11, with the help of the Provincial Operational Intelligence Bureau and charged with fraud over $5,000. He was rearrested last month and charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and impersonating police. Const. Martin Thibault told CTV News in an email that the suspect was charged with more offences as a result of the investigation into the original occurrence. 'It is alleged that the accused impersonated a police officer in order to carry out the fraud,' Thibault said. He declined to get into specifics of what fraud the suspect is suspected of committing. However, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has an A-Z list of popular schemes fraudsters use. The accused is scheduled to reappear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury on Oct. 3.

A long-serving member of the Barrie Police Service is retiring, and to say that he has served and protected his community, is an understatement. Serge, who is a German Shepherd, has been the partner of Barrie Police Constable Matt Abofs since 2014. (Barrie Police) A four-legged, tail-wagging,' long-serving member of the Barrie Police Service is retiring after 11 years. Serge, who is a German Shepherd, has been partnered with Barrie Police Const. Matt Abofs since 2014 and was named after the ceremonial uniform of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). 'To say that he has served and protected his community is an understatement,' said Barrie Police on Wednesday. His special name: Serge, reflected on the memory, service, and sacrifice of three RCMP officers who were murdered in New Brunswick on June 4, 2014. Over the last decade, Const. Abofs and his canine friend have attended 775 operational deployments ranging from tracking and searches for controlled drugs to evidence. He has helped out with countless building and vehicle searches that helped return property to victims of crime. 'Police service dogs are trusted and valued members of our service,' said Chief Rich Johnston. 'After 11 years of supporting our officers and helping keep our community safe, Serge will now be able to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.' Const. Abofs continues to serve in the Barrie Police Canine Unit with his other canine partner, General Purpose Dog Radar, who is a Belgian Malinois. Serge plans on enjoying his retirement by continuing to spend it with his long-time friend and offical owner Const. Abofs.
