‘Housefull 5' movie review: Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh steer this entertainment for imbeciles

In a bid to cash in on the goodwill around the frat-boy comedy, writer-producer Sajid Nadiadwala, this time, lines his boisterous drollery with a layer of mystery in the vacation season. Set on a luxury cruise ship, where a billionaire (Ranjeet) dies and a doctor is silenced, it literally spirals into a search for the Jolly on the high seas. By the end, we encounter multiple claimants, but none pass muster. Sajid has once again put together a galaxy of stars of different wattage, but in the absence of a supple string of wisecracks, the flash of wit loses its lustre.
He draws from Todd Phillips's The Hangover, where temporary memory loss generates unintended chaos, but the way it plays out, Housefull 5 remains a hollow play of words. The gags outlive their welcome, and the political incorrectness and situational humour that are the hallmarks of the franchise no longer organically fit into the narrative.
Director Tarun Mansukhani falters in carrying forward the unapologetic tone set by Sajid Khan. Hailing from the Dharma school, Tarun cocks a snook at animal lovers, generates racist jokes, and lets the camera loose on the cleavage but his heavy-handed approach results in diminishing returns. It is like descending into the gutter with the confidence that the clothes will remain unspoiled. The strand of suspense thriller is more potent, but the comic element does not serve it effectively.
Housefull 5 (Hindi)
Director: Tarun Mansukhani
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Fardeen Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Chitrangada Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Ranjeet, Johnny Lever
Run-time: 165 minutes
Storyline: After a billionaire dies on his luxury cruise, three different claimants turn up to be the heir, making the air thick with suspense and comic chaos.
It has been 15 years since the original hit the turnstiles. The rust on characters is palpable and demands reimagination. Chunky Panday's Pasta has gone stale, and so is the tribute to Ranjeet's salacious gestures. Though no longer frat boys, it is left to Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh to squeeze out some crumbs of comic relief from the corny dialogues penned by Farhad Samji. Masters of slapstick, Akshay and Riteish can survive the flaws and troughs in storytelling. Not Abhishek Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt, but when Fardeen Khan is around, not many can outwit him in 'stiff' competition. Shreyas Talpade and Johnny Lever demonstrate how to make the most of clichés, but they don't get enough screen time to showcase their talent.
Tarun wastes a lot of screen time playing on the Khalnayak chemistry between Jackie Shroff and Dutt, but it doesn't work. And Nana Patekar's late entry fails to redeem the trite proceedings.
As always, the film is high on the glamour quotient, creating some thinly veiled sexual humour. However, the jokes don't land. It is hard to expect anything fresh from Nargis Fakhri and Jacqueline Fernandez. Soundarya Sharma joins their league here. One gets a feeling they are cast in multi-starrers because their dates don't clash with male stars. Chitrangada Singh and Sonam Bajwa are better actors, but this is a stage meant for giggling, shrieking, and shaking a leg in revealing outfits.

Housefull 5 Movie Review: Housefull 5 mistakes noise for humour

The death of an ageing billionaire (Ranjeet) on his luxury cruise brings chaos to the lives of those aboard the ship. His will names his son 'Jolly', as an heir to his property. Chaos turns into frenzy when three Jollys (Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh) show up to claim the wealth. If the plot wasn't crowded enough, there's a masked killer on the loose and everyone's a suspect. Who's the killer and who's the real Jolly?: Housefull franchise's existence is rooted in slapstick comedy, so you walk in knowing what to expect. Akshay Kumar slapping CGI monkeys, girls blatantly objectified and Riteish Deshmukh gobbling a parrot as annoying as the one in 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon', don't surprise you. You snigger at lines like 'Thokte raho……. Taaliya', 'mera popat kabhi nahi uthega', but overlook the cringe because that's what the brand is all about. What surprises you is the utter lack of humour, even dirty humour if we may say so in the script and sheer wastage of a zillion actors who are known for their comic by Tarun Mansukhani, a far cry from his brand of humour in Dostana, Housefull 5 deserved a script, let alone better writing. In a span of 2 hours, 45 minutes (a bit too long for a whodunnit-comedy), the banal first half is loaded with random songs, pointless arguments, juvenile jibes and loud noise… everything but humour. You desperately miss comic punches. Even Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff's inclusion as baba and bhidu don't add up. You feel sorry for these actors reducing themselves to caricatures of their former film somewhat takes off in the second half but truly sheds its stagnancy only in the climax, a bit too late. This also marks the arrival of Nana Patekar. The senior actor, a master of the genre (control Uday… control of Welcome) shows how it's done. As a dhoti clad interpol chief based in London, rooted in Maharashtra, Patekar is terrific and infuses life into this overloaded, derailed cruise. Sajid Nadiadwala tries to blend comedy with murder mystery through his script and fails at both barring the climax. It's the last 20 minutes along with Nana's entry that truly entertain you. This is what you expected Housefull 5 to be… thrilling, unpredictable and funny. Sajid even manages to conceal the identity of the killer till the end, but the humour aspect falls miserably Riteish who manages to entertain, both Abhishek Bachchan and Akshay Kumar get little to play with as far as words are concerned. The women have nothing much to do except for upping the glam quotient and being the butt of several adult jokes. Sonam Bajwa, Fardeen Khan and Dino Morea act sensibly. Shreyas Talpade, Johnny Lever and Chunky Panday are criminally wasted. Talpade just disappears for a major part of the film, but we can't expect logic here. Can we?Note: The film has two climaxes 5A and 5B, both versions have different killers, while rest stays the same. Won't make much of a difference which version you choose but if you must, go for more: 'Housefull 5' box office collection day 1: Akshay Kumar starrer collects Rs 23 crore on its first day; beats Housefull 4 opening day haul
